English-Speaker Errors in Suffixes and Number: Forms and Core Pattern

English mostly places separate words around a noun, while Hungarian builds grammatical information into suffix chains. That difference makes beginner errors systematic: the learner chooses the right case meaning but the wrong harmonic form, drops a linking vowel, pluralizes twice after a numeral, or attaches the correct pieces in the wrong order. This page presents the repair architecture; later pages explain usage and difficult choices.

Start with a small suffix map

Suffixes with vowels usually follow the base's vowel harmony. Back-vowel words select back forms; front-vowel words select front forms, with rounding affecting three-way suffixes.

FunctionBackFront unroundedFront rounded
in-ban: házban-ben: kertben, földben
to/for-nak: Annának-nek: Péternek, Tündének
toward-hoz: ablakhoz-hez: székhez-höz: földhöz
plural-(V)k: házak-(V)k: kertek-(V)k: gyümölcsök

The linking vowel represented by (V) is not optional decoration. Consonant-final bases frequently need it before plural -k or accusative -t: házak, házat; könyvek, könyvet; gyümölcsök, gyümölcsöt. Its exact quality is partly lexical, so learn singular, plural, and accusative together.

A kulcsok a fiókban vannak, a szemüveg pedig a könyvek mellett.

The keys are in the drawer, and the glasses are beside the books.

Betettem a gyümölcsöt a hűtőbe.

I put the fruit in the refrigerator.

💡
For every new noun, record three forms: dictionary singular, plural, and accusative. könyv – könyvek – könyvet reveals linking vowels before they become an error.

One expression of number after a numeral

After a cardinal numeral or quantity word such as sok, néhány, minden, and az összes, the Hungarian noun is normally morphologically singular. The numeral already supplies quantity. A quantified subject therefore takes singular agreement in standard Hungarian.

Három vendég érkezett a délutáni vonattal.

Three guests arrived on the afternoon train.

Sok érdekes kérdés maradt a beszélgetés végére.

Many interesting questions remained for the end of the discussion.

English marks plurality on both three and guests; Hungarian does not. Without a numeral, ordinary plural -k returns: A vendégek megérkeztek “The guests arrived.”

Suffix order: case comes at the outside

Hungarian suffixes have ordered zones. For a basic noun, number or possessive marking comes before the case suffix. Case tells the role of the completed noun phrase and therefore stands at the outer edge.

StructureSegmentationMeaning
házakbanház + ak + banin houses
könyvembenkönyv + em + benin my book
könyveimbenkönyv + e + i + m + benin my books
barátaimmalbarát + a + i + m + valwith my friends

The last surface form hides assimilation: underlying -val loses its v, and the final consonant of the preceding word is lengthened. Do not rearrange the visible pieces as if they were separate English words.

A régi fényképeimet a nagyszüleimnél hagytam.

I left my old photographs at my grandparents' place.

Consonant assimilation with -val/-vel and -vá/-vé

After a vowel, -val/-vel remains visible: Annával, kávéval. After most consonants, its v fully assimilates and the preceding consonant is written long: ház + val → házzal, kéz + vel → kézzel, bot + val → bottal. Hungarian multigraphs lengthen according to their spelling: nagy + val → naggyal, kulcs + val → kulccsal, busz + val → busszal.

Naggyal jöttem a koncertre, utána pedig busszal mentünk haza.

I came to the concert with Nagy, and afterward we went home by bus.

Egy régi kulccsal sikerült kinyitnunk a kaput.

We managed to open the gate with an old key.

The translative -vá/-vé behaves similarly: vízzé “into water,” emberré “into a person,” naggyá “into big/great.” See assimilation forms for further patterns.

Accents are grammatical spelling, not decoration

Hungarian distinguishes short and long vowels in writing and pronunciation: a/á, e/é, i/í, o/ó, ö/ő, u/ú, ü/ű. Length can distinguish words, and suffixes must retain their prescribed accents.

Kérek két körtét és egy üveg szőlőlevet.

I'd like two pears and a bottle of grape juice.

Az őr örül, hogy végre megérkezett a váltás.

The guard is glad that the relief shift has finally arrived.

Őr “guard” and örül “is glad” show that ő and ö are different vowels, not optional styles of one letter. Search systems and spellcheckers cannot reliably repair a missing accent after meaning has changed.

Object-sensitive conjugation belongs to the same system

English verb shape does not normally depend on whether the object is “a book” or “the book.” Hungarian commonly uses the general conjugation with an indefinite object and the definite conjugation with a definite third-person object.

Olvasok egy rövid cikket a vonaton.

I'm reading a short article on the train.

Olvasom a cikket, amelyet tegnap küldtél.

I'm reading the article that you sent yesterday.

The noun's accusative -t and the verb's agreement form work together. Literal substitution of an English verb ignores this grammatical information.

💡
Build a Hungarian sentence from grammatical decisions, not translated tokens: quantify the noun, choose its number, assemble its suffix chain, then choose the verb conjugation from the object's definiteness.

Segmentation exercise

Analyze barátaimmal “with my friends.” Begin with barát. The linking vowel -a- supports possessed morphology; -i- marks several possessed friends; -m marks a first-person singular possessor; outer -val means “with.” Assimilation produces -mmal, so the surface form is barátaimmal, not barátaimval and not barátvalaim.

A barátaimmal ünnepeltem a vizsga végét.

I celebrated the end of the exam with my friends.

Common Mistakes

❌ A kertban két padok van.

Incorrect: wrong harmony, plural after a numeral, and wrong agreement.

✅ A kertben két pad van.

There are two benches in the garden.

❌ Tegnap három vendégek érkeztek.

Incorrect English-style double plurality after három.

✅ Tegnap három vendég érkezett.

Three guests arrived yesterday.

❌ A régi kulcsval nyitottam ki az ajtót.

Incorrect: -val assimilates after the multigraph cs.

✅ A régi kulccsal nyitottam ki az ajtót.

I opened the door with the old key.

❌ Kerek egy pohar vizet.

Incorrect: missing accents change kérek and pohár, and víz requires í.

✅ Kérek egy pohár vizet.

I'd like a glass of water.

Key Takeaways

  • Select harmonic suffix variants from the word's vowel pattern.
  • Learn linking vowels through plural and accusative forms.
  • Numerals and quantity words normally take a singular noun and singular agreement.
  • Put plural/possessive material before the outer case suffix.
  • Write assimilation, including long multigraphs, in standard orthography.
  • Preserve every accent and choose general versus definite verb forms from object definiteness.
