Hungarian formal relational expressions do more than translate English “based on,” “for,” “within,” or “regarding.” They tell the reader whether a phrase supplies evidence, a purpose, an institutional frame, a dimension of comparison, or a topic domain. The forms page explains their internal architecture; here the organizing question is what discourse job each expression performs. All are modern standard Hungarian, but their naturalness depends strongly on setting and lexical context.
Evidence and authority: alapján
Alapján presents its complement as the basis from which somebody infers, classifies, decides, or acts. The basis can be visible evidence, a document, a rule, data, or another person's description. It does not merely locate the source of words; it licenses the conclusion or action that follows.
A fényképek alapján könnyen felismered majd a házat.
You will easily recognize the house from the photographs.
A jelenlegi adatok alapján nem indokolt újabb korlátozás.
On the basis of the current data, no further restriction is justified.
A házirend alapján este tíz után nem lehet hangoskodni.
Under the house rules, making noise after ten in the evening is not allowed.
The first example is neutral conversation; the second is (formal) analytical prose; the third invokes a normative authority. With a person, valaki elmondása alapján “on the basis of someone's account” is often clearer than bare valaki alapján, which may sound as though the person themself is a model for comparison.
Intended benefit or purpose: érdekében
Érdekében frames an action as serving a goal or beneficiary. With an event noun, it is a compact formal purpose construction: a balesetek megelőzése érdekében “in order to prevent accidents.” With a human possessor, it may express benefit: a gyerek érdekében “in the child's interest.” These uses share the idea that the action is oriented toward a desirable outcome.
A gyorsabb ügyintézés érdekében vezették be az online időpontfoglalást.
Online appointment booking was introduced to speed up administration.
Most mindannyiunk érdekében kompromisszumot kell kötnünk.
We now need to reach a compromise in everyone's interest.
Csendben maradt, mert nem akarta tovább élezni a vitát.
She remained silent because she did not want to intensify the argument.
The third example shows a natural plain alternative. In spontaneous conversation, a causal or purpose clause with azért, hogy, mert, or hogy is often lighter than an abstract noun plus érdekében. Formal compression is useful when the document must package a purpose into one noun phrase; it is not automatically more precise.
Lexically, érdekében favors goals, protections, improvements, prevention, compliance, and identifiable beneficiaries. It is odd when no intended benefit exists. An accidental cause should be expressed with miatt or a causal clause, not érdekében.
Institutional inclusion: keretében
Keretében places an activity inside an organized program, project, course, agreement, investigation, or event. It signals institutional membership rather than simple physical location or merely simultaneous time.
A kutatás keretében több mint ezer kérdőívet értékeltek ki.
More than a thousand questionnaires were analyzed as part of the research.
A fesztivál keretében vasárnap ingyenes családi programokat tartanak.
Free family activities will be held on Sunday as part of the festival.
A tanfolyamon két prezentációt is tartottunk.
We also gave two presentations during the course.
The last sentence is the natural plain choice when participation in a course is enough. A tanfolyam keretében is possible, but emphasizes that the presentations were components of the organized course. Keretében is particularly common in institutional and grant-funded settings, sometimes because writers want to make an activity sound programmatically authorized.
A concrete noun can reactivate the literal noun keret “frame.” A projekt keretében is relational, but a kép keretében will normally be understood as “in the picture's frame.” This is a genuine noun–postposition boundary rather than an irregularity.
Dimension of evaluation: tekintetében
Tekintetében restricts a statement to one respect, dimension, or category. It is useful when a broader judgment must be qualified: two options may differ ár tekintetében “in terms of price” but not minőség tekintetében “in terms of quality.” The expression is (formal) and often appears in reports, legal analysis, and comparison.
Ár tekintetében ez az ajánlat kedvezőbb, de a garancia rövidebb.
In terms of price, this offer is better, but the warranty is shorter.
A két régió a munkanélküliség tekintetében jelentősen eltér egymástól.
The two regions differ significantly in terms of unemployment.
It favors scalar or classifying nouns: price, quality, age, competence, liability, rights, and performance. For an ordinary conversational topic, Hungarian usually prefers a case-marked noun or kapcsolatban: A pénzről később beszélünk “We'll talk about the money later,” not automatically a pénz tekintetében.
Topic and applicability: vonatkozóan
Vonatkozóan establishes the domain to which information, a rule, a question, or an obligation applies. Its complement must be sublative: -ra/-re vonatkozóan. This construction is strongly (formal) and especially at home in notices, regulations, official questions, and specialist prose.
Az adatkezelésre vonatkozóan új tájékoztatót tettek közzé.
A new notice concerning data processing has been published.
A külföldi munkavállalókra vonatkozóan eltérő szabályok érvényesek.
Different rules apply to foreign employees.
Erről még nem kaptam semmilyen tájékoztatást.
I haven't received any information about this yet.
The plain third example is preferable in most conversation. Erre vonatkozóan még nem kaptam tájékoztatást is correct, but sounds like a meeting, official reply, or written complaint. The sublative signals the relation selected by vonatkozóan; English word order cannot be copied as vonatkozóan a szabályok.
Human referents and personal forms
English uses the same prepositional frame in “for the project” and “for me,” but Hungarian may expose the underlying possessive grammar when the beneficiary is a person. Az ő érdekében “in his/her interest” has a third-person possessor; az én érdekemben and a mi érdekünkben require first-person possessive endings. With vonatkozóan, by contrast, the personal referent appears as a sublative pronoun: rám, rád, rá, ránk, rátok, rájuk vonatkozóan. There is no productive form such as vonatkozóanam.
A döntést valóban a mi érdekünkben hozták meg.
The decision was really made in our interest.
Rád vonatkozóan nem hangzott el semmilyen bírálat.
No criticism concerning you was voiced.
With alapján, a person normally needs a mediating noun if their words are the evidential basis: Éva elmondása alapján “on the basis of Éva's account.” Bare Éva alapján can instead suggest that Éva is a model or comparison point. Context therefore affects both the morphology and the natural lexical expansion.
Concrete and abstract complements
Formal heads select meanings, not simply concrete or abstract nouns. Fényképek alapján uses concrete objects as evidence; az igazságosság érdekében uses an abstraction as a goal. Keretében generally needs something conceptualized as an organized whole. Tekintetében needs a dimension, and vonatkozóan a domain of applicability.
A cipőtalp lenyomata alapján azonosították a betörőt.
The burglar was identified from the shoeprint.
Az esélyegyenlőség érdekében névtelenül bírálják el a pályázatokat.
To ensure equal opportunity, the applications are assessed anonymously.
A megállapodás keretében a múzeum három festményt kölcsönöz.
Under the agreement, the museum is lending three paintings.
A workplace dialogue
The dialogue shows how speakers can edit bureaucratic wording without changing the message.
– A költségek tekintetében további egyeztetés szükséges. – A csapatnak ezt így írjuk, vagy egyszerűbben?
– Further consultation is required regarding the costs. – Shall we write it to the team like this, or more simply?
– Írjuk inkább azt, hogy a költségekről még beszélnünk kell. – Rendben, az természetesebben hangzik.
– Let's write instead that we still need to discuss the costs. – All right, that sounds more natural.
The first version is appropriate (formal) report language. The second fits an internal email or conversation. Neither is more truthful; they organize the same topic at different levels of nominal and bureaucratic density.
Formal versus informal comparison
| Formal packaging | Plainer wording | Change in emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| a hibák megelőzése érdekében | azért, hogy ne legyenek hibák | nominal goal → explicit clause |
| a projekt keretében | a projektben / a projekt során | institutional inclusion → setting/time |
| a részletekre vonatkozóan | a részletekről | applicability domain → ordinary topic |
| a teljesítmény tekintetében | teljesítményben | analytical dimension → compact comparison |

Key Takeaways
- Alapján supplies evidence or authority for a conclusion, classification, decision, or action.
- Érdekében identifies an intended goal or beneficiary, not an accidental cause.
- Keretében marks membership in an organized institutional whole.
- Tekintetében restricts an evaluation to a dimension; vonatkozóan marks a formal domain of applicability.
- Plainer alternatives often improve conversation and internal communication without sacrificing meaning.
- These heads remain linked to nominal and case morphology, so their postposed order and selected complement forms matter.
