Hypothetical होता paradigm

Bare होता, होती, होते, होतीं can present a state as imagined rather than actual: अगर मैं डॉक्टर होता... “if I were a doctor...,” अगर मेरे पास कार होती... “if I had a car....” These forms are the agreeing habitual participle of होना, but without a present or past auxiliary they acquire a hypothetical or counterfactual reading in the right construction. They mark gender and number, not person.

Compact agreement paradigm

ControllerHypothetical formIllustrative condition
masculine singularहोताअगर मैं तैयार होता...
feminine singularहोतीअगर मैं तैयार होती...
masculine/mixed plural or honorificहोतेअगर हम तैयार होते...
feminine plural, standaloneहोतींअगर वे तैयार होतीं...

अगर मैं डॉक्टर होता, तो गाँव में काम करता।

agar maĩ ḍokṭar hotā, to gā̃v meṃ kām kartā.

If I were a doctor, I would work in a village. (male speaker)

अगर मैं डॉक्टर होती, तो गाँव में काम करती।

agar maĩ ḍokṭar hotī, to gā̃v meṃ kām kartī.

If I were a doctor, I would work in a village. (female speaker)

अगर हम पास होते, तो आपकी मदद करते।

agar ham pās hote, to āpkī madad karte.

If we were nearby, we would help you. (male or mixed group)

अगर दोनों बहनें यहाँ होतीं, तो सब सँभाल लेतीं।

agar donoṃ bahneṃ yahā̃ hotīṃ, to sab sãbhāl letīṃ.

If both sisters were here, they would handle everything.

The same four-way gender-number contrast can appear in the condition and result. First-person मैं does not create a special ending: a male speaker uses होता, a female speaker होती.

💡
Do not look for person endings on hypothetical होता. Unlike subjunctive होऊँ/हो/हों, this paradigm is participial: choose -ता/-ती/-ते/-तीं from gender and number.

Copular identity and property

The imagined state can be an identity, role, or property.

अगर वह मालिक होता, तो नियम बदल देता।

agar vah mālik hotā, to niyam badal detā.

If he were the owner, he would change the rules.

अगर रीना थोड़ी कम व्यस्त होती, तो हमारे साथ आती।

agar rīnā thoṛī kam vyast hotī, to hamāre sāth ātī.

If Reena were a little less busy, she would come with us.

The result often uses another bare habitual participle, देता/आती, to express the unreal consequence. English uses would in the result but formal were in the condition; Hindi marks both parts through participial agreement and the conditional frame.

Location, existence, and possession

अगर वह अभी यहाँ होता, तो हमें सही रास्ता बता देता।

agar vah abhī yahā̃ hotā, to hameṃ sahī rāstā batā detā.

If he were here now, he would tell us the right route.

अगर कमरे में एक और खिड़की होती, तो हवा बेहतर आती।

agar kamre meṃ ek aur khiṛkī hotī, to havā behtar ātī.

If the room had another window, the ventilation would be better.

अगर हमारे पास दो गाड़ियाँ होतीं, तो यह आसान होता।

agar hamāre pās do gāṛiyā̃ hotīṃ, to yah āsān hotā.

If we had two vehicles, this would be easy.

In the possession pattern, हमारे पास is an oblique possessor, not the agreement controller. Feminine plural गाड़ियाँ selects होतीं. The impersonal evaluation यह आसान होता is masculine singular.

Affirmative, negative, and question contrasts

अगर अमित आज ख़ाली होता, तो हमारे साथ चलता।

agar amit āj xālī hotā, to hamāre sāth caltā.

If Amit were free today, he would come with us.

अगर अमित आज ख़ाली न होता, तो क्या वह हाँ कहता?

agar amit āj xālī na hotā, to kyā vah hā̃ kahtā?

If Amit weren't free today, would he say yes?

न is compact and common in a counterfactual condition. नहीं होता is also possible and often more explicit in conversation. Initial क्या asks about the imagined consequence without changing agreement.

अगर यह काम इतना मुश्किल नहीं होता, तो क्या तुम इसे अकेले करते?

agar yah kām itnā muśkil nahīṃ hotā, to kyā tum ise akele karte?

If this work weren't so difficult, would you do it alone? (familiar, male addressee)

Hypothetical versus ordinary habitual होता है

Adding a present auxiliary normally creates an actual generalization rather than an unreal state.

यहाँ सर्दियों में अक्सर कोहरा होता है।

yahā̃ sardiyoṃ meṃ aksar kohrā hotā hai.

There is often fog here in winter.

अगर आज कोहरा होता, तो उड़ान देर से जाती।

agar āj kohrā hotā, to uṛān der se jātī.

If there were fog today, the flight would leave late.

In होता है, habitual होता plus present है asserts a recurring fact. Bare होता inside अगर...तो suspends actuality. An auxiliary is therefore not an optional English-style “be”; it changes the temporal-modal structure.

Present unreal and past counterfactual

Bare अगर मैं वहाँ होता can describe a present imagined state: “if I were there.” A missed past event usually adds a perfective layer before होता.

अगर मैं अभी तुम्हारे शहर में होता, तो तुमसे मिलने आता।

agar maĩ abhī tumhāre śahar meṃ hotā, to tumse milne ātā.

If I were in your city now, I would come meet you. (male speaker)

अगर मैंने संदेश देखा होता, तो तुरंत जवाब दिया होता।

agar maĩne sandeś dekhā hotā, to turant javāb diyā hotā.

If I had seen the message, I would have replied immediately.

The second stacks perfective देखा/दिया before counterfactual होता. Its internal object agreement and ergative ने belong to the full past counterfactual होता construction; the present page focuses on the agreement paradigm of होता itself.

💡
Time adverbs and aspectual layers disambiguate the English translation. Bare अभी वहाँ होता is present unreal “were there now”; perfective देखा होता is past counterfactual “had seen.”

Agreement when the semantic participant is oblique

अगर मुझसे ऐसी ग़लती होती, तो मैं तुरंत माफ़ी माँगता।

agar mujhse aisī ġaltī hotī, to maĩ turant māfī mā̃gtā.

If I made such a mistake, I would apologize immediately. (male speaker)

English makes “I” the subject of made. Hindi marks that participant with से, while feminine singular ग़लती controls होती. The result returns to nominative मैं and masculine माँगता.

Infinitive versus hypothetical होता

डॉक्टर होना आसान नहीं है।

ḍokṭar honā āsān nahīṃ hai.

Being a doctor is not easy.

Infinitive होना names a state as a verbal noun. It cannot serve as the finite hypothetical predicate in अगर मैं डॉक्टर होता.... English to be, being, and were must be mapped to different Hindi layers.

Common Mistakes

Adding the present auxiliary to an unreal condition

❌ अगर मैं शिक्षक होता हूँ, तो छोटे शहर में पढ़ाता।

Incorrect for a single present counterfactual — हूँ turns the first clause toward an actual habitual reading.

✅ अगर मैं शिक्षक होता, तो छोटे शहर में पढ़ाता।

agar maĩ śikṣak hotā, to choṭe śahar meṃ paṛhātā.

If I were a teacher, I would teach in a small city. (male speaker)

Ignoring feminine agreement

❌ अगर सीमा यहाँ होता, तो मदद करती।

Incorrect — feminine सीमा requires होती.

✅ अगर सीमा यहाँ होती, तो मदद करती।

agar sīmā yahā̃ hotī, to madad kartī.

If Seema were here, she would help.

Losing feminine plural nasalization

❌ अगर दोनों महिलाएँ तैयार होती, तो हम निकलते।

Incorrect with no auxiliary — feminine plural requires होतीं.

✅ अगर दोनों महिलाएँ तैयार होतीं, तो हम निकलते।

agar donoṃ mahilāẽ taiyār hotīṃ, to ham nikalte.

If both women were ready, we would leave. (male or mixed group)

Agreeing with an oblique possessor

❌ अगर मेरे पास समय होते, तो मैं आता।

Incorrect — masculine singular समय controls होता.

✅ अगर मेरे पास समय होता, तो मैं आता।

agar mere pās samay hotā, to maĩ ātā.

If I had time, I would come. (male speaker)

Using the infinitive as the hypothetical predicate

❌ अगर मैं वहाँ होना, तो तुम्हारी मदद करता।

Incorrect — होना is an infinitive; the hypothetical predicate must agree.

✅ अगर मैं वहाँ होता, तो तुम्हारी मदद करता।

agar maĩ vahā̃ hotā, to tumhārī madad kartā.

If I were there, I would help you. (male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Hypothetical होता/होती/होते/होतीं marks gender-number, not person.
  • Bare forms in an अगर...तो frame express imagined or counterfactual states; होता है normally asserts an actual habitual generalization.
  • Oblique possessors and accidental agents do not control agreement; the unmarked possessed or event noun does.
  • Perfective + होता builds a past counterfactual, while bare होता often expresses a present unreal state.
