Genderlessness, Singulars, and Plurals: Meanings and Usage

Hungarian lets speakers leave gender unexpressed while still being precise about number, possession, and a noun's relation to the event. Ő a főnököm can mean “He is my boss” or “She is my boss.” Meanwhile, főnökökkel packs plural “bosses” and instrumental-comitative “with” into one noun form. This difference matters because natural Hungarian does not reproduce every distinction that English requires.

This page focuses on when speakers use gender-neutral reference, an unmarked singular, or an ordinary plural. The forms page gives the morphology; the contrasts page handles difficult choices. Unless marked otherwise, examples are neutral modern standard Hungarian.

Referring to people without grammatical gender

Use ő for one previously identified person and ők for several people. Neither pronoun identifies gender. Hungarian often omits a subject pronoun when the verb ending and context already identify the participant, but ő is useful when introducing, contrasting, or clarifying who is meant.

Ő a szomszédom, és egy kórházban dolgozik.

He/She is my neighbor and works in a hospital.

Ők a kollégáim; minden reggel együtt utazunk.

They are my colleagues; we travel together every morning.

A conventional translation with he or she would force a choice that the first Hungarian sentence does not make. If the context does not reveal that information, a responsible English translation may instead use singular they or state that ő is gender-neutral. The Hungarian sentence itself is complete.

When gender is relevant, choose a lexical expression: a nő “the woman,” a férfi “the man,” a lány “the girl,” or a contextually appropriate gender-specific noun. Do not add this information automatically. Occupational nouns such as orvos “doctor,” tanár “teacher,” mérnök “engineer,” and elnök “president/chair” can refer to people of any gender.

Az új mérnök bemutatta a tervet, aztán válaszolt a kérdésekre.

The new engineer presented the plan and then answered the questions.

💡
Gender-neutral reference is not vagueness. Hungarian can identify a person by role, name, discourse position, or pronoun without encoding the he/she distinction required by traditional English pronouns.

Talking about one identifiable entity

Use the unmarked singular when one entity is meant and quantity is not supplied elsewhere. The article helps establish whether it is newly introduced (egy) or identifiable (a/az).

Egy vendég vár a recepción.

A guest is waiting at reception.

A vendég a recepción vár.

The guest is waiting at reception.

The difference between these sentences is definiteness and information structure, not gender. Vendég can refer to a man, a woman, or a person whose gender is unknown. It remains morphologically singular in both.

Hungarian then attaches relations to that noun: a vendéggel “with the guest,” a vendégnek “to/for the guest,” a vendégről “about the guest.” English uses function words before the noun; Hungarian case suffixes follow it and obey vowel harmony or assimilation.

A vendéggel a programváltozásról beszéltem.

I spoke with the guest about the schedule change.

The two marked nouns perform different roles even though English introduces both with prepositions. This packaging is a central organizing principle of Hungarian noun phrases.

Naming an ordinary group

Use plural -(V)k when a group is discussed without a numeral or quantifier already expressing its size. Definite a házak means “the houses”; indefinite bare házak can introduce some houses or discuss houses as a group.

Új házak épülnek a folyó mellett.

New houses are being built beside the river.

A házak előtt magas fák állnak.

Tall trees stand in front of the houses.

Plural is not limited to physical objects. Abstract nouns can be plural when the speaker means distinguishable kinds, instances, rights, experiences, or opportunities.

Az utazás során különleges élményekkel gazdagodtunk.

During the trip, we gained extraordinary experiences.

Az új rendszer több lehetőséget kínál a kisvállalkozásoknak.

The new system offers more opportunities to small businesses. (formal)

In élményekkel, plural élmény-ek is followed by assimilated -vel → -kel. In kisvállalkozásoknak, the compound kisvállalkozás takes plural -ok and dative -nak. English spreads comparable relations across word order, prepositions, and possessive constructions; Hungarian builds them at the noun's right edge.

Quantity already stated: keep the noun singular

After a cardinal numeral, Hungarian normally uses a singular noun: két alma “two apples,” öt könyv “five books,” száz ember “one hundred people.” Several quantity words behave similarly, including sok “many/much,” kevés “few/little,” néhány “a few,” and minden “every.”

Négy szék és két asztal fér el a szobában.

Four chairs and two tables fit in the room.

Sok érdekes könyv jelent meg idén.

Many interesting books were published this year.

English puts plural marking on chairs, tables, and books even though number is already overt. Hungarian normally avoids that duplication. The singular after a numeral still refers to multiple entities; it is a grammatical singular licensed by an explicit quantity.

The verb is commonly singular with a numeral phrase headed by this singular noun: Négy szék elfér “Four chairs fit.” Broader agreement patterns and exceptions belong on the quantified-singular usage page.

Characterizing one person or several

With present-tense third-person noun and adjective predicates, Hungarian normally omits “is/are.” Number is carried by the subject and predicate instead: A pályázó tapasztalt “The applicant is experienced,” but A pályázók tapasztaltak “The applicants are experienced.”

A jelölt nyugodt és magabiztos.

The candidate is calm and confident.

A jelöltek nyugodtak és magabiztosak.

The candidates are calm and confident.

Ő zenész, a testvérei pedig táncosok.

He/She is a musician, while his/her siblings are dancers.

Neither nyugodt nor magabiztos marks gender. Their plural forms nyugodtak, magabiztosak mark number. Noun predicates behave similarly: zenész would become zenészek with a plural subject. The example uses plural táncosok because it describes the siblings, not because of their genders.

For location or existence, use van/vannak: A jelölt az irodában van “The candidate is in the office”; A jelöltek az irodában vannak “The candidates are in the office.” This is a different construction from zero-copula characterization.

Generic statements and kinds

Hungarian can use singular or plural to make general statements, but they present the category differently. Definite singular often describes a species, type, institution, or representative member: A kutya társas állat “The dog is a social animal.” Plural A kutyák társas állatok views the members collectively. Both can be grammatical; context decides which perspective is natural.

A háziméh fontos szerepet játszik a beporzásban.

The honeybee plays an important role in pollination.

A méhek tavasszal különösen aktívak.

Bees are especially active in spring.

The first is a type-level generalization (neutral/scientific); the second makes a general statement about plural members. English often permits similar variation, but article use does not line up perfectly: generic English can use bare plural bees, whereas Hungarian commonly has definite plural a méhek.

A short dialogue

This exchange is informal, between two friends.

– Ki az új lakótársad?

‘Who is your new flatmate?’ (informal)

– Ő Dorka. Grafikus, és két macskája van.

‘This is Dorka. She's a graphic designer, and she has two cats.’ (informal)

– A macskák is itt laknak?

‘Do the cats live here too?’ (informal)

– Igen, de nagyon csendesek.

‘Yes, but they're very quiet.’ (informal)

The name supplies gender in the English translation, not the pronoun ő. Két macskája keeps macska inside a possessive quantity construction, while later a macskák uses an ordinary plural because the already established animals are now the topic. Predicate csendesek agrees with that plural topic.

Formal and informal reference

Genderlessness persists across registers. Formal Hungarian may prefer a full title or role, whereas informal speech uses a name, a pronoun, or subject omission.

A pályázó benyújtotta a szükséges dokumentumokat.

The applicant submitted the required documents. (formal)

Ő már elküldte a papírokat, én még nem.

He/She has already sent the papers, but I haven't yet. (informal)

Formal pályázó is role-based and gender-neutral. Informal ő is also gender-neutral. Dokumentumokat and papírokat are plural accusatives; the nouns carry number before the object ending. The register difference changes lexical choice and explicitness, not grammatical gender.

💡
Ask what the discourse already supplies. If a numeral gives quantity, keep the noun singular; if context identifies a person, ő can refer back without gender; if an established group becomes the topic, use the ordinary plural.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating ő as specifically masculine or feminine.

❌ Az „ő” névmás csak férfira utal.

Incorrect claim — the pronoun ő can refer to a person of any gender.

✅ Az „ő” névmás nőre és férfira is utalhat.

The pronoun ő can refer to both a woman and a man.

2. Copying the English plural after a numeral.

❌ Két macskák alszanak a kanapén.

Incorrect — the numeral already expresses plural quantity.

✅ Két macska alszik a kanapén.

Two cats are sleeping on the sofa.

3. Using the zero-copula pattern for a location.

❌ A vendégek a kertben.

Incomplete as a neutral statement of location — vannak is required.

✅ A vendégek a kertben vannak.

The guests are in the garden.

4. Leaving a characterizing predicate singular.

❌ A pályázók tapasztalt.

Incorrect — the plural subject requires a plural predicate adjective.

✅ A pályázók tapasztaltak.

The applicants are experienced.

Key Takeaways

  • Ő and occupational nouns can refer to people without stating gender.
  • Use an unmarked singular for one entity and after numerals or many quantifiers.
  • Use -(V)k for an ordinary group whose plurality is not already supplied by a quantity word.
  • Abstract nouns can be plural when they denote separate experiences, types, rights, or opportunities.
  • Present-tense predicates mark number but not gender: a jelölt nyugodt, a jelöltek nyugodtak.
