Hungarian forms a negative command or negative desired event with ne plus an imperative–subjunctive verb: Ne menj el! “Don't leave!” and Azt kérem, hogy ne menj el “I ask you not to leave.” The verb retains the same mood morphology used in a positive imperative; ne supplies negative force and controls important word-order patterns.
This page builds those forms. Their communicative uses appear on the usage page, while difficult alternatives belong on the contrast page. Unless labeled otherwise, examples are neutral modern standard Hungarian.
The core negative paradigm
Place ne before the imperative–subjunctive form. The verb still marks all six subject persons and retains indefinite-versus-definite object agreement.
| Subject | Indefinite with vár | Definite with vár |
|---|---|---|
| én | ne várjak | ne várjam |
| te | ne várj / ne várjál | ne várd / ne várjad |
| ő / Ön | ne várjon | ne várja |
| mi | ne várjunk | ne várjuk |
| ti | ne várjatok | ne várjátok |
| ők / Önök | ne várjanak | ne várják |
Ne várj rám, mert későn végzek!
Don't wait for me, because I'll finish late!
Ne várd meg az utolsó pillanatot!
Don't wait until the last moment!
Ne menjünk még haza!
Let's not go home yet!
Rám is a sublative personal form and does not trigger definite agreement, so the command is ne várj. Definite az utolsó pillanatot selects ne várd. First-person plural ne menjünk corresponds to “let's not …”.
ne is not nem
Use nem to negate an assertion in the indicative. Use ne when an action is prohibited, discouraged, requested not to happen, or presented as a negative purpose.
Péter nem kapcsolja ki a számítógépet.
Péter isn't turning off the computer.
Péter, ne kapcsold ki a számítógépet!
Péter, don't turn off the computer!
Tudom, hogy Anna nem késik el.
I know that Anna won't be late.
Azt szeretném, hogy Anna ne késsen el.
I'd like Anna not to be late.
The verb mood changes with the clause's status. Nem kapcsolja, nem késik el report negative content; ne kapcsold, ne késsen el target an event that should not be realized. English not does not express this distinction by itself.
Prefix separation after ne
In ordinary prohibitions and negative desired-event clauses, ne stands before the finite verb and a verbal prefix follows it, written separately.
| Infinitive | Positive direct command | Negative command |
|---|---|---|
| elmenni | Menj el! | Ne menj el! |
| kinyitni | Nyisd ki! | Ne nyisd ki! |
| felhívni | Hívd fel! | Ne hívd fel! |
| megírni | Írd meg! | Ne írd meg! |
Ne nyisd ki az ablakot, mert nagy a zaj odakint!
Don't open the window, because it's very noisy outside!
Kérlek, ne felejtsd el bezárni az ajtót!
Please don't forget to lock the door!
Azt kérte, hogy ne hívjuk fel munkaidő után.
He/she asked us not to call after working hours.
The prefix still belongs lexically to the verb: kinyit, elfelejt, felhív. Separation reflects negative clause structure, not a new dictionary entry.
Prefix + ne + verb in negative purpose clauses
In purpose and prevention clauses, Hungarian often places the prefix before ne, leaving the finite verb after it:
Leírtam a címet, hogy el ne felejtsd.
I wrote down the address so that you wouldn't forget it.
Korábban indultunk, hogy le ne késsük a vonatot.
We left earlier so that we wouldn't miss the train.
The sequences are el + ne + felejtsd and le + ne + késsük. This is an established contemporary prevention pattern and often sounds careful or emphatic. It differs from the neutral direct prohibition Ne felejtsd el! “Don't forget it!”
The exact placement reflects clause type and focus; the prefix-order forms page develops the broader system.
ne ... se and negative concord
Hungarian allows several negative expressions in one clause. Se can mean “either/even,” accompany a negative pronoun, or coordinate excluded alternatives. The imperative–subjunctive remains negative.
Ne mondd el senkinek se, amit hallottál!
Don't tell anyone what you heard!
Te se kapcsold ki még a gépet!
Don't you switch off the machine yet either!
Ne tegyél bele se sót, se borsot!
Don't put either salt or pepper in it!
In senkinek se, negative reference and se reinforce the prohibition; Hungarian negative concord is not a double positive. Te se menj uses se in the preverbal negative position and needs no additional ne. Se sót, se borsot coordinates two excluded objects under ne.
The full distribution of se/sem is register- and position-sensitive. Senkinek sem is common in (formal) writing, while senkinek se is frequent in speech; both can occur with a negative verb. See negative concord forms.
Object definiteness inside prohibitions
The same object classes that select present and past agreement select negative imperative agreement.
Ne vegyél drága ajándékot!
Don't buy an expensive gift!
Ne vedd meg azt a drága órát!
Don't buy that expensive watch!
Ne mondjatok semmit a gyerekeknek!
Don't tell the children anything!
Ne mondjátok el a gyerekeknek a meglepetést!
Don't tell the children about the surprise!
Bare drága ajándékot and semmit are indefinite; demonstrative azt a drága órát and definite a meglepetést are definite. Dative a gyerekeknek never controls the verb. English commands show none of these distinctions on the verb.
Stem assimilation remains active
Adding ne does not simplify the imperative stem. Sibilants and t-final verbs retain their assimilated or stem-specific forms.
Ne olvass vezetés közben üzeneteket!
Don't read messages while driving!
Ne nézzétek meg nélkülem a következő részt!
Don't watch the next episode without me!
Ne segíts neki, amíg nem kéri!
Don't help him/her until he/she asks!
Ne tanítsd meg a gyereknek ezt a rossz szokást!
Don't teach the child this bad habit!
Olvass and nézzétek reflect sibilant assimilation; segíts and tanítsd reflect t-final imperative stems. Object agreement is calculated independently: indefinite üzeneteket, definite a következő részt and ezt a rossz szokást.
Short, long, formal, and irregular forms
Second-person short and long variants remain possible after ne: ne várj/ne várjál, ne várd/ne várjad. Short forms are neutral defaults; long forms are common in (informal) emotionally engaged speech.
Ne aggódjál már, meg fogjuk oldani!
Don't worry; we'll solve it!
Formal singular address uses third-person forms:
Kérjük, ne használja a liftet!
Please do not use the lift!
This is (formal) public-notice language. Frequent irregular prohibitions include ne légy/ne legyél, ne gyere/ne jöjj, ne menj, ne tedd, ne vedd, ne vidd, ne hidd, ne edd, and ne idd.
Ne légy ilyen szigorú magaddal!
Don't be so hard on yourself!
Ne idd meg az összes vizet, hagyj másnak is!
Don't drink all the water; leave some for others too!
There is no reliable rule that derives every irregular stem. Learn these high-frequency forms as complete patterns.
Embedded desired events
The negative imperative–subjunctive appears after expressions of desire, request, necessity, permission, and prevention.
Fontos, hogy ne hagyjuk nyitva az ajtót.
It is important that we not leave the door open.
Az orvos azt kérte, hogy néhány napig ne sportoljak.
The doctor asked me not to exercise for a few days.
The main verb can be past, but ne hagyjuk, ne sportoljak remain nonpast imperative–subjunctive forms. Hungarian locates the requested event relative to the matrix clause rather than creating a past negative imperative.
Segmentation exercise
- ne vár-j: negative particle + 2sg indefinite imperative–subjunctive.
- ne vár-d: negative particle + 2sg definite short form.
- ne olvas-s-atok: negative particle + assimilated stem + 2pl indefinite ending.
- ne néz-z-étek: negative particle + assimilated stem + 2pl definite ending.
- ne tanít-s-d: negative particle + t-final imperative stem + 2sg definite ending.
- ne hív-j-uk fel: negative particle + 1pl definite imperative–subjunctive + separated prefix.
- el ne felejt-s-d: prefix + negative particle + t-final definite form in a purpose clause.
The surface form packages mood, subject, and object reference. Ne/se, clause type, and focus determine negative and prefix placement.
Common Mistakes
❌ Nem menj el!
Incorrect for a prohibition — nem negates an assertion, not a command.
✅ Ne menj el!
Don't leave!
❌ Ne kinyisd az ajtót!
Incorrect neutral prefix placement after ne.
✅ Ne nyisd ki az ajtót!
Don't open the door!
❌ Ne vegyétek egy drága ajándékot!
Incorrect — egy drága ajándékot requires the indefinite form.
✅ Ne vegyetek egy drága ajándékot!
Don't buy an expensive gift!
❌ Azt kérem, hogy nem beszélj ilyen hangosan.
Incorrect for a requested negative event — use ne.
✅ Azt kérem, hogy ne beszélj ilyen hangosan.
I ask you not to speak so loudly.
Key Takeaways
- Use ne plus imperative–subjunctive morphology for prohibitions and negative desired, required, or purposive events.
- Use nem for negative assertions; the difference is clause force, not simply word order.
- Ordinary prohibitions place the prefix after the verb: ne menj el, ne írd meg.
- Negative purpose clauses often use prefix + ne + verb: hogy el ne felejtsd.
- Ne ... se, negative pronouns, and coordinated se ... se express Hungarian negative concord, not cancellation of negation.
- Subject person, object definiteness, stem assimilation, mood, negation, and prefix placement remain separate but interacting choices.
