Perso-Arabic and Urdu-associated vocabulary

Perso-Arabic vocabulary reaches modern Hindi through centuries of contact and the shared Hindustani literary and spoken tradition. Words such as सवाल, जवाब, मदद, ज़रूरत, फ़ैसला, and इंतज़ार are ordinary for a vast range of Hindi speakers. Others—इब्तिदा, तवज्जो, दरख़्वास्त, गुफ़्तगू, or Persian-style compounds—can sound more Urdu-associated, literary, ceremonial, or domain-specific. Origin alone therefore cannot tell you a word’s current register.

“Urdu-associated” on this page describes a social and stylistic tendency, not ownership by one religion or exclusion from Hindi. Hindi and Urdu share grammar and much everyday vocabulary, while standardized writing traditions make different high-register choices. Speakers move along this continuum according to audience, medium, place, profession, identity, and aesthetic purpose.

One message across the continuum

Consider a request to postpone a meeting because several people cannot attend:

कई लोग आ नहीं पाएँगे, इसलिए मीटिंग किसी और दिन रख लेते हैं।

kaī log ā nahīṃ pāẽge, islie mīṭiṅg kisī aur din rakh lete haiṃ.

Several people won't be able to come, so let's hold the meeting another day. (conversational)

कई सदस्य उपस्थित नहीं हो सकेंगे, इसलिए बैठक की तारीख़ बदलने का सुझाव है।

kaī sadasya upasthit nahīṃ ho sakeṅge, islie baiṭhak kī tārīx badalne kā sujhāv hai.

Several members will be unable to attend, so the suggestion is to change the meeting date. (neutral written)

अनेक सदस्यों की अनुपस्थिति को देखते हुए बैठक स्थगित करने का प्रस्ताव है।

anek sadasyoṃ kī anupasthiti ko dekhte hue baiṭhak sthagit karne kā prastāv hai.

In view of several members' absence, it is proposed that the meeting be postponed. (Sanskritized formal)

कई अहबाब की ग़ैरहाज़िरी के सबब जलसे को मुल्तवी करने की गुज़ारिश है।

kaī ahbāb kī ġairhāzirī ke sabab jalse ko multavī karne kī guzāriś hai.

Because several friends will be absent, there is a request to postpone the gathering. (marked Urdu-associated formal/literary)

The last sentence is intelligible to many educated readers but is not universally casual Hindi. अहबाब, ग़ैरहाज़िरी, सबब, जलसा, मुल्तवी, and गुज़ारिश accumulate a marked profile. One of these words alone may be routine in a community or genre; their density makes the style unmistakable. Conversely, तारीख़ in the neutral sentence is so established that its Perso-Arabic origin does not make the sentence literary.

💡
Classify words by present-day distribution, not by etymology alone. Ask “Who uses this phrase, in which genre, with which collocations?” before assigning a register label.

The widely shared everyday core

Many Perso-Arabic items are basic spoken Hindi and occur with inherited Hindi verbs and postpositions:

अगर कोई सवाल हो तो बेझिझक पूछिए; मैं मदद कर दूँगा।

agar koī savāl ho to bejhijhak pūchie; maĩ madad kar dū̃gā.

If you have any question, please ask without hesitation; I'll help. (neutral, respectful; male speaker)

मुझे अभी जवाब नहीं मिला, इसलिए थोड़ा इंतज़ार करना पड़ेगा।

mujhe abhī javāb nahīṃ milā, islie thoṛā intazār karnā paṛegā.

I haven't received an answer yet, so we'll have to wait a little. (everyday)

Hindi syntax is doing the grammatical work: सवाल पूछना, मदद करना, जवाब मिलना, इंतज़ार करना are conventional predicate patterns. The borrowed noun has gender and selects a light verb like any other Hindi lexical item. A Persian or Arabic source does not make the surrounding grammar “Urdu grammar.”

Collocation must be learned phrase by phrase. Hindi normally says फ़ैसला करना/लेना, ध्यान देना, कोशिश करना, इजाज़त देना/मिलना, and ख़याल रखना.

हमने फ़ैसला किया है कि इस बार घर पर ही रहेंगे।

hamne faislā kiyā hai ki is bār ghar par hī raheṅge.

We have decided that this time we'll stay at home. (neutral)

मेरी ग़ैरमौजूदगी में पौधों का ख़याल रखना।

merī ġairmaujūdgī meṃ paudhoṃ kā xayāl rakhnā.

Take care of the plants while I'm away. (familiar)

The respectful alternative is ख़याल रखिए. Vocabulary stratum never replaces the ordinary Hindi system of address and imperative agreement.

Domain can outweigh conversational frequency

Law and journalism preserve many Perso-Arabic terms: अदालत, गवाह, सबूत, बयान, ज़मानत, गिरफ़्तार, मुक़दमा. They are not informal simply because a Sanskritic counterpart exists.

अदालत ने गवाह का बयान दर्ज किया और अगली सुनवाई की तारीख़ तय की।

adālat ne gavāh kā bayān darj kiyā aur aglī sunvāī kī tārīx tay kī.

The court recorded the witness's statement and set the date of the next hearing. (standard legal/news)

This is highly conventional public-register Hindi. Sanskritized replacements such as न्यायालय, साक्षी, and तिथि are also possible, but word-by-word substitution may alter legal nuance or institutional convention. Register operates at the level of domain-specific phrases.

Administrative communication likewise mixes strata naturally:

आपकी दरख़्वास्त मिल गई है; अंतिम निर्णय अगले सप्ताह बताया जाएगा।

āpkī darxvāst mil gaī hai; antim nirṇay agle saptāh batāyā jāegā.

Your application has been received; the final decision will be communicated next week. (formal, Urdu-leaning noun in mixed official Hindi)

दरख़्वास्त may feel marked or old-fashioned in some Hindi institutions, where आवेदन is standard, but routine in other speakers’ repertoire. अंतिम निर्णय is Sanskritic. This combination can be coherent because office usage and speaker history, not an etymological border, shape it.

Literary density and Persian constructions

Urdu-associated vocabulary supplies major resources for lyric, film dialogue, criticism, and literary prose: ख़ामोशी, तन्हाई, एहसास, ख़्वाब, आरज़ू, मोहब्बत. These words can also appear in conversation; literary force arises from selection, metaphor, and density.

उसकी ख़ामोशी में ऐसा दर्द था जिसे कोई सवाल छू नहीं सकता था।

uskī xāmośī meṃ aisā dard thā jise koī savāl chū nahīṃ saktā thā.

There was a pain in her silence that no question could touch. (literary)

Persian इज़ाफ़त links nouns and modifiers in marked Urdu-associated expressions, often written with a hyphen in Devanagari: ग़म-ए-दिल “sorrow of the heart,” हालात-ए-हाज़िरा “current circumstances.” The linking vowel -e- is not an ordinary productive replacement for Hindi का/के/की.

शायर ने ग़म-ए-दिल को शहर की वीरानी से जोड़ दिया।

śāyar ne ġam-e-dil ko śahar kī vīrānī se joṛ diyā.

The poet connected the sorrow of the heart with the city's desolation. (literary/Urdu-associated)

In neutral Hindi, say दिल का ग़म. The izafat phrase evokes a literary tradition and may function almost like a quotation from that register. It also does not change ordinary clause syntax: the full phrase takes को, and the perfective transitive subject takes ने.

💡
Use izafat as an established literary construction, not as decoration between arbitrary Hindi nouns. Neutral possession remains का/के/की.

Nukta, pronunciation, and variation

Careful standard spelling distinguishes क़ q, ख़ x, ग़ ġ, ज़ z, and फ़ f in words such as क़ानून, ख़बर, ग़लत, ज़रूरत, and फ़ैसला. Many speakers merge some of these sounds with क, ख, ग, ज, or फ, and informal typing often omits the dot. That variation does not make the words incorrect Hindi.

यह ख़बर ग़लत निकली, लेकिन तब तक काफ़ी लोग उसे साझा कर चुके थे।

yah xabar ġalat niklī, lekin tab tak kāfī log use sājhā kar cuke the.

The news turned out to be false, but by then many people had already shared it. (neutral)

In edited Devanagari, preserve conventional nuktas. In speech, do not treat a speaker’s common merger as a moral or communal test. Careful pronunciation may itself be a style choice. The nukta pronunciation guide maps the variation in detail.

Address, stance, and identity

Urdu-associated formulas can increase courtesy or ceremony, but they do not replace pronoun and verb agreement:

जनाब, आप तशरीफ़ रखिए; मैं अभी चाय भिजवाता हूँ।

janāb, āp taśrīf rakhie; maĩ abhī cāy bhijvātā hū̃.

Sir, please have a seat; I'll have tea sent right away. (ceremonious/Urdu-associated; male speaker)

जनाब and तशरीफ़ रखिए are marked courteous choices. आप still requires respectful imperative रखिए. In an ordinary office, आप बैठिए may be warmer and less theatrical. Among friends, the marked version can be playful.

Labels must remain non-categorical. A speaker may choose मोहब्बत for emotional resonance, इजाज़त as the most ordinary family word, and न्यायालय in professional writing. That repertoire does not mechanically reveal religion, politics, or competence.

Common Mistakes

Calling shared words “not Hindi”

❌ हिंदी में सवाल और जवाब की जगह केवल प्रश्न और उत्तर कहना चाहिए।

Incorrect—सवाल and जवाब are established ordinary Hindi; the Sanskritic pair belongs to different collocations and registers.

✅ परीक्षा में पाँच प्रश्न हैं; कोई सवाल हो तो पूछिए।

parīkṣā meṃ pā̃c praśn haiṃ; koī savāl ho to pūchie.

The exam has five questions; if you have a question, please ask. (natural domain contrast)

Presenting a marked Urdu cluster as universally casual

❌ ‘अहबाब की ग़ैरहाज़िरी के सबब जलसा मुल्तवी है’ हर हिंदीभाषी की रोज़मर्रा की बोली है।

Incorrect claim—the quoted sentence is markedly Urdu-associated or formal for many speakers, not universally casual Hindi.

✅ कई दोस्तों के न आने की वजह से बैठक टाल दी गई है।

kaī dostoṃ ke na āne kī vajah se baiṭhak ṭāl dī gaī hai.

The meeting has been postponed because several friends cannot come. (broadly accessible neutral Hindi)

Translating “take a decision” with the wrong event structure

❌ फ़ैसला हमें ले गया।

Incorrect for ‘we made a decision’—the decision has become the subject that took us somewhere.

✅ हमने फ़ैसला लिया।

hamne faislā liyā.

We made a decision.

Using izafat as ordinary Hindi possession

❌ मेरे दोस्त-ए-घर बड़ा है।

Incorrect—this is not an established izafat phrase, and ordinary Hindi possession requires का/के/की.

✅ मेरे दोस्त का घर बड़ा है।

mere dost kā ghar baṛā hai.

My friend's house is large.

Key Takeaways

  • Perso-Arabic origin does not imply marked Urdu style: much of this vocabulary is everyday Hindi.
  • Density, collocation, genre, community, and individual repertoire determine whether a choice sounds neutral or marked.
  • Borrowed nouns participate fully in Hindi gender, postposition, light-verb, aspect, and agreement patterns.
  • Legal, journalistic, and administrative domains contain conventional Perso-Arabic vocabulary at formal levels.
  • Literary izafat and ceremonial formulas are valuable marked resources, not universal substitutes for ordinary Hindi syntax.
