This doha, traditionally attributed to Kabir, tells the mind to respect process: repeated effort cannot force fruit before its season. Its patience is created grammatically through reduplication in धीरे-धीरे, direct address रे मना, two generalized होय clauses, and the juxtaposition ऋतु आए, फल होय without an overt “when … then.”
The saying has an oral and printed variant history. This page selects a familiar public-domain recitation—सब कुछ, सौ घड़ा, होय—and labels alternatives rather than pretending that one modern spelling is uniquely original. The older words are (literary/archaic in modern Standard Hindi); the proverbial message remains widely recognizable.
The selected public-domain reading
धीरे-धीरे रे मना, धीरे सब कुछ होय।
dhīre-dhīre re manā, dhīre sab kuch hoy.
Slowly, slowly, O mind; everything happens in its own time. (older poetic vernacular)
माली सींचे सौ घड़ा, ऋतु आए फल होय॥
mālī sīñce sau ghaṛā, ritu āe phal hoy.
Even if the gardener waters with a hundred pots, fruit comes only when its season arrives. (older poetic vernacular)
The English inserts even if, with, only, and when. Hindi states four compact scenes—mind, gradual happening, gardener watering, season and fruit—and relies on parallelism and world knowledge to connect them. That compression lets the image persuade instead of spelling out a lecture.
Which wording is being analyzed?
A public-domain कबीर वचनावली scan transcribes a close form as धीरे धीरे रे मना धीरे सब कछु … / माली सींचे सो घड़ा ऋतु आए फल होय; digitized copies differ over हाय/होय and सो/सौ, and another widespread recitation has plural सौ घड़े. The selected reading above uses:
- कुछ, the modernized equivalent of older कछु;
- सौ घड़ा, interpreting घड़ा as a measure/container unit—“a hundred potfuls”;
- होय, the older poetic form repeated at both line ends.
धीरे-धीरे रे मना, धीरे सब कछु होय; माली सींचे सौ घड़े, ऋतु आए फल होय।
dhīre-dhīre re manā, dhīre sab kachu hoy; mālī sīñce sau ghaṛe, ritu āe phal hoy.
Slowly, slowly, O mind; all things happen gradually. Though the gardener waters with a hundred pots, fruit comes when the season arrives. (variant wording)
कछु is an older “something/anything” form; सौ घड़े treats the pots as countable plural rather than a singular measure unit. Both variants support the same image, but their morphology is not identical. When citing the doha, retain one witnessed version consistently.
धीरे-धीरे: repetition as gradual progress
The first धीरे-धीरे is reduplication. A single धीरे can mean slowly or gently; repetition spreads the manner across time: step by step, little by little. It also gives the line an audible measured pace.
The third धीरे in धीरे सब कुछ होय is not redundant padding. The opening pair addresses the mind with a calming rhythm; the later adverb makes the general claim that outcomes unfold gradually. Modern prose would more often say हर चीज़ धीरे-धीरे होती है.
काम धीरे-धीरे आगे बढ़ रहा है; घबराने से वह जल्दी पूरा नहीं होगा।
kām dhīre-dhīre āge baṛh rahā hai; ghabrāne se vah jaldī pūrā nahīṃ hogā.
The work is moving forward little by little; worrying won't make it finish sooner. (modern neutral)
Hindi often uses reduplication to distribute an action or quality: एक-एक करके “one by one,” जगह-जगह “in various places,” सोच-समझकर “after careful thought.” Here the repeated adverb iconically slows the listener down.
रे मना: the mind as addressee
रे is a vocative particle (literary, folk-poetic, or very intimate). It directly calls to an addressee but does not by itself equal modern polite “please.” Depending on tone and relationship, रे in ordinary speech can sound intimate, rustic, patronizing, or rude. Learners should recognize it in songs, devotional poetry, and sayings rather than use it with strangers.
मना is a vocative form of मन “mind/heart.” The final -ा is not modern direct-case agreement and does not make the noun feminine. Together रे मना means “O mind,” a poetic speaker addressing his own restless mental faculty as though it were another person.
हे मन, धीरज रखो।
he man, dhīraj rakho.
O mind, be patient. (modern literary/devotional paraphrase)
Modern neutral advice would address a person instead—धीरज रखिए “please be patient”—or describe the speaker's own need—मुझे धीरज रखना चाहिए. The doha's self-address dramatizes an inner struggle: the speaker is both adviser and impatient listener.
सब कुछ होय: an older generalized predicate
सब कुछ means “everything / all things.” होय is an older vernacular form related to modern होना, common in premodern verse and preserved in proverbial quotation (archaic/poetic). In context it gives a generalized maxim: things come about gradually.
Modern Standard Hindi would normally say:
हर काम अपने समय पर होता है।
har kām apne samay par hotā hai.
Every task comes about in its own time. (modern neutral)
The habitual होता है explicitly marks a general truth. The verse's होय is shorter, rhymes with final होय, and carries the aphoristic register. Replacing modern होता है with होय in an ordinary work email would sound deliberately archaizing or playful.
माली सींचे: a generalized hypothetical scene
माली is the gardener, the overt subject of सींचे “waters.” The verb form can be read as a generalized subjunctive: let the gardener water / even if the gardener waters. There is no ergative ने because this is not a completed perfective report such as माली ने पौधे को सींचा.
The doha omits the object of सींचे—presumably a plant or tree. That omission is recoverable from the gardener-and-fruit frame. Making the object explicit would help prose but weaken the meter and universal image.
माली पौधे को कितना भी सींचे, फल समय से पहले नहीं लगेगा।
mālī paudhe ko kitnā bhī sīñce, phal samay se pahle nahīṃ lagegā.
However much the gardener waters the plant, it will not bear fruit before its time. (modern neutral paraphrase)
The modern concessive कितना भी … नहीं states the logic that the doha leaves implicit. The poem does not reject watering; it rejects the inference that greater immediate input can abolish natural timing.
सौ घड़ा: count noun or measure unit?
In ordinary modern counting, घड़ा “earthen pot” has direct plural घड़े: सौ घड़े “a hundred pots.” The selected proverbial wording सौ घड़ा is understandable when the container functions as a measure unit—“a hundred potfuls [of water]”—and it is also supported by the fixed meter and transmission of the line.
Compare a normal count with a measure-like use:
आँगन में पानी के तीन घड़े रखे हैं, पर माली ने पौधों पर दस घड़ा पानी डाल दिया।
ā̃gan meṃ pānī ke tīn ghaṛe rakhe haiṃ, par mālī ne paudhoṃ par das ghaṛā pānī ḍāl diyā.
Three water pots are kept in the courtyard, but the gardener poured ten potfuls of water on the plants. (second clause uses a colloquial measure-unit pattern)
The second pattern varies by speaker and region; careful neutral prose may prefer दस घड़े पानी or दस घड़ों का पानी. In the doha, do not “correct” सौ घड़ा without noting that सौ घड़े is itself a transmitted variant.
ऋतु आए, फल होय: condition and result by juxtaposition
The last half has two clauses: ऋतु आए “the season come” and फल होय “fruit come into being.” Neither जब nor तब/तो appears. Their order and meaning supply the temporal relation: when the proper season comes, fruit results.
आए is a subjunctive-like generalized form rather than a report of one past arrival. फल is generic singular: fruit as an outcome, not one numbered piece of fruit. Again होय closes the line, creating lexical and sonic parallelism with the first line.
जब सही ऋतु आएगी, तभी फल लगेगा।
jab sahī ritu āegī, tabhī phal lagegā.
Only when the right season arrives will fruit grow. (modern explicit prose)
The paraphrase supplies जब … तभी, future agreement आएगी with feminine ऋतु, and idiomatic फल लगेगा. The source line's bare juxtaposition is terser: season and fruit stand beside each other as cause and rightful result.
Ten instructive forms
| Form | Morpheme or syntax | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| धीरे-धीरे | adverb reduplication | spreads slowness across the process |
| रे | vocative particle | turns advice into intimate self-address |
| मना | poetic vocative of मन | personifies the restless mind |
| सब कुछ | totalizing indefinite phrase | generalizes beyond one task |
| होय | older form of होना | creates maxim-like register and rhyme |
| माली | unmarked subject | introduces a concrete analogy |
| सींचे | generalized subjunctive | supports “even if the gardener waters” |
| सौ घड़ा | number + container as measure | exaggerates effort without guaranteeing speed |
| ऋतु आए | subjunctive temporal clause | names the condition that effort cannot replace |
| फल होय | generic result clause | delivers the outcome at the line's end |
Common Mistakes
Using रे as ordinary polite address
❌ रे डॉक्टर, मेरी बात सुनिए।
Register clash—रे can sound rude or theatrically rustic here, not politely respectful.
✅ डॉक्टर साहब, मेरी बात सुनिए।
ḍokṭar sāhab, merī bāt sunie.
Doctor, please listen to me. (respectful)
Treating होय as a normal modern present form
❌ मेरा काम धीरे होय।
Incorrect in neutral modern Standard Hindi; होय is retained here as older poetic/proverbial language.
✅ मेरा काम धीरे-धीरे होता है।
merā kām dhīre-dhīre hotā hai.
My work happens gradually. (modern neutral)
Reading ऋतु as the object of फल
❌ फल ऋतु को आता है।
Incorrect role assignment—the season arrives, and fruit then develops; ऋतु is not the fruit's marked object.
✅ ऋतु आने पर फल लगता है।
ritu āne par phal lagtā hai.
Fruit develops when the season arrives.
Silently regularizing the selected witness
❌ ‘सौ घड़ा’ गलत है; मूल पंक्ति केवल ‘सौ घड़े’ हो सकती है।
Too categorical—both singular measure-like and plural count variants circulate in public-domain witnesses and recitation.
✅ इस पाठ में ‘सौ घड़ा’ है; दूसरे पाठों में ‘सौ घड़े’ भी मिलता है।
is pāṭh meṃ ‘sau ghaṛā’ hai; dūsre pāṭhoṃ meṃ ‘sau ghaṛe’ bhī miltā hai.
This reading has ‘sau ghara’; other readings also have ‘sau ghare.’ (scholarly neutral)
Key Takeaways
- धीरे-धीरे distributes slowness across a process and iconically controls the line's pace.
- रे मना is a poetic vocative, not a general polite form of address.
- Older होय and generalized सींचे/आए belong to the doha's literary-proverbial grammar.
- सौ घड़ा can be read as a measure-unit phrase; plural सौ घड़े is a transmitted variant.
- Bare ऋतु आए, फल होय leaves a temporal condition-result link implicit; modern prose normally states it more fully.
From poetic order to neutral prose
The doha first calms its addressee, then states a general truth, then gives an image, and only at the end names the decisive condition. Repetition slows the first line; the hyperbolic सौ घड़ा speeds effort up in the imagination; ऋतु आए then restores the proper timescale. Grammar and image enact impatience being corrected.
A neutral prose version must expose the concessive and temporal logic:
हे मन, धीरज रखो, क्योंकि हर काम धीरे-धीरे और अपने उचित समय पर पूरा होता है। माली पौधे को चाहे सौ घड़े पानी से सींच दे, फिर भी सही ऋतु आने से पहले फल नहीं लगेगा। प्रयास आवश्यक है, लेकिन कुछ परिणामों के लिए समय की भी आवश्यकता होती है।
he man, dhīraj rakho, kyoṅki har kām dhīre-dhīre aur apne ucit samay par pūrā hotā hai. mālī paudhe ko cāhe sau ghaṛe pānī se sīñc de, phir bhī sahī ritu āne se pahle phal nahīṃ lagegā. prayās āvaśyak hai, lekin kuch pariṇāmoṃ ke lie samay kī bhī āvaśyaktā hotī hai.
O mind, be patient, because every task is completed gradually and at its proper time. Even if the gardener waters the plant with a hundred pots of water, it will not bear fruit before the right season. Effort is necessary, but some results also require time. (modern neutral prose)
The paraphrase adds क्योंकि, चाहे … फिर भी, and पहले नहीं to state the reasoning directly. It is clearer for instruction, but the doha is more memorable because it trusts the listener to infer the relation between watering, season, and fruit.
