The five formal heads covered here do not form a set of interchangeable equivalents for English “in terms of” or “regarding.” Alapján establishes a basis, érdekében a purpose or beneficiary, keretében an institutional whole, tekintetében a dimension, and vonatkozóan a domain of applicability. At C2 level, the challenge is not recognizing these dictionary meanings but choosing the one that accurately stages the relationship without making the prose needlessly bureaucratic. Review their architecture on the forms page and their central functions on the usage page.
alapján versus szerint: basis or attributed content
Both expressions may translate “according to,” but they assign different roles to the source. Szerint attributes a claim, opinion, or wording to somebody or something. Alapján treats its complement as material from which a conclusion, classification, decision, or action follows.
A jelentés szerint tavaly csökkent a forgalom.
According to the report, traffic decreased last year.
A jelentés alapján új intézkedéseket vezettek be.
New measures were introduced on the basis of the report.
The first tells us what the report says; the second tells us what decision-makers used. The distinction can coexist in one sentence.
A szakértő szerint az épület biztonságos, ezért a véleménye alapján újranyitották.
According to the expert, the building is safe, so it was reopened on the basis of her opinion.
For visible clues, alapján is particularly natural: a hangja alapján “from his voice,” a nyomok alapján “from the clues.” With a human model, however, valaki alapján may mean “modeled on someone,” not “according to someone's words.” Use Péter szerint for Peter's opinion or Péter elmondása alapján for an inference from his account.
érdekében versus miatt and azért, hogy
Érdekében is purposive: an agent acts to bring about a valued result or serve a beneficiary. Miatt is causal and does not imply intention. Azért, hogy expresses purpose as a clause and is usually lighter in speech.
A betegek biztonsága érdekében korlátozták a látogatást.
Visiting was restricted in the interest of patient safety.
A járvány miatt korlátozták a látogatást.
Visiting was restricted because of the epidemic.
Korábban indultunk, hogy biztosan elérjük a vonatot.
We left earlier so that we would definitely catch the train.
A vonat elérése érdekében korábban indultunk.
We left earlier in order to catch the train.
The last two share propositional content. The nominal version is (formal) and foregrounds a policy-like objective; the clause is neutral. Negative or accidental consequences normally reject érdekében. Sarcastic use is possible, but then the clash is deliberate rather than a free synonymy.
There is also a noun–postposition boundary. In a projekt érdekében “in the interest of the project,” érdekében is relational and conventionally follows an unmarked complement. In a közös érdekünkben “in our shared interest,” the possessive ending -ünk actively identifies the possessor. The expression has not lost its nominal grammar completely.
keretében versus során and -ban/-ben
Keretében says that an activity is an organized component of a project, program, agreement, course, or investigation. Során orders an event within a time span, while -ban/-ben simply locates it in a setting or activity. The same real-world event can be framed differently.
A konferencia keretében külön műhelyt szerveztek a tanároknak.
A separate workshop was organized for teachers as part of the conference.
A konferencia során három régi kollégámmal is találkoztam.
During the conference, I met three former colleagues.
A projektben én felelek az adatgyűjtésért.
In the project, I am responsible for data collection.
The workshop is a programmed component, the meetings merely occurred during the event, and the last sentence describes a role in a project. Administrative writers often overuse keretében where -ban/-ben or során would state the intended relation more directly.
Concrete keret remains an ordinary noun. A kép keretében normally means “in the picture's frame,” whereas a képzési program keretében means “as part of the training program.” Lexical semantics and context determine where the expression lies on the grammaticalization gradient.
tekintetében versus vonatkozóan and topic cases
Tekintetében selects a respect along which an assessment, comparison, difference, right, or obligation is delimited. Vonatkozóan selects the entity or domain to which information, a question, or a rule pertains. Their complement forms differ: tekintetében follows an unmarked phrase; vonatkozóan requires sublative -ra/-re.
A két készülék ár tekintetében alig különbözik.
The two devices differ very little in terms of price.
A készülék garanciájára vonatkozóan több kérdés is érkezett.
Several questions were received regarding the device's warranty.
A garanciáról az ügyfélszolgálat ad tájékoztatást.
Customer service provides information about the warranty.
Ár tekintetében makes price an evaluative axis. A garanciára vonatkozóan makes the warranty the scope of the questions. A garanciáról is an ordinary topic phrase and is often the most natural choice in conversation. English “regarding” can introduce either of the first two relations, so translation alone cannot decide.
Kapcsolatban provides a moderately formal topic relation: a garanciával kapcsolatban “in connection with the warranty.” It selects instrumental. Illetően is another formal topic head, but it selects an accusative complement, as in a részleteket illetően. It is less common in conversation. Formal prose therefore offers several legitimate options whose difference is partly semantic and partly stylistic.
A részletekkel kapcsolatban holnap kereslek.
I'll contact you tomorrow about the details.
A részleteket illetően még nincs végleges döntés.
As regards the details, there is no final decision yet.
Information structure and sentence rhythm
The whole relational phrase may function as a topic-setting frame at the beginning of a sentence. Fronting can make the criterion or domain explicit before the main assertion. In contrastive focus, the phrase typically stands immediately before the finite verb. Its internal order remains complement before head.
A költségek tekintetében nincs vita, az ütemezést viszont át kell gondolnunk.
There is no dispute as far as the costs are concerned, but we need to reconsider the schedule.
Nem a pletykák alapján döntöttünk, hanem az ellenőrzött adatok alapján.
We did not decide on the basis of rumors, but on the basis of verified data.
Repeated formal heads can create clarity in a legal contrast, but elsewhere they make prose heavy. Hungarian official writing often compresses actions into abstract nouns, and these postposition-like forms make further embedding possible. Editing sometimes requires restoring verbs, not merely swapping one postposition for another.
A hatékonyság növelése érdekében a folyamat felülvizsgálatára vonatkozóan javaslat készült.
A proposal concerning the review of the process was prepared in order to increase efficiency.
Javaslat készült arra, hogyan vizsgáljuk felül a folyamatot és tegyük hatékonyabbá.
A proposal was prepared on how to review the process and make it more efficient.
The first is grammatical (bureaucratic/formal) Hungarian. The second restores human-readable actions. Advanced control includes recognizing when compact nominal structure serves the genre and when it obscures agency.
Decision tree
- Does the complement provide evidence, a rule, or material for a decision? Choose alapján.
- Are you attributing a statement or opinion to a source? Prefer szerint.
- Does an intended goal or beneficiary motivate the action? Choose érdekében; use miatt for a cause without purpose.
- Is the event a designed component of an organized whole? Choose keretében; use során for mere temporal occurrence.
- Is the complement a dimension of evaluation or comparison? Choose tekintetében.
- Is it a formal domain to which information or rules apply? Choose -ra/-re vonatkozóan.
- Is it simply the topic of speaking or thinking? Prefer -ról/-ről or, when appropriate, -val/-vel kapcsolatban.
- Would a direct clause sound clearer for the audience? Use it. Formal density is a rhetorical choice, not a requirement.
Diagnostic
Choose the best form and explain the relation.
- A tanúk vallomása _ azonosították a sofőrt. → alapján: testimony is evidence used for identification.
- A zaj _ nem tudtam aludni. → miatt, not érdekében: the noise is an unintended cause.
- A képzés _ kötelező elsősegély-tanfolyamot tartanak. → keretében: the course is an organized component of the training.
- A két terv a költségek _ jelentősen eltér. → tekintetében: costs are the dimension of comparison.
- A pályázati feltételekre _ írásban válaszolunk. → vonatkozóan: the conditions define the formal scope, and the complement takes sublative -ra.

✅ A meteorológus szerint délután havazni fog.
According to the meteorologist, it will snow this afternoon.
❌ A műszaki hiba érdekében lekéstük az átszállást.
Incorrect — the technical fault was a cause, not an intended goal.

In terms of costs, this offer is better.
❌ Vonatkozóan a szerződés még egyeztetnünk kell.
Incorrect — Hungarian places the sublative complement before vonatkozóan.
✅ A szerződésre vonatkozóan még egyeztetnünk kell.
We still need to consult regarding the contract.
❌ Az én érdekében változtatták meg a beosztást.
Incorrect for 'in my interest' — the underlying possessed noun cannot keep its third-person form after én.
✅ Az én érdekemben változtatták meg a beosztást.
They changed the schedule in my interest.
Key Takeaways
- Alapján supplies a basis; szerint attributes content.
- Érdekében expresses intended purpose or benefit; miatt expresses cause.
- Keretében marks institutional inclusion; során marks temporal occurrence.
- Tekintetében introduces a dimension; vonatkozóan introduces formal scope and selects -ra/-re.
- Information structure moves the entire phrase, never the head alone before its complement.
- The forms lie on a noun–postposition gradient, and their bureaucratic density must suit the genre.
