Főz means “cook” in a general meal-preparation sense and, more specifically, cook or boil with liquid. The food prepared is accusative (levest főz), ingredients may take -ból/-ből (zöldségből főz levest), and the beneficiary is dative (vacsorát főz a családnak). For baking or roasting, Hungarian often uses süt instead.
Two sound facts affect the entire reference. The vowel ő is always long and distinct from ö. The final z assimilates before several j-initial endings: főz + jük → főzzük, and the imperative stem is főzz-. The general spelling process appears in the assimilation guide.
Principal parts and nonfinite forms
| Function | Form | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Dictionary / present 3sg | főz | neutral |
| Past 3sg | főzött | neutral |
| Infinitive | főzni | neutral |
| Present participle | főző | cooking; person/device that cooks |
| Past participle | főzött | cooked/boiled |
| Future participle | főzendő | (formal/rare) |
| Adverbial participle | főzve | neutral: cooked/by cooking |

The sauce cooked over low heat was even tastier the next day.
A zöldbabot párolva szeretem, nem hosszú ideig főzve.
I like green beans steamed, not boiled for a long time.
The personal infinitive respects vowel harmony: főznöm, főznöd, főznie, főznünk, főznötök, főzniük. For example, Ma nekem kell főznöm means “I have to cook today.”
Present indicative
| Person | Indefinite | Definite |
|---|---|---|
| én | főzök | főzöm |

| ő / Ön | főz | főzi |
| mi | főzünk | főzzük |
| ti | főztök | főzitek |
| ők / Önök | főznek | főzik |
Not every definite ending begins with j, so assimilation appears only in forms such as főzzük, not in főzi, főzitek, főzik. The object contrast remains regular: főzök egy levest, but főzöm a levest.
Ma sütőtökkrémlevest főzök a vendégeknek.
Today I’m making pumpkin soup for the guests.
Már főzzük a tésztát, úgyhogy tíz perc múlva ehetünk.

Foods, ingredients, and beneficiaries
The prepared dish is a direct object: ebédet, levest, a mártást. The raw material can take elative -ból/-ből, especially when it is transformed into a dish. A beneficiary takes dative. Instrumental -val/-vel can name an accompanying ingredient or cooking method.
A nagymamám szilvából főz lekvárt minden augusztusban.
My grandmother makes plum jam every August.
A szakács friss fűszernövényekkel főzi a paradicsomszószt.
The chef cooks the tomato sauce with fresh herbs.
Hungarian főz is broader than “boil” but narrower than English cook. Süt is normal for baking, roasting, and many kinds of frying; párol means steam or braise. Learn the verb with the technique rather than translating cook automatically.
The distinction between activity and completed result also changes what sounds natural in a time expression. Két órán át főztem presents two hours spent cooking, without promising a completed dish. Két óra alatt megfőztem az ebédet says that the meal was completed within two hours. English can use cook in both sentences, but Hungarian combines the prefix, the object, and the time phrase to show whether the event has a boundary. With habitual cooking, vasárnaponként főzök is normally unprefixed unless each completed meal is foregrounded.
Két órán át főztem a vendégek érkezése előtt.
I cooked for two hours before the guests arrived.
Másfél óra alatt megfőztük az ünnepi ebédet.
We cooked the festive lunch in an hour and a half.
Megfőz versus megfő, and other prefixes
Transitive megfőz valamit means cook something until ready. Intransitive megfő means the food becomes cooked: Megfőtt a krumpli “The potatoes are done.” English can use cook on both sides, but Hungarian distinguishes the causative -z verb from intransitive fő.
Megfőztem a burgonyát, de még nem törtem össze.
I cooked the potatoes, but I haven’t mashed them yet.
A lencse még nem főtt meg teljesen.
The lentils are not fully cooked yet.
Other lexicalized prefixes include kifőz “boil out; devise” and lefőz “brew,” especially coffee. Neutral megfőzte joins the prefix; negation and focus separate it: nem főzte meg, A SZAKÁCS főzte meg.
A kávégép még nem főzte le a második adagot.
The coffee machine has not brewed the second batch yet.
A GOMBÁT főzték meg külön, nem a zöldségeket.
They cooked THE MUSHROOMS separately, not the vegetables.

- Sibilant assimilation gives főzzük and imperative főzz-, but not főzzi.
- Foods are accusative, source ingredients often take -ból/-ből, and beneficiaries are dative.
- Transitive megfőzöm a rizst contrasts with intransitive megfő a rizs.
- Negation and focus separate a verbal prefix while object agreement remains intact.
