Original dialogue: doctor and patient

This original clinic dialogue teaches the grammar of describing symptoms and understanding routine instructions. Hindi often presents discomfort as a condition experienced by a person—आपको क्या तकलीफ़ है, गले में दर्द है, मुझे जाँच करानी होगी—rather than making the patient an English-style subject who “has” each symptom. The wider set of frames appears under health, pain, and bodily sensations.

The doctor and patient use respectful आप forms. The doctor is a woman in this constructed scene, which explains देख लेती हूँ; the patient's gender is not grammatically relevant to the symptom statements. The dialogue is language instruction, not medical advice or a diagnosis. Urgent or worsening symptoms require qualified medical care according to local guidance.

The complete original dialogue

ḍokṭar: batāie, āpko kyā taklīf hai? — marīz: kal rāt se gale meṃ dard hai aur halkā buxār bhī hai. — ḍokṭar: khā̃sī ho rahī hai? — marīz: hā̃, lekin sā̃s lene meṃ koī dikkat nahīṃ hai. — ḍokṭar: buxār nāpā thā? — marīz: jī, subah lagbhag sau ḍigrī fārenhāiṭ thā. — ḍokṭar: maĩ āpkā galā dekh letī hū̃. mũh kholie aur gahrī sā̃s lījie. — marīz: kyā mujhe koī jā̃c karānī hogī? — ḍokṭar: abhī nahīṃ. yah davā khāne ke bād lījie aur pānī pīte rahie. agar sā̃s lene meṃ dikkat ho yā buxār baṛhe, to turant ḍokṭar se sampark kījie.

Doctor: Tell me, what is troubling you? — Patient: I've had a sore throat since last night, and I also have a mild fever. — Doctor: Are you coughing? — Patient: Yes, but I have no difficulty breathing. — Doctor: Did you measure your temperature? — Patient: Yes, it was about 100 degrees Fahrenheit this morning. — Doctor: Let me take a look at your throat. Open your mouth and take a deep breath. — Patient: Will I need to have any tests done? — Doctor: Not at present. Take this medicine after eating and keep drinking water. If you have difficulty breathing or the fever rises, contact a doctor immediately.

The translation supplies I in “I've had a sore throat” and “I have no difficulty.” Hindi leaves the experiencer unspoken after the doctor has directly asked आपको. This is ordinary discourse cohesion, not an assertion that symptoms exist without a person experiencing them.

Lines 1–2: the experiencer and the location of pain

बताइए, आपको क्या तकलीफ़ है?

batāie, āpko kyā taklīf hai?

Tell me, what is troubling you? (respectful clinical question)

Respectful imperative बताइए invites the account. आपको is the oblique आप plus को and marks the experiencer. Feminine तकलीफ़ is the condition being asked about; क्या occupies the slot for the answer. The structure is closer to “What difficulty is there to you?” than to English What do you have?

The doctor could ask क्या परेशानी है? in neutral everyday language or आपको क्या समस्या है? in a more formal register. तकलीफ़ appropriately covers discomfort without presuming a diagnosis.

कल रात से गले में दर्द है और हल्का बुख़ार भी है।

kal rāt se gale meṃ dard hai aur halkā buxār bhī hai.

I've had a sore throat since last night, and I also have a mild fever.

कल रात से marks a starting point that continues to the present. गले में is oblique गले plus locative में: pain is located “in the throat.” Masculine हल्का agrees with बुख़ार. Additive भी follows the fever phrase and signals a second symptom.

The omitted experiencer in both conjuncts is the patient. A fully explicit version, मुझे कल रात से गले में दर्द है…, is grammatical, but repeating मुझे after आपको क्या तकलीफ़ है? adds no needed reference.

💡
Health descriptions are frames, not interchangeable vocabulary lists: person को symptom है, body part में दर्द है, and body part दुख रहा है assign participants differently.

Lines 3–4: ongoing cough and breathing difficulty

खाँसी हो रही है?

khā̃sī ho rahī hai?

Are you coughing? / Is a cough occurring?

No overt experiencer appears, but the doctor is still asking about the patient. Feminine खाँसी controls हो रही है. The progressive presents an ongoing episode; खाँसी है? asks more generally whether a cough is present.

हाँ, लेकिन साँस लेने में कोई दिक्कत नहीं है।

hā̃, lekin sā̃s lene meṃ koī dikkat nahīṃ hai.

Yes, but I have no difficulty breathing.

साँस लेने में contains oblique infinitive लेने before में and means “in taking breath / in breathing.” कोई…नहीं is the ordinary negative-indefinite frame: in this context, “no difficulty.” The sentence does not literally say मैं or मुझे; the clinical question keeps the patient as the active experiencer.

English speakers sometimes translate breathing with a finite progressive. Hindi instead nominalizes the activity inside the locative frame: साँस लेने में दिक्कत. This packages the function in which a problem occurs.

Lines 5–6: an omitted object and reported measurement

बुख़ार नापा था?

buxār nāpā thā?

Did you measure your temperature? (literally, ‘Had [you] measured the fever?’)

The subject “you” is omitted. In a fully explicit perfective transitive clause, the doctor could say आपने बुख़ार नापा था?. The short clinical question drops आपने because turn direction makes the agent obvious. Masculine नापा था agrees with unmarked masculine object बुख़ार.

था gives the measurement prior relevance: the doctor asks whether the patient had already checked it. A simple बुख़ार नापा? is more clipped (informal spoken); the version with था better frames the act as earlier background to the consultation.

जी, सुबह लगभग सौ डिग्री फ़ारेनहाइट था।

jī, subah lagbhag sau ḍigrī fārenhāiṭ thā.

Yes, it was about 100 degrees Fahrenheit this morning.

Polite जी acknowledges the question. The understood referent is the measured fever. लगभग marks approximation, masculine था continues reference to बुख़ार, and the scale is explicit. Real clinical interpretation belongs to a qualified professional; this line only models reporting a measurement clearly.

Lines 7–8: examination instructions

मैं आपका गला देख लेती हूँ।

maĩ āpkā galā dekh letī hū̃.

Let me take a look at your throat. (female doctor; polite neutral)

Feminine लेती हूँ agrees with the female doctor. The vector लेना presents the small examination as a readily completed step: “I'll just have a look.” It softens the transition from questioning to action. आपका agrees with masculine गला, not with the patient.

मुँह खोलिए और गहरी साँस लीजिए।

mũh kholie aur gahrī sā̃s lījie.

Open your mouth and take a deep breath. (respectful instruction)

Both verbs are respectful imperatives with understood आप. Feminine गहरी agrees with साँस. Hindi uses साँस लेना, literally “take breath,” much as English does; however, the polite imperative is the irregular लीजिए, not a mechanically generated form from the infinitive.

These direct imperatives are appropriate because the actions are routine and immediate. Adding कृपया would make them more formally courteous, but tone and -इए already mark respect.

Lines 9–10: caused examination and an open condition

क्या मुझे कोई जाँच करानी होगी?

kyā mujhe koī jā̃c karānī hogī?

Will I need to have any tests done?

मुझे marks the person under necessity. Causative करानी means arrange/have someone perform the test, not personally “do” the laboratory procedure. Feminine करानी होगी agrees with जाँच. English uses have a test done; Hindi builds that delegated agency into the causative.

अभी नहीं। यह दवा खाने के बाद लीजिए और पानी पीते रहिए।

abhī nahīṃ. yah davā khāne ke bād lījie aur pānī pīte rahie.

Not at present. Take this medicine after eating and keep drinking water. (respectful)

अभी नहीं is a fragment whose missing proposition is “no test is needed at present.” खाने के बाद uses oblique infinitive खाने before के बाद; context supplies “after eating food.” पीते रहिए combines habitual participle with रहना to instruct continued or repeated drinking, not one single sip.

अगर साँस लेने में दिक्कत हो या बुख़ार बढ़े, तो तुरंत डॉक्टर से संपर्क कीजिए।

agar sā̃s lene meṃ dikkat ho yā buxār baṛhe, to turant ḍokṭar se sampark kījie.

If you have difficulty breathing or the fever rises, contact a doctor immediately. (respectful safety instruction)

The open condition uses subjunctive हो and बढ़े because these are possible future developments, not asserted facts. Correlative तो introduces the consequence. डॉक्टर से संपर्क करना uses से for the professional contacted; तुरंत gives urgency.

💡
In an अगर…तो… safety instruction, present-looking subjunctives such as हो, बढ़े keep the condition open. The respectful imperative in the result clause tells the listener what to do if it becomes real.

Common Mistakes

Using के पास for an illness

❌ मेरे पास तेज़ बुख़ार है।

Incorrect ordinary health frame — fever is experienced, not possessed as an available object.

✅ मुझे बुख़ार है।

mujhe buxār hai.

I have a fever.

Making the progressive agree with the patient

❌ मुझे खाँसी हो रहा है।

Incorrect — feminine खाँसी controls हो रही है.

✅ मुझे खाँसी हो रही है।

mujhe khā̃sī ho rahī hai.

I am coughing / I have an ongoing cough.

Using a finite verb inside the difficulty frame

❌ मुझे साँस लेता है में दिक्कत है।

Incorrect — the activity must be nominalized with the oblique infinitive लेने before में.

✅ मुझे साँस लेने में दिक्कत है।

mujhe sā̃s lene meṃ dikkat hai.

I have difficulty breathing.

Missing both causative meaning and feminine agreement

❌ मरीज़ को अपनी जाँच करना होगी।

Incorrect — feminine जाँच requires करनी, and ordinary करना would make the patient the examiner rather than the person arranging the test.

✅ मरीज़ को अपनी जाँच करानी होगी।

marīz ko apnī jā̃c karānī hogī.

The patient will need to have an examination done.

Key Takeaways

  • Put the experiencer in को form and locate pain with body part में.
  • Let the symptom control agreement: खाँसी हो रही है, हल्का बुख़ार है.
  • Use an oblique infinitive inside frames such as साँस लेने में दिक्कत.
  • Distinguish doing a test (जाँच करना) from having one performed (जाँच कराना).
  • Open conditions take forms such as अगर…हो/बढ़े, तो….

From dialogue order to neutral prose

The dialogue moves from complaint to follow-up questions, examination, and conditional instruction. Short questions such as खाँसी हो रही है? and बुख़ार नापा था? retain the patient as an unspoken referent. This keeps the consultation focused and avoids repetitious आपको/आपने.

A neutral record makes participants explicit and compresses the polite turn-taking:

marīz ko kal rāt se gale meṃ dard, halkā buxār aur khā̃sī hai, lekin sā̃s lene meṃ dikkat nahīṃ hai. usne subah buxār nāpā thā. ḍokṭar ne uskā galā dekhā aur use davā lene tathā pānī pīte rahne ko kahā. ḍokṭar ne yah bhī kahā ki sā̃s lene meṃ dikkat hone yā buxār baṛhne par turant cikitsakīya sahāyatā lenī cāhie.

The patient has had a sore throat, mild fever, and cough since last night, but has no difficulty breathing. The patient measured the fever in the morning. The doctor examined the patient's throat and told the patient to take medicine and keep drinking water. The doctor also said that if breathing difficulty occurs or the fever rises, medical help should be sought immediately. (neutral clinical prose)

The prose replaces respectful commands with reported instructions and more formal चिकित्सकीय सहायता. The dialogue is better for learning interaction; the prose is better for recording what happened.
