Postposition Syntax and Personal Paradigms: Meanings and Usage

Postpositions locate one entity relative to another, but their work goes far beyond physical space. Hungarian uses the same noun-before-postposition pattern for time (ebéd után “after lunch”), cause (az eső miatt “because of the rain”), viewpoint (Anna szerint “according to Anna”), substitution (Péter helyett “instead of Péter”), and absence (cukor nélkül “without sugar”).

The central usage question is what relation you want to express. The English translation may use under, during, according to, because of, or an entirely different structure, while Hungarian keeps the reference point before the postposition.

Locating people and things

Core spatial postpositions describe a landmark and a figure located relative to it.

A biciklim a ház mögött van.

My bicycle is behind the house.

Ülj le nyugodtan mellém.

Feel free to sit down next to me.

In the first sentence, a ház is an overt landmark and mögött follows it. In the second, the goal postposition mellé carries first-person -m, producing mellém “to beside me.” Personal reference is built into the postposition rather than supplied by a bare pronoun.

A játszótér két iskola között van.

The playground is between two schools.

With a quantified landmark denoting more than one entity, között follows the whole noun phrase. With two coordinated landmarks—a bank és a pékség között—it likewise follows the complete coordination.

💡
Identify the landmark first. Say the complete Hungarian noun phrase, then place the relational word after it: the bank and the bakerya bank és a pékség, then között.

Time frames reuse postpositions

Several common spatial forms have temporal extensions. Előtt means “before,” után means “after,” and alatt can delimit a period during which something happens.

A megbeszélés előtt még felhívlak.

I'll call you before the meeting.

Munka után beülünk valahova vacsorázni.

After work, we'll go somewhere for dinner.

A szünet alatt végig esett az eső.

It rained throughout the break.

English in or during may translate alatt, but that does not make alatt interchangeable with every time case. Két óra alatt often presents the time within which an event is completed, whereas két órán át presents continuous duration. The time-postposition usage page develops that contrast.

Personal forms can be temporal too:

Én értem ide előbb; Dóra öt perccel utánam érkezett.

I got here first; Dóra arrived five minutes after me.

Utánam means after me in sequence. Its ending identifies the reference person, just as mellettem does in space.

Cause: miatt

Miatt introduces a cause or reason. It is neutral and common, though the surrounding context often makes the cause sound undesirable.

A sűrű köd miatt több járat is késett.

Several services were delayed because of the dense fog.

Ne aggódj miattam, rendben leszek.

Don't worry about me; I'll be fine.

In miattam, the cause or concern is the speaker. English uses two different prepositions in these translations, but Hungarian lexical choice follows the construction: késik valami miatt, aggódik valaki miatt.

Miatt is not restricted to blame. A munkája miatt költözött ide can neutrally mean “He/she moved here because of work.” For positive enabling causes, -nak/-nek köszönhetően “thanks to” often makes the evaluation clearer.

Viewpoint and source: szerint

Szerint identifies the person, document, rule, or body of evidence that supports a statement.

Szerinted jó helyen várunk?

Do you think we're waiting in the right place?

A menetrend szerint tíz perc múlva indul a vonat.

According to the timetable, the train leaves in ten minutes.

Personal szerintem/szerinted/szerinte is extremely common for opinions. A noun phrase such as a menetrend szerint sounds evidential: the timetable is the source. Do not translate szerintem word for word as according to me in idiomatic English; “in my opinion” or “I think” is normally better.

Szerintem kérdezzük meg a recepcióst.

I think we should ask the receptionist.

Substitution and absence

Helyett means that one participant or option takes another's place. Nélkül removes an expected participant, ingredient, or circumstance.

Ma én vezetek Bence helyett.

Today I'm driving instead of Bence.

Tej nélkül kérem a kávét.

I'd like my coffee without milk.

Ezt nélkületek nem tudtuk volna megoldani.

We couldn't have solved this without you all.

With an overt noun, the postposition is separate: Bence helyett, tej nélkül. With a personal reference, it carries the ending: helyettem, nélkületek. The relation is the same even though the morphology changes.

Postpositions and discourse order

The whole postpositional phrase can be a topic, neutral adjunct, or focus. Internal noun-before-postposition order remains intact.

A könyvtár előtt találkozunk, nem az állomáson.

We're meeting in front of the library, not at the station.

Here a könyvtár előtt is contrastive and stands before the verb. A neutral answer to Hol találkozunk? can also be A könyvtár előtt. Hungarian moves the complete phrase; it does not strand előtt as English can strand a preposition in some questions.

In neutral speech, a noun phrase and its postposition form a close stress group, and the postposition is normally unstressed: a HÁZ mögött. When the relation itself is corrected or contrasted, it can receive prominence: a ház ELŐTT, nem MÖGÖTT “in front of the house, not behind it.” The words remain separate in either reading.

Personal pronouns are normally omitted because the ending is sufficient. Adding a matching doubled form makes a contrast:

Énelőttem mondta, nem csak másoktól hallottam.

He said it in front of me; I didn't merely hear it from other people.

Énelőttem is emphatic. Neutral előttem mondta is more common when no contrast is needed.

Recoverable landmarks and omission

An overt noun landmark can be omitted when the postpositional phrase has already been established, but Hungarian still needs a form that carries the relation. A personal landmark uses its personal paradigm; an inanimate referent may be recovered from context through a demonstrative expression or by repeating the postpositional phrase.

A bolt előtt vagy mögötte vársz? — Előtte.

Are you waiting in front of the shop or behind it? — In front of it.

Here mögötte and előtte use third-person singular endings to refer back to a bolt. Hungarian does not leave a bare mögött or előtt where English can use a standalone phrase such as “in front.”

A táskám mellett volt a telefon, de most nincs mellette.

The phone was next to my bag, but now it isn't next to it.

The same ending can refer to a person, animal, or thing; Hungarian third-person singular does not encode gender. Context supplies whether mellette means beside him, her, or it. Independent ő is unnecessary unless the person is contrasted.

A short dialogue

This exchange is natural informal speech:

– Hol vársz? – A mozi előtt, közvetlenül a pénztár mellett.

‘Where are you waiting?’ ‘In front of the cinema, right next to the ticket office.’

– És Zsófi? – Ő tíz perccel utánam érkezik.

‘And Zsófi?’ ‘She's arriving ten minutes after me.’

The first answer uses two overt noun landmarks. The second uses personal utánam. Independent ő is the subject of érkezik, not the complement of the postposition.

Formal and informal choices

Personal szerintem is neutral and frequent in conversation. Institutional writing often names an external source with szerint, or chooses a more specialized postposition such as alapján “on the basis of.”

Szerintem holnapra elkészülünk.

I think we'll be finished by tomorrow.

A benyújtott adatok alapján a kérelem elfogadható.

On the basis of the submitted data, the application can be accepted.

The first is neutral/informal personal stance. The second is formal/administrative and uses alapján, whose internal possessive-and-case history is no longer something speakers calculate. Register affects vocabulary, not the noun-before-postposition principle.

💡
Translate the function, not the visible pieces. Szerintem is usually “I think,” miattam can be “because of me” or “about me” after aggódik, and utánam can express spatial sequence or time.

Lexical restrictions

Some postpositions take an unmarked noun, but others select a case-marked complement: a házzal szemben “opposite the house,” a kerítésen kívül “outside the fence,” a városhoz közel “near the city.” These combinations must be learned lexically.

Az étterem a pályaudvarral szemben van.

The restaurant is opposite the railway station.

Do not remove instrumental -val/-vel merely because szemben follows as a separate word. Postpositions form a gradient between independent words and case-like grammar, and different members sit at different points on that gradient.

Common Mistakes

❌ Előtt a könyvtár találkozunk.

Incorrect — the landmark noun phrase must precede the postposition.

✅ A könyvtár előtt találkozunk.

We're meeting in front of the library.

❌ Szerint én ez túl drága.

Incorrect — a personal viewpoint requires the inflected form szerintem.

✅ Szerintem ez túl drága.

I think this is too expensive.

❌ Nem megyek el nélkül te.

Incorrect — nélkül takes a personal ending when it refers to you.

✅ Nem megyek el nélküled.

I'm not leaving without you.

❌ Az iroda a posta szemben van.

Incorrect — szemben selects instrumental -val/-vel on its noun complement.

✅ Az iroda a postával szemben van.

The office is opposite the post office.

Key Takeaways

  • Postpositions express spatial, temporal, causal, viewpoint, substitution, and absence relations.
  • An overt landmark normally precedes the postposition: a ház mögött, munka után, az eső miatt.
  • Personal reference appears in forms such as mellém, utánam, miattad, szerintük, nélkületek.
  • The whole phrase can move for topic or focus, but its internal noun-before-postposition order remains fixed.
  • Everyday personal stance favors szerintem; formal sources often use noun phrases with szerint or alapján.
  • Not every postposition takes an unmarked complement; case-governing combinations must be learned individually.
