Abstract Postpositions: Meanings and Usage

Abstract postpositions tell listeners how one idea relates to another: as cause, source, substitute, opponent, goal, or comparison standard. Their English translations overlap heavily, so fluent choice depends on the relation the speaker intends, not on replacing an English preposition word for word. Review the personal paradigms on the abstract postposition forms page; here the forms are grouped by communicative purpose.

Explaining why something happened

Use miatt when an event, condition, or person is presented as the cause of a result. It is common with delays, changes, emotions, and decisions. Although many textbook examples describe problems, miatt is not grammatically negative.

A havazás miatt bezárták az iskolát.

They closed the school because of the snowfall.

A váratlan siker miatt mindenki ünnepelni kezdett.

Because of the unexpected success, everyone began celebrating.

The personal form can sound accusatory when the consequence is bad: Miattad késtünk el “We were late because of you.” In a positive context it can express warm motivation: Miattad jöttem el “I came because of you.” Intonation and the predicate decide whether the speaker is blaming, crediting, or simply identifying a cause.

Nem miattad mondtam le az utat; közbejött egy sürgős munka.

I didn't cancel the trip because of you; an urgent job came up.

English often uses “for” in both causal and purposive phrases. Hungarian normally keeps these apart. Miatt looks backward to an explanatory cause; purpose looks forward to an intended outcome and is commonly expressed with -ért, azért, hogy, or a purpose clause.

💡
Test the logic, not the English preposition: if X explains an existing result, use X miatt. If X is the goal someone hopes to achieve, use a purpose construction.

Stating a purpose in formal language

Végett traditionally presents a purpose and survives especially in official, legal, and administrative formulas (formal/old-fashioned). It is grammatical, but it often sounds heavier than modern conversation.

A felek további egyeztetés végett elnapolták az ülést.

The parties adjourned the meeting for further consultation.

In ordinary speech, a clause is usually clearer: Azért napolták el az ülést, hogy tovább egyeztessenek. Causal végett is also attested, especially in older and regional usage, but learners who need broadly neutral modern Hungarian should use miatt for cause. This is a genuine area of historical and regional overlap, not a distinction every speaker maintains identically.

Azért hívlak, hogy megbeszéljük a holnapi programot.

I'm calling so that we can discuss tomorrow's plans.

Attributing information and judgments

Szerint marks the source or standard behind a proposition. The source can be a person, a document, an instrument, a theory, or a rule.

Az orvos szerint nincs szükség további vizsgálatra.

According to the doctor, no further examination is necessary.

A használati útmutató szerint először fel kell tölteni az akkumulátort.

According to the instructions, the battery must first be charged.

A hőmérő szerint odakint mínusz nyolc fok van.

According to the thermometer, it is minus eight degrees outside.

With a person, szerintem/szerinted/szerinte commonly introduces an opinion. Hungarian speakers often omit a separate “I think” because szerintem already frames the statement as the speaker's view. In a debate, moving szerintem near the beginning establishes perspective without necessarily making it the narrow focus.

A terv szerint haladunk can mean “we are proceeding according to plan”: here szerint marks conformity, not somebody's report. Context distinguishes “according to what the plan says” from “in the planned manner,” and both are natural extensions of a guiding standard.

Eddig minden a terv szerint halad.

So far everything is going according to plan.

Replacing a person, thing, or action

Helyett says that one participant or choice occupies a role associated with another. The substitute appears elsewhere in the clause; the displaced item precedes helyett.

Dóra helyett ma Bence vezeti a megbeszélést.

Today Bence is chairing the meeting instead of Dóra.

Lift helyett inkább menjünk fel a lépcsőn.

Let's take the stairs instead of the lift.

The personal forms are especially useful when the displaced person is already known: Majd én válaszolok helyetted “I'll answer for you/instead of you.” Depending on context, this can be helpful or intrusive. Helyetted döntöttem means “I decided in your place,” not merely “I made a decision for your benefit.”

For a replaced action or whole proposition, use ahelyett, hogy + finite clause. The conditional mood is common when the unrealized alternative concerns the subject's possible action.

Ahelyett, hogy találgatnánk, kérdezzük meg közvetlenül.

Instead of guessing, let's ask directly.

💡
With helyett, identify the missing role: Péter helyett Anna jött means Anna filled Péter's slot. For an unrealized action, switch to ahelyett, hogy plus a clause.

Resisting, preventing, and voting

Ellen covers directed opposition: voting against a proposal, protesting against a policy, protecting against a danger, or taking medicine against a symptom. The activity or object must conventionally support an adversarial or preventive relation.

A bizottság három tagja a javaslat ellen szavazott.

Three members of the committee voted against the proposal.

Ez a kenőcs hatékony a rovarcsípés okozta viszketés ellen.

This ointment is effective against itching caused by insect bites.

The adjective-like elleni lets the relation modify a noun: rovarcsípés elleni kenőcs “ointment against insect bites.” Ellen itself remains the postposition in adverbial phrases: védekezik a rovarcsípések ellen.

A túrázók hosszú nadrággal védekeztek a kullancsok ellen.

The hikers protected themselves against ticks by wearing long trousers.

Personal ellenem/ellened/ellene may describe literal action or a perceived alignment: Mindenki ellenem van “Everyone is against me.” It does not mean physical contact against a surface; Hungarian normally uses a case construction such as a falnak támasztja “leans it against the wall.”

Attitude versus direction

Use iránt with interest, respect, trust, responsibility, demand, or another attitude directed toward a target. These nouns and verbs form strong lexical partnerships: érdeklődés valami iránt, tisztelet valaki iránt, kereslet valami iránt.

Egyre nagyobb a kereslet a javítható készülékek iránt.

Demand for repairable devices is growing.

Nagy tiszteletet érzek azok iránt, akik önkéntesként dolgoznak.

I have great respect for those who work as volunteers.

Felé instead marks a spatial path or a metaphorical orientation and trend: a kijárat felé indul, a kompromisszum felé mozdul. It is productive with movement and gradual development, but not the conventional complement of érdeklődés.

A tárgyalások lassan a kompromisszum felé mozdultak el.

The negotiations slowly moved toward a compromise.

In clock expressions, öt óra felé means “toward/about five o'clock,” an extended temporal orientation. This is neutral in conversation but less exact than öt órakor “at five.”

Comparing reality with a baseline

Képest requires an allative-marked comparison standard: a tervhez képest, hozzám képest, ahhoz képest. It can compare measurable properties or evaluate an outcome against an expectation.

A lakás az alapterületéhez képest meglepően világos.

The apartment is surprisingly bright for its floor area.

Ahhoz képest, hogy egész éjjel esett, jó állapotban van a pálya.

Considering that it rained all night, the pitch is in good condition.

In the first sentence, the baseline is a noun phrase. In the second, ahhoz képest, hogy packages an entire proposition as the expectation against which the result is assessed. English “for,” “considering,” and “compared with” can all translate the pattern; Hungarian keeps the allative baseline visible.

A short dialogue

Szerinted miért mondta le Júlia a találkozót? — Szerintem a beteg gyereke miatt.

Why do you think Júlia canceled the meeting? — I think it was because of her sick child.

Akkor menjünk el mi helyette a bemutatóra? — Igen, de előbb írjunk neki.

Then shall we go to the presentation in her place? — Yes, but let's write to her first.

The first exchange uses personal szerinted/szerintem to negotiate viewpoints, then miatt to supply the cause. The second uses helyette because the group would occupy Júlia's planned role. English repeats “do you think/I think,” whereas Hungarian handles perspective compactly on the postposition.

Formal and informal alternatives

Az ügyfél adategyeztetés végett köteles megjelenni az ügyfélszolgálaton.

The client is required to appear at the customer service office for data verification.

Be kell jönnie, hogy egyeztessük az adatait.

You need to come in so we can verify your details.

The first is administrative (formal): nominal adategyeztetés végett and köteles create institutional distance. The second is ordinary explanatory speech (neutral/informal). A form can be grammatical yet unsuitable for a friendly message; register is part of choosing the construction.

Common Mistakes

❌ Szerint az orvos pihennem kell.

Incorrect — the source must precede szerint.

✅ Az orvos szerint pihennem kell.

According to the doctor, I need to rest.

❌ Én helyett Ági tartja meg az órát.

Incorrect — use the personal form helyettem.

✅ Helyettem Ági tartja meg az órát.

Ági is teaching the class instead of me.

❌ A csapat érdeklődést mutatott az ajánlat felé.

Incorrect collocation — interest selects iránt.

✅ A csapat érdeklődést mutatott az ajánlat iránt.

The team showed interest in the offer.

❌ Én képest gyorsabban futsz.

Incorrect — a personal comparison baseline needs the allative form.

✅ Hozzám képest gyorsabban futsz.

Compared with me, you run faster.
