emlékszik: Complete Conjugation and Usage

Emlékszik means “remember,” but it does not take the remembered person or thing as an accusative object. Hungarian remembers valakire/valamire, with the sublative ending -ra/-re: emlékszem a címre. This intransitive, middle-voice valency is reflected in its -ik form and in the absence of a definite conjugation.

Its morphology uses two related stems. Present forms favor emléksz-, while the past, conditional, imperative, infinitive, and participles use emlékez-. The fuller present emlékezik series also exists and is slightly elevated (formal/literary); the mixed pattern is ordinary contemporary Hungarian. The broader syntax of non-agentive subjects is introduced under experiencer constructions.

Principal parts

InfinitivePresent 3sgPast 3sgImperative 2sgConditional 3sgPresent participle
emlékezniemlékszik / emlékezikemlékezettemlékezzemlékezneemlékező

The -kezik shape belongs to a family of middle or reflexive-looking verbs, but modern learners should not try to extract a separate pronoun from it. Synchronically, emlékszik/emlékezik is one intransitive lexeme with a fixed case frame.

Pontosan emlékszem arra a délutánra, amikor először találkoztunk.

I remember exactly the afternoon when we first met.

Present: two accepted stem patterns

PersonCommon emléksz- formFull emlékez- variant
énemlékszememlékezem
teemlékszelemlékezel
ő / önemlékszikemlékezik
miemlékszünkemlékezünk
tiemlékszetekemlékeztek
ők / önökemlékszenekemlékeznek

Both columns are grammatical. In everyday speech, emlékszem, emlékszel, emlékszik, emlékszünk are especially frequent, while plural emlékeztek/emlékeznek also sounds entirely natural. Do not build unattested nonpresent forms from emléksz-: the past is emlékeztem, not emléksztem.

Emlékeztek még a régi mozi nevére?

Do you still remember the name of the old cinema? (informal plural)

A legtöbb tanú csak a hangos csattanásra emlékszik.

Most witnesses remember only the loud bang.

💡
Store the everyday first-person form and the nonpresent stem together: emlékszem, but emlékeztem, emlékeznék, emlékezzek, emlékezni. The alternation is real; forcing one visible stem through every form produces errors.

Past and conditional

PersonPastConditional
énemlékeztememlékeznék

ő / önemlékezettemlékezne
miemlékeztünkemlékeznénk
tiemlékeztetekemlékeznétek
ők / önökemlékeztekemlékeznének

The forms are only indefinite because the remembered content is a sublative complement rather than an object. Notice that present emlékeztek “you remember” and past emlékeztek “they remembered” can look identical; the subject and context distinguish them.

A beszélgetés elején még pontosan emlékeztem a találkozó dátumára.

At the beginning of the conversation, I still remembered the date of the meeting exactly.

Nélküled biztosan nem emlékeznék minden részletre.

Without you, I certainly wouldn't remember every detail.

A résztvevők másként emlékeztek arra, hogyan kezdődött a vita.

The participants remembered differently how the argument began.

The analytic future is emlékezni fogok, but the present often suffices for retaining information: Holnap is emlékszem majd rá. Majd supplies the future perspective without altering valency.

The sequence z + j is written zz: emlékezz, emlékezzen. Long second-person emlékezzél is (informal) and more insistent. Commands generally ask someone to retain or call something to mind.

Emlékezz rá, hogy a hátsó ajtó este automatikusan bezáródik!

Remember that the rear door locks automatically in the evening! (informal)

Írd fel a kódot, hogy később is emlékezz rá!

Write the code down so that you remember it later! (informal)

Fontos, hogy a következő nemzedékek is emlékezzenek ezekre az eseményekre.

It is important that future generations also remember these events. (formal)

Infinitive and participles

The infinitive is emlékezni; personal forms are emlékeznem, emlékezned, emlékeznie, emlékeznünk, emlékeznetek, emlékezniük.

Nem kell minden dátumra emlékezned, de az események sorrendjét értened kell.

You do not have to remember every date, but you do need to understand the sequence of events.

In neutral contemporary prose, a relative clause is usually more natural than bare emlékezett or emlékezendő: a tanú, aki másképp emlékezett. Emlékező remains productive, especially in commemorative contexts.

A megemlékezésen a túlélőkre emlékező beszédek hangzottak el.

Speeches remembering the survivors were delivered at the commemoration. (formal)

What is remembered: -ra/-re and rá

The remembered entity takes -ra/-re, whether it is a person, object, event, or exact wording. With no noun, use pronominal : emlékszem rá. A demonstrative before an overt noun is also inflected: arra a találkozóra.

A jelszóra nem emlékszem, de arra igen, hogy nyolc karakterből állt.

I don't remember the password, but I do remember that it consisted of eight characters.

English also permits remember to do something, meaning “not forget a future task.” Hungarian normally uses nem felejti el rather than emlékszik + infinitive.

Ne felejtsd el elküldeni a számlát még ma!

Remember to send the invoice today! (literally: Don't forget to send it.)

💡
Emlékszik valamire recalls content already in memory. For English “remember to do,” choose ne felejtsd el + infinitive; an infinitive is not a normal complement of emlékszik.

Megemlékezik: deliberate commemoration

Megemlékezik does not simply perfectivize ordinary remembering. It means “commemorate, pay tribute to, mention in remembrance” and governs -ról/-ről, the delative: megemlékezik valakiről/valamiről. It is common in ceremonies, obituaries, and formal writing (formal).

Az iskola egy ünnepségen emlékezett meg egykori igazgatójáról.

At a ceremony, the school commemorated its former principal. (formal)

A beszédben külön is megemlékeztek az önkéntesek munkájáról.

The speech paid special tribute to the volunteers' work. (formal)

Neutral affirmative megemlékeztek keeps the prefix attached. Negation and narrow focus separate it: Nem emlékeztek meg az évfordulóról; Csak röviden emlékeztek meg róla. The complement remains delative even after separation.

Emlékeztet is a different transitive verb

Emlékeztet valakit valamire means “remind somebody of/about something.” The person reminded is accusative, so emlékeztet has object agreement; the memory prompt remains sublative.

Kérlek, emlékeztess holnap a fogorvosi időpontomra!

Please remind me tomorrow about my dentist appointment! (informal)

Compare emlékszem a határidőre “I remember the deadline” with emlékeztetsz a határidőre “you remind me of the deadline.” The extra -tet changes both causation and valency.

Common Mistakes

❌ Emlékszem a pontos címet.

Incorrect accusative complement: emlékszik requires -ra/-re.

✅ Emlékszem a pontos címre.

I remember the exact address.

❌ Tegnap még emléksztem a kapukódra.

Incorrect past stem: nonpresent forms use emlékez-.

✅ Tegnap még emlékeztem a kapukódra.

Yesterday I still remembered the entry code.

❌ Emlékezz felhívni a szerelőt!

Incorrect calque of remember to call: emlékszik does not control this infinitive.

✅ Ne felejtsd el felhívni a szerelőt!

Remember to call the repair technician!

❌ Az ünnepségen megemlékeztek a költőre.

Incorrect case with megemlékezik: commemoration takes -ról/-ről.

✅ Az ünnepségen megemlékeztek a költőről.

They commemorated the poet at the ceremony.

Key Takeaways

  • Present emléksz- alternates with emlékez-; all nonpresent forms use emlékez-.
  • Remembered content takes sublative -ra/-re or pronominal , never a direct object.
  • English “remember to do” is normally nem felejt el + infinitive.
  • Megemlékezik valakiről/valamiről is a formal commemorative construction with the delative.
  • Emlékeztet valakit valamire is a separate transitive causative meaning “remind.”
