Hungarian event structure is built by the whole predicate, not read mechanically from one verb or prefix. A verb's lexical meaning, its object, a directional or result prefix, repetition, and sentence focus can all affect whether an event has a natural endpoint. Event type and telicity are different questions
Lexical aspect classifies the situation expressed by a predicate. A state such as tud “know” or szeret “love” has no internal change. An activity such as fut “run” is dynamic but supplies no endpoint. An accomplishment combines a process with a culmination, while an achievement presents the change itself as virtually instantaneous.

Telicity asks a narrower question: does this particular predicate describe progress toward an inherent endpoint? States and activities are normally atelic; accomplishments and achievements are telic. Tense is independent: a present-tense telic predicate is still telic, and a past activity does not become telic merely because it ended in real life.
The object helps build the event
A quantized object denotes a bounded amount: one apple, the letter, three chapters. A mass or bare object can leave the event open-ended. This is semantic quantity, not the same as grammatical definiteness. Hungarian definite conjugation tracks identifiable object reference; telicity tracks an endpoint.
Péter almát evett a konyhában.
Péter was eating an apple in the kitchen.
Péter megevett egy almát a konyhában.
Péter ate an apple in the kitchen.
The second sentence is telic even though egy almát is grammatically indefinite: eating that one apple supplies a natural endpoint. Conversely, a definite object need not make the event telic.
Anna ette a levest, amikor felhívtam.
Anna was eating the soup when I called.
Anna megette a levest, mielőtt elindult.
Anna ate up the soup before she left.
Both sentences take definite verb forms, ette and megette, because a levest is definite. Only the second presents completion. The four systems encoded around a Hungarian verb—subject person, object reference, tense or mood, and prefix position—interact, but none is a substitute for another. A prefix can add a boundary—but not always
Productive prefixes often contribute a path, result, or completion: ír “write” versus megír “write and complete,” olvas “read” versus elolvas “read through,” javít “repair/work on” versus megjavít “repair successfully.” This makes many prefixed predicates telic.
Zsófi délután a pályázatot írta, de nem fejezte be.
Zsófi worked on the application in the afternoon, but did not finish it.
Zsófi délután megírta a pályázatot.
Zsófi completed the application in the afternoon.
Calling every prefix “perfective,” however, predicts too much. In meghall “hear,” megáll “stop,” megszeret “come to like,” and elhisz “believe,” the prefixed verb is a lexical unit. The prefix cannot be freely removed while preserving the same basic event plus an aspect switch. Conversely, an unprefixed predicate can be bounded when the lexical meaning and arguments provide a culmination.
Júlia nyert egy ösztöndíjat.
Júlia won a scholarship.
Nyert has no prefix, yet winning is an achievement. The practical lesson is to learn prefixed verbs as lexical combinations while also observing productive result patterns. The prefix contrast page examines separability and word order.
Iteration changes the diagnostic
Achievements can occur repeatedly across a stretch of time. A duration phrase then measures the series, not one punctual event. This is why egy órán át does not automatically prove that a verb is an activity.
A busz délelőtt tízpercenként megállt a bejárat előtt.
The bus stopped in front of the entrance every ten minutes during the morning.
A telefonom egész este újra meg újra megcsörrent.
My phone rang again and again all evening.
Each stop or ring has a boundary; adverbs such as tízpercenként and újra meg újra create an iterative series. English uses tense and progressive marking heavily here. Hungarian usually leaves tense in the ordinary past and lets adverbials and predicate structure carry the interpretation.
Focus moves prefixes without erasing the event boundary
In a neutral affirmative clause, a prefix normally stands before its verb. Focus, negation, and several modal constructions can move it after the verb. That change reflects information structure or clause type, not a new lexical aspect.
Márta írta meg a végleges választ, nem Gábor.
It was Márta who wrote the final answer, not Gábor.
Márta nem írta meg a végleges választ.
Márta did not write the final answer.
In the focused sentence, írta meg still denotes completion. In the negative sentence, the projected completion is denied. Do not infer “imperfective” merely from postverbal meg. Likewise, present tense does not force English-style ongoing time: Holnap megírom naturally refers to a future completion, while Minden este bezárja az ajtót describes a repeated habit.
In (academic) linguistic prose, labels such as telikus and atelikus are common. Everyday speakers express the same contrasts without those terms. The (literary) historical present may narrate a bounded past event with present morphology; this is a stylistic tense choice, not a different event type.
Quick decision tree
- Does the predicate describe a stable condition? If yes, start with state.
- If it is dynamic, does its meaning plus arguments supply a natural endpoint? If no, it is normally an activity.
- If there is an endpoint, is there an extended process leading to it? If yes, accomplishment; if the change itself is foregrounded, achievement.
- Is the object a bounded quantity? That supports telicity, but check the prefix and lexical meaning too.
- Is the prefix after the verb because of focus or negation? Do not reclassify the event on word order alone.
- Does a duration phrase measure one event or repeated events? Look for iterative context.
Diagnostic exercise
Classify the bold predicate and explain the form.
- Kata két órán át olvasta a regényt. This is an activity reading: the definite object selects olvasta, but no completion is asserted.
- Kata két óra alatt elolvasta a regényt. This is an accomplishment: the reading process reaches the endpoint encoded by the entire novel and el-.
- A lámpa hirtelen kialudt. This is an achievement: the predicate foregrounds the transition to being unlit.
- Éva *nem olvasta el a regényt. The projected event is telic but negated; postverbal *el follows negation.
Common Mistakes
❌ Tegnap dolgozott két óra alatt.
Incorrect for ‘worked for two hours’: the completion-time phrase falsely suggests an endpoint.
✅ Tegnap két órán át dolgozott.
Yesterday she worked for two hours.
❌ Péter megevett az almát.
Incorrect: a definite object requires the definite verb form.
✅ Péter megette az almát.
Péter ate the apple.
❌ Nem megírta a levelet.
Incorrect neutral negation: the prefix must follow the negated verb.
✅ Nem írta meg a levelet.
She did not write the letter.
❌ A meg prefix mindig befejezett múltat jelent.
Incorrect: meg- does not by itself mean a completed past.
✅ Holnap megírom a választ.
