Remote and counterfactual conditions

Remote conditions place a possibility at a distance from the speaker's working view of reality: it may be unlikely, purely imagined, tactfully proposed, or already known to be false. Hindi normally signals that distance through an imperfective or होता pattern, not through a single word equivalent to English would. The form chosen in each clause still presents its event from an aspectual viewpoint.

This page builds on open future conditions and the core counterfactual होता construction. The central contrast is not simply “future versus past.” It is open branch versus remote branch.

Open and remote versions of the same condition

An open condition leaves the condition as a live possibility. A remote condition asks the listener to enter a more hypothetical scenario. Compare the same lexical content:

अगर लैला कल आए, तो हम प्रस्ताव पर बात करेंगे।

agar lailā kal āe, to ham prastāv par bāt kareṅge.

If Laila comes tomorrow, we will discuss the proposal.

अगर लैला कल आती, तो हम प्रस्ताव पर बात करते।

agar lailā kal ātī, to ham prastāv par bāt karte.

If Laila came tomorrow, we would discuss the proposal.

The first condition uses the subjunctive आए and a future result: the speaker treats tomorrow's visit as genuinely open. The second uses the agreeing imperfective forms आती and करते without a finite auxiliary. These forms move both events into an imagined branch. आती agrees with feminine लैला; plural हम controls करते.

English marks remoteness with past-looking came and would discuss. Hindi does not insert a general-purpose “would.” Instead, the bare imperfective presents a characteristic action inside the imagined world. Its past-looking translation is a property of English conditional grammar, not proof that the Hindi event is past.

Speaker's stanceConditionResultTypical reading
Openअगर वह आएहम बात करेंगेHer coming remains a live possibility
Remoteअगर वह आतीहम बात करतेThe speaker steps into a less likely or imagined branch
Counterfactual stateअगर वह यहाँ होतीवह समझतीShe is not here, or the speaker imagines her not being here
💡
Do not decide between आए and आती by calculating an objective probability. The choice presents the speaker's stance. Two speakers can describe the same uncertain visit differently: one keeps it open, while the other deliberately makes it remote.

States with होता and actions with the bare imperfective

For a hypothetical state or identity, inflected होता supplies the unreal state. For an ordinary action, the agreeing imperfective participle often stands without था or है.

अगर मेरे पास कार होती, तो मैं बच्चों को स्कूल ले जाता।

agar mere pās kār hotī, to maĩ baccoṃ ko skūl le jātā.

If I had a car, I would take the children to school. (male speaker)

अगर यह कमरा थोड़ा बड़ा होता, तो हम यहीं बैठक करते।

agar yah kamrā thoṛā baṛā hotā, to ham yahīṃ baiṭhak karte.

If this room were a little bigger, we would hold the meeting right here.

In the first example, कार होती is a hypothetical possession state, while ले जाता profiles the action that would regularly or characteristically follow. In the second, masculine कमरा triggers बड़ा होता. The result करते agrees with हम.

The absence of an auxiliary is meaningful. Adding present है normally turns the clause into a real habitual generalization; adding past था makes it a past habitual description. Compare:

अगर नीरा देर से आती है, तो वह पहले संदेश भेजती है।

agar nīrā der se ātī hai, to vah pahle sandeś bhejtī hai.

If Neera is late, she sends a message first.

अगर नीरा देर से आती, तो वह पहले संदेश भेजती।

agar nīrā der se ātī, to vah pahle sandeś bhejtī.

If Neera were going to be late, she would send a message first.

The first sentence describes an observed habit. The second constructs an imagined test of Neera's expected behavior. Aspect is doing the organizing work: the same imperfective stem is anchored as factual by है, but left in a remote conditional frame when the auxiliary is absent.

Remoteness can be temporal, epistemic, or social

A remote condition need not assert that its premise is false. Speakers use it for several related kinds of distance:

  • a low-probability future: अगर वह मान जाता... “if he agreed...”;
  • an imagined present state: अगर मेरे पास समय होता... “if I had time...”;
  • tactful advice or a softened proposal;
  • a true counterfactual, when context establishes the opposite as fact.

यदि आप थोड़ा और रुकते, तो हमें ख़ुशी होती।

yadi āp thoṛā aur rukte, to hameṃ xushī hotī.

If you stayed a little longer, we would be delighted.

Here यदि is (formal); अगर is neutral and far more common in everyday conversation. The grammar makes the invitation less imposing by presenting the stay as the listener's imagined choice. It does not tell us that staying is impossible.

अगर मैं तुम्हारी जगह होता, तो अभी जवाब न देता।

agar maĩ tumhārī jagah hotā, to abhī javāb na detā.

If I were in your place, I wouldn't answer right now. (male speaker)

This common advice pattern is counterfactual in its condition—the speaker is not the addressee—but its purpose is pragmatic: it softens a recommendation. Hindi होता agrees with the speaker's gender: a woman says होती.

💡
A remote form supplies distance, not a fixed calendar location. Time adverbs such as अभी, कल, and उस समय establish when the imagined event occurs; the conditional morphology establishes how the speaker relates that event to reality.

Aspect inside the imagined branch

Remote conditionality does not erase aspect. Choose the inner layer according to the viewpoint you need:

Inner viewpointRemote formWhat it profiles
Characteristic / imperfectiveकरताAn action expected in the imagined situation
Ongoingकर रहा होताAn action in progress at an imagined reference point
Completedकिया होताA completed event on a counterfactual branch

अगर हम इस समय दिल्ली में होते, तो शायद बारिश देख रहे होते।

agar ham is samay dillī meṃ hote, to śāyad bāriś dekh rahe hote.

If we were in Delhi at this time, we would probably be watching the rain.

The progressive देख रहे opens an internal view of the activity. Both instances of होते agree with plural हम. By contrast, a completed imagined event uses a perfective layer; that pattern is treated fully under past unfulfilled conditions.

अगर राहुल ने रिपोर्ट ध्यान से पढ़ी होती, तो वह यह सवाल न पूछता।

agar rāhul ne riporṭ dhyān se paṛhī hotī, to vah yah savāl na pūchtā.

If Rahul had read the report carefully, he would not ask this question.

Because पढ़ी is perfective and transitive, राहुल ने is ergative and the unmarked feminine object रिपोर्ट controls पढ़ी होती. The result पूछता is imperfective and agrees with Rahul; it does not take ने. Conditional meaning never suspends the ordinary agreement system.

A short remote scenario

Suppose a team has not yet decided where to hold a retreat. One colleague keeps the mountain option deliberately hypothetical:

अगर हम पहाड़ों में जाते, तो सुबह जल्दी निकलते। वहाँ पहुँचकर थोड़ा आराम करते, फिर शाम को झील के पास घूमते। लेकिन अगर बारिश हो रही होती, तो शायद होटल में ही रुकते।

agar ham pahāṛoṃ meṃ jāte, to subah jaldī nikalte. vahā̃ pahũckar thoṛā ārām karte, phir śām ko jhīl ke pās ghūmte. lekin agar bāriś ho rahī hotī, to śāyad hoṭal meṃ hī rukte.

If we went to the mountains, we would leave early in the morning. After arriving, we would rest a little, then walk by the lake in the evening. But if it were raining, we would probably stay at the hotel.

The sequence जाते—निकलते—करते—घूमते lays out expected stages within one remote plan. हो रही होती shifts from characteristic event sequencing to an activity in progress at the imagined time. The aspect change lets the rain function as background circumstances rather than the next event in the itinerary.

💡
Do not repeat अगर and तो mechanically in every sentence of a hypothetical passage. Once the remote world is established, coordinated bare imperfectives can continue it. Repeat the markers only when they clarify a new condition or contrast.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding a present auxiliary to a remote condition

❌ अगर मेरे पास आज ख़ाली समय होता है, तो मैं ज़रूर आता।

Incorrect — होता है describes a real recurring relation, not the intended imagined present.

✅ अगर मेरे पास आज ख़ाली समय होता, तो मैं ज़रूर आता।

agar mere pās āj xālī samay hotā, to maĩ zarūr ātā.

If I had free time today, I would definitely come. (male speaker)

2. Treating remote morphology as necessarily past

❌ अगर वह कल आती थी, तो हम बात करते।

Incorrect for the intended future hypothetical — थी anchors a past habit.

✅ अगर वह कल आती, तो हम बात करते।

agar vah kal ātī, to ham bāt karte.

If she came tomorrow, we would talk.

3. Ignoring gender agreement with होता

❌ अगर मीरा यहाँ होता, तो वह मदद करती।

Incorrect — होता does not agree with feminine मीरा.

✅ अगर मीरा यहाँ होती, तो वह मदद करती।

agar mīrā yahā̃ hotī, to vah madad kartī.

If Meera were here, she would help.

4. Adding ने to an imperfective remote action

❌ अगर अर्जुन ने रोज़ आता, तो काम जल्दी होता।

Incorrect — the imperfective remote form आता does not license ergative ने.

✅ अगर अर्जुन रोज़ आता, तो काम जल्दी होता।

agar arjun roz ātā, to kām jaldī hotā.

If Arjun came every day, the work would get done quickly.

5. Copying English would as a future form

❌ अगर तुम पूछते, तो मैं बताऊँगा।

Incorrect for a fully remote reading — the future result jumps back to the open branch.

✅ अगर तुम पूछते, तो मैं बताता।

agar tum pūchte, to maĩ batātā.

If you asked, I would tell you. (male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Open conditions keep a branch live; bare imperfective and होता patterns place it at a conceptual distance.
  • Remote morphology does not itself mean past or false. Context and time expressions locate the event and can make the premise merely unlikely, politely proposed, or truly counterfactual.
  • Each clause chooses its own viewpoint: imperfective for characteristic actions, progressive for an internal ongoing view, and perfective plus होता for completed counterfactual events.
  • Agreement and ergativity operate inside the aspectual layer exactly as they do elsewhere in Hindi.
