Impersonal passive

Hindi extends the participle + जाना pattern beyond ordinary transitive passives. In मुझसे चला नहीं जाता “I cannot manage to walk,” no patient has been promoted to subject: चलना is intransitive, and the experiencer is marked by से. With no nominative agreement controller, the predicate appears in default masculine singular. This construction, traditionally associated with भाववाच्य, often expresses inability, lack of volitional control, a general possibility, or an impersonal proposal.

The especially common negative ability pattern receives further treatment on ability-like passive negatives. Here the focus is the construction’s syntax and its wider range.

No promoted patient, no ordinary subject agreement

An ordinary passive reorganizes a transitive event: active लोग चिट्ठी लिखते हैं becomes passive चिट्ठी लिखी जाती है, with चिट्ठी controlling feminine agreement. An impersonal passive can be built from an intransitive event such as walking, sitting, sleeping, or living. Since there is no patient to promote, Hindi uses default masculine singular -आ and masculine singular forms of जाना.

से-marked experiencerGender/number in meaningImpersonal predicate
मोहन सेmasculine singularचला नहीं जाता
सीमा सेfeminine singularचला नहीं जाता
बच्चों सेpluralचला नहीं जाता
उन महिलाओं सेfeminine pluralचला नहीं जाता

दर्द के कारण मोहन से चला नहीं जाता।

dard ke kāraṇ mohan se calā nahīṃ jātā.

Because of the pain, Mohan cannot manage to walk.

दर्द के कारण सीमा से चला नहीं जाता।

dard ke kāraṇ sīmā se calā nahīṃ jātā.

Because of the pain, Seema cannot manage to walk.

इतनी देर बच्चों से चुप नहीं बैठा जाता।

itnī der baccoṃ se cup nahīṃ baiṭhā jātā.

The children cannot sit quietly for that long.

The feminine Seema and plural children do not trigger चली जाती or बैठे जाते. They are oblique experiencers, not grammatical subjects. This default agreement lets a speaker say मुझसे उठा नहीं गया without marking the speaker’s gender, unlike active मैं उठ नहीं सका/सकी.

💡
Do not agree an impersonal passive with the person translated as English “I,” “she,” or “they.” A से phrase is not the nominative controller. With an intransitive predicate and no promoted patient, use default masculine singular.

The negative inability reading

The most characteristic pattern is X से + participle + नहीं + जाना. It portrays the event as something the experiencer cannot bring about or sustain. The obstacle may be physical, emotional, situational, or dispositional.

इतनी गर्मी में मुझसे सोया नहीं जाता।

itnī garmī meṃ mujhse soyā nahīṃ jātā.

I cannot sleep in this heat.

उससे किसी का दुख देखा नहीं जाता।

usse kisī kā dukh dekhā nahīṃ jātā.

He/She cannot bear to see anyone suffer.

रवि से पाँच मिनट भी चुप नहीं रहा जाता।

ravi se pā̃c minaṭ bhī cup nahīṃ rahā jātā.

Ravi cannot keep quiet for even five minutes.

The last sentence can criticize Ravi’s disposition, while रवि चुप नहीं रह सकता more directly states inability. मुझसे देखा नहीं जाता often means “I cannot bear to watch,” not that the speaker’s eyesight has failed. Context supplies the type of noncontrol.

This nuance is why the impersonal passive is not simply a decorative synonym of सकना. It presents the event as resistant to the experiencer, often with an embodied or spontaneous feel.

Tense and aspect on the जाना layer

The construction is layered like other Hindi predicates. The lexical participle identifies the event, जा supplies the impersonal frame, a following aspectual element can locate the event internally, and the auxiliary locates it in time.

FormTypical interpretation
मुझसे चला नहीं जाताI generally cannot manage to walk
मुझसे चला नहीं जा रहा हैI am unable to walk right now
मुझसे चला नहीं गयाI could not manage to walk
मुझसे चला नहीं जाएगाI will not be able to manage the walk

आज कमज़ोरी के कारण मुझसे उठा नहीं जा रहा है।

āj kamzorī ke kāraṇ mujhse uṭhā nahīṃ jā rahā hai.

Because of weakness, I am unable to get up today.

कल दर्द के कारण मुझसे चला नहीं गया।

kal dard ke kāraṇ mujhse calā nahīṃ gayā.

Because of the pain, I could not manage to walk yesterday.

मुझसे इतनी दूर पैदल चला नहीं जाएगा।

mujhse itnī dūr paidal calā nahīṃ jāegā.

I will not be able to walk that far.

The past example still has no patient that could control agreement. When a transitive inability construction contains an unmarked object, agreement can instead surface with that object: मुझसे किताब पढ़ी नहीं गई “I could not manage to read the book.” The default rule belongs specifically to clauses with no eligible nominative controller.

Affirmative possibility and deliberative questions

Plain affirmative impersonal habituals are much less common than the negative inability construction. Affirmative examples become natural when a modal or subjunctive supplies a clear meaning: general possibility जा सकता है, deliberation जाए, or an inclusive proposal.

इस बरामदे में आराम से बैठा जा सकता है।

is barāmde meṃ ārām se baiṭhā jā saktā hai.

One can sit comfortably on this veranda.

इतनी महँगाई में कैसे जिया जाए?

itnī mahãgāī meṃ kaise jiyā jāe?

How is one supposed to live with prices this high?

अब चला जाए?

ab calā jāe?

Shall we get going now?

क्या यहाँ रात भर रुका जा सकता है?

kyā yahā̃ rāt bhar rukā jā saktā hai?

Is it possible to stay here overnight?

अब चला जाए? is a conventional, indirect proposal (informal). It does not mean that a person is literally “being walked.” The impersonal subjunctive leaves the actor unexpressed and invites the group to adopt the proposed action.

💡
Affirmative impersonal forms need a discourse reason to suppress the actor. यहाँ बैठा जा सकता है expresses general possibility; ordinary “I sit here” remains active मैं यहाँ बैठता/बैठती हूँ.

Contrast with a true personal passive

The surface shapes can look similar, so test for an unmarked patient. If one is present, it normally controls agreement. Without one, the default masculine singular is evidence for impersonal alignment.

यात्रा अगले सप्ताह तक टाली गई।

yātrā agle saptāh tak ṭālī gaī.

The trip was postponed until next week.

दोनों यात्राएँ अगले सप्ताह तक टाली गईं।

donoṃ yātrāẽ agle saptāh tak ṭālī gaīṃ.

Both trips were postponed until next week.

थकान के कारण हमसे आगे चला नहीं गया।

thakān ke kāraṇ hamse āge calā nahīṃ gayā.

Because of exhaustion, we could not continue walking.

The first two are personal passives with feminine singular and plural agreement. The last has plural हमसे but no patient, so it remains default चला गया.

Common Mistakes

Agreeing with a feminine experiencer

❌ सीमा से इतनी दूर चली नहीं जाती।

Incorrect for the impersonal inability construction — सीमा से does not control agreement.

✅ सीमा से इतनी दूर चला नहीं जाता।

sīmā se itnī dūr calā nahīṃ jātā.

Seema cannot manage to walk that far.

Agreeing with a plural experiencer

❌ बच्चों से देर तक बैठे नहीं जाते।

Incorrect in the intended impersonal reading — बच्चों से is oblique.

✅ बच्चों से देर तक बैठा नहीं जाता।

baccoṃ se der tak baiṭhā nahīṃ jātā.

The children cannot manage to sit for long.

Using ने for the experiencer

❌ मैंने आज चला नहीं जाता।

Incorrect — this construction requires the oblique experiencer मुझसे.

✅ मुझसे आज चला नहीं जाता।

mujhse āj calā nahīṃ jātā.

I cannot manage to walk today.

Using the construction for an ordinary habitual choice

❌ मुझसे रोज़ दफ़्तर पैदल चला नहीं जाता।

Wrong for ‘I do not walk to the office every day’ — this says inability, not a routine choice.

✅ मैं रोज़ दफ़्तर पैदल नहीं जाता।

maĩ roz daftar paidal nahīṃ jātā.

I do not walk to the office every day. (male speaker)

Mistaking completive जाना for an impersonal passive

❌ वह स्टेशन पहुँचा गया।

Incorrect for ‘He reached the station’ — पहुँचना has no patient to passivize in that reading.

✅ वह स्टेशन पहुँच गया।

vah sṭeśan pahũc gayā.

He reached the station.

Key Takeaways

An impersonal passive has no promoted nominative patient, so the predicate defaults to masculine singular regardless of the से-marked experiencer’s gender or number. Negative forms typically express inability or noncontrol; modal and subjunctive forms support general possibility and proposals. Do not force the construction where Hindi simply needs an active habitual or a lexical जाना vector.
