ért: Complete Conjugation and Usage

Ért means “understand” and, in the frame ért valamihez, “know about/be skilled in something.” It is transitive with understood content but takes allative -hoz/-hez/-höz for a field of expertise. Its spelling must also be separated from the verb ér “reach/be worth” and the case suffix -ért “for.”

This page supplies both object paradigms, the assimilated imperative, infinitive and participles, and the major prefixed meanings. Unlabeled forms are neutral standard Hungarian. Compare ismer for familiarity with a person, place, or item rather than comprehension.

Principal parts

InfinitivePresent 3sgPast 3sgImperative 2sgConditional 3sgPresent participle
érteniértértettérts; értsdérteneértő

The past inserts -ett in third-person singular and uses értett- elsewhere. In the imperative, stem-final t + j produces ts: érts, értsen, értsük. Long é remains in every form.

Elsőre nem értettem a használati útmutató utolsó bekezdését.

I didn't understand the last paragraph of the instructions on the first reading.

A rajzból már értek valamit, de a képletek még nem világosak.

I understand something from the diagram now, but the formulas are still unclear.

Értjük a problémát, és délutánra megoldást is javaslunk.

We understand the problem and will propose a solution by this afternoon.

Indefinite valamit selects értek; definite a problémát selects értjük. A content clause likewise behaves as definite content.

Nem értem, miért küldték vissza a kérelmet.

I don't understand why they sent the application back.

The children understood the explanation too, even though it contained many new words.

The analytic future carries object agreement on fog: érteni fogok valamennyit, but meg fogom érteni a lényeget.

Imperative–subjunctive

énértsekértsem
teérts / értsélértsd / értsed
ő / önértsenértse
miértsünkértsük
tiértsetekértsétek
ők / önökértsenekértsék

Long értsél/értsed is conversational and can sound insistent; short érts/értsd is neutral. The paradigm frequently appears in subordinate purpose clauses rather than literal commands to control comprehension.

Értsd meg, nem ellened hoztuk ezt a szabályt!

Please understand that we didn't introduce this rule to target you! (informal)

Mondana egy példát, hogy jobban értsem a különbséget?

Could you give an example so that I understand the difference better? (polite)

A táblázat legyen önmagában is világos, hogy az olvasók gyorsan értsék a tendenciát.

The table should be clear on its own so readers can quickly understand the trend. (formal)

💡
The definite command is értsd, not ért: érts valamit but értsd meg ezt. Imperative j is no longer visible because it assimilates to the stem-final consonant.

Infinitive and major participles

The infinitive is érteni; personal forms are értenem, értened, értenie, értenünk, értenetek, érteniük.

A részletes szakvéleményt a megrendelőnek is értenie kell.

The client also needs to understand the detailed expert opinion.

A megjegyzés tréfának értendő, nem személyes bírálatnak.

The remark is to be understood as a joke, not as personal criticism. (formal)

Minden költséget beleszámoltunk, az utazást is beleértve.

We included every expense, including travel.

Understanding content versus having expertise

Ért valamit takes an accusative content object. Ért valamihez describes expertise or practical competence. Despite English be good with, Hungarian uses allative -hoz/-hez/-höz, not instrumental -val/-vel.

A bátyám jól ért a régi kerékpárok javításához.

My older brother knows a lot about repairing old bicycles.

Én nem értek a hálózati beállításokhoz, kérdezzük meg a rendszergazdát!

I don't understand network settings; let's ask the system administrator!

The expertise phrase is not a direct object, so it selects indefinite értek even when the noun phrase itself has a definite article.

💡
Case and agreement diagnose the meaning: értem a programot means “I understand the program,” while értek a programhoz means “I know how to work with/about the program.”

Three different ért forms

  1. ért is present third-person singular of ért “understand”: Már ért mindent.
  2. ért is past third-person singular of the separate verb ér “reach/be worth”: A vonat délben ért Bécsbe.
  3. -ért is a case suffix meaning “for, in exchange for, because of”: Annáért, segítségért, ötezer forintért.

A mentő tíz perc alatt ért a helyszínre.

The ambulance reached the scene in ten minutes.

Már a vásárláskor sem ért ötezer forintot a hibás készülék.

Even at the time of purchase, the faulty device wasn't worth five thousand forints.

A futár a javított alkatrészért jött vissza.

The courier came back for the repaired part.

The first two contain past ért from ér; the third contains suffixed noun alkatrészért. Their neighboring words and paradigm, not sound alone, identify them.

Prefixes and information structure

Megért reaches understanding, félreért misunderstands, and egyetért valakivel valamiben agrees with someone on something. The last is written as one verb but still selects instrumental partner and an optional inessive issue.

Végre megértettem, mi okozta a rendszeres hibát.

I finally understood what was causing the recurring error.

Nem értettem félre a kérdést; egyszerűen nem tudtam rá válaszolni.

I didn't misunderstand the question; I simply couldn't answer it.

Melyik pontban nem értetek egyet a tervezővel?

On which point do you disagree with the designer?

Negation and focused interrogative phrases separate félre and egyet. This is ordinary information structure, not spelling variation.

  • Learn ért – értett – érts – érteni and preserve long é.
  • Ért “understands,” past ért from ér “reached/was worth,” and suffix -ért are different structures.
  • Megért, félreért, and egyetért have distinct valency and prefix behavior.
  • Negation and focus can separate a prefix while the required complements remain unchanged.
