Hív means “call,” but the Hungarian frames distinguish calling by phone, summoning, inviting, and calling someone by a name. The person called is an accusative object; a name assigned to that person takes -nak/-nek, and an invitation’s goal normally takes a directional case. Prefixes such as fel-, meg-, be-, ki-, and vissza- make these meanings more specific.
Principal parts and vowel length
The long í is essential. It remains long before consonant-initial endings: hívtam, hívnék, hívj, hívni. Third-person past inserts -ott: hívott.
| Function | Form | Note |
|---|---|---|
| dictionary / present 3sg | hív | long í |
| past 3sg | hívott | but hívtam, hívtál |
| conditional 3sg | hívna | back-vowel ending |
| imperative–subjunctive 2sg | hívj | stem + -j |
| infinitive | hívni | stem + -ni |
| present participle | hívó | “calling; caller” |
Indefinite conjugation
| Person | Present | Past | Conditional | Imperative–subjunctive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| én | hívok | hívtam | hívnék | hívjak |
| te | hívsz | hívtál | hívnál | hívj / hívjál |
| ő | hív | hívott | hívna | hívjon |
| mi | hívunk | hívtunk | hívnánk | hívjunk |
| ti | hívtok | hívtatok | hívnátok | hívjatok |
| ők | hívnak | hívtak | hívnának | hívjanak |
Hívok egy taxit, mert az utolsó busz már elment.
I’ll call a taxi because the last bus has already left.
Indefinite egy taxit selects hívok. The forms hívnak/hívtak can also occur when an unexpressed third-person plural subject calls “me” or “you,” because first- and second-person objects do not select the definite paradigm.
Definite conjugation
| Person | Present | Past | Conditional | Imperative–subjunctive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| én | hívom | hívtam | hívnám | hívjam |
| te | hívod | hívtad | hívnád | hívd / hívjad |
| ő | hívja | hívta | hívná | hívja |
| mi | hívjuk | hívtuk | hívnánk | hívjuk |
| ti | hívjátok | hívtátok | hívnátok | hívjátok |
| ők | hívják | hívták | hívnák | hívják |
Délután felhívom a fogorvost, és kérek új időpontot.
I’ll call the dentist this afternoon and request a new appointment.
Miért hívtátok a gondnokot ilyen későn?
Why did you call the caretaker so late?
Definite a fogorvost/a gondnokot selects hívom/hívtátok. First-person past hívtam can belong to either paradigm: compare hívtam egy szerelőt with hívtam a szerelőt.
The special first-person-subject/second-person-object form is hívlak “I call/am calling you.”
Hívlak, amint megérkezem a szállodába.
I’ll call you as soon as I arrive at the hotel.
Calling by telephone
Bare hív can mean make a telephone call when context is clear. Felhív presents a bounded call and is the most explicit everyday choice. The called person remains an accusative object.
Most nem tudok beszélni; hívj vissza este hat után.
I can’t talk now; call me back after six this evening.
A rendelőből hívtak, hogy elkészült a leletem.
The clinic called to say that my test result was ready.
The second sentence leaves both the institutional caller and first-person object implicit. Hungarian often uses third-person plural this way when the individual callers are irrelevant.
Már kétszer hívtam az ügyfélszolgálatot, de mindig foglalt volt.
I’ve called customer service twice already, but the line was busy every time.
English uses call identically for an attempted and a completed contact. Hungarian felhív often packages a call as one bounded event, while bare hív is comfortable for the activity or repeated attempts. The difference is contextual, not a rule that bans either verb.
Inviting and summoning
Meghív valakit valamire/valahova means invite someone to an occasion or place. The invitee is accusative; an event commonly takes -ra/-re, an interior goal -ba/-be, and a person’s home -hoz/-hez/-höz or magához.
A szomszédainkat is meghívtuk a kerti ünnepségre.
We invited our neighbors to the garden celebration too.
Júlia vacsorára hívott bennünket az új lakásába.
Júlia invited us to dinner at her new apartment.
Hív without meg- is natural when the goal or social action makes the invitation clear. Behív means call/summon inside; kihív can call someone out to a site or challenge someone; elhív asks someone to come along.
Az orvos behívta a következő beteget a vizsgálóba.
The doctor called the next patient into the examination room.
A közös képviselő kihívta a szerelőt a beázott lakáshoz.
The building manager called the repair technician out to the water-damaged apartment.
Do not use the destination as a second accusative object. Hungarian case marking keeps the invitee and goal distinct.
Institutional and abstract calls
Several prefixed and idiomatic expressions extend hív beyond telephoning or invitation. Összehív valakiket means convene a group, segítségül hív valakit/valamit means call someone or something to one’s aid, and életre hív valamit means establish or bring something into being (formal). The accusative participant still controls the verb paradigm.
Az igazgató hétfő reggelre összehívta a tantestületet.
The principal convened the teaching staff for Monday morning.
A mentéshez egy hegyimentő kutyát is segítségül hívtak.
A mountain-rescue dog was also called in to help with the rescue.
A helyi vállalkozók közösen hívták életre az ösztöndíjprogramot.
Local business owners jointly established the scholarship program.
An assigned role can take essive -ul/-ül, as in tanúul hív “call as a witness” (formal). This differs from naming with dative -nak/-nek.
A szerződés aláírásához két szomszédot hívtak tanúul.
Two neighbors were called as witnesses for the signing of the contract.
Hívják: a command or a naming statement
The form hívják can be present indicative definite (“they call it”) or third-person plural imperative–subjunctive (“let them call it; please call it”). Punctuation, context, and a polite setting identify the intended mood.
Sürgős esetben hívják a huszonnégy órás ügyeletet!
In an emergency, please call the twenty-four-hour on-call service!
A környéken Aranypartnak hívják ezt a partszakaszt.
In the area, they call this stretch of shore Golden Beach.
The second sentence uses an unspecified human plural much like English impersonal they. Hungarian does not need a passive construction merely because the individual namers are irrelevant.
Naming: valakit valaminek hív
In the naming construction, the person or thing named is accusative, while the assigned name or category takes dative -nak/-nek.
A családban mindenki Matyinak hívja Mátyást.
Everyone in the family calls Mátyás Matyi.
Ezt a keskeny átjárót a helyiek Macskaköznek hívják.
Locals call this narrow passage Cat Alley.
Hungarian commonly asks a person’s name with an impersonal-looking plural:
Hogy hívnak?
What’s your name?
Literally, this is “How do they call you?” The second-person object is understood, so hívnak is appropriate. With a definite third-person object, use hívják:
Hogy hívják az új könyvtárost?
What is the new librarian’s name?
The naming predicate is not an articleless English complement copied unchanged. Matyinak and Macskaköznek visibly mark the role “as/by the name.”
Prefix order and focus
Neutral positive felhívta/meghívta keeps the prefix before the verb. Negation, a question word, or a focused phrase normally puts it after the finite verb.
A koordinátor nem hívta vissza a jelentkezőket.
The coordinator did not call the applicants back.
Kit hívtál meg a pénteki megnyitóra?
Whom did you invite to Friday’s opening?
Kit is an interrogative object and selects indefinite hívtál. Compare a melyik phrase, which is definite:
Melyik szakértőt hívtad fel a javítás miatt?
Which expert did you call about the repair?
Here hívtad is definite, but focus still separates fel. Object conjugation and prefix position respond to different grammatical signals. See the definiteness-choice guide and prefix-order guide.
Infinitive and participles
Personal infinitive forms are hívnom, hívnod, hívnia, hívnunk, hívnotok, hívniuk.
Még ma vissza kell hívnom a biztosító ügyintézőjét.
I still have to call the insurance representative back today.
| Form | Typical use | Register |
|---|---|---|
| hívni | taxit hívni “call a taxi” | unmarked |
| hívó | ismeretlen hívó “unknown caller” | unmarked |
| hívott | a meghívott vendégek “the invited guests” | usually prefixed in this meaning |
| hívva | segítségül hívva valakit “calling on someone for help” | mainly (formal) |
| hívandó | a később összehívandó ülés “the meeting to be convened later” | (formal), mainly with prefixes |
