क्या object and thing questions

Pronominal क्या asks “what?” about a thing, an action, an event, or the content of an idea. It can be a direct object in तुमने क्या खरीदा?, an unknown subject-like participant in क्या गिरा?, or a predicate identity in यह क्या है? Before a postposition, it normally changes to oblique किस, just like person-question कौन does.

Because clause-initial क्या also marks yes-no questions, word order and the kind of answer sought matter. Hindi usually keeps an argument क्या in the focused position inside the clause rather than moving it obligatorily to the front.

क्या as a direct object

An unspecified nonhuman direct object normally appears without को, so interrogative क्या stands directly before the verb.

तुम नाश्ते में क्या खाओगे?

tum nāśte meṃ kyā khāoge?

What will you eat for breakfast? (familiar)

रिया बाज़ार से क्या लाई?

riyā bāzār se kyā lāī?

What did Riya bring from the market?

आप अभी क्या पढ़ रहे हैं?

āp abhī kyā paṛh rahe haiṃ?

What are you reading right now? (respectful)

The natural answer supplies an object: पराठे, कुछ फल, or एक उपन्यास. A mere हाँ does not answer the question. Keeping क्या near the verb marks it as the unknown focused constituent.

In a perfective transitive clause, bare क्या has no overt gender and number features. The verb therefore commonly appears in masculine singular default form:

सोनल ने मेले से क्या खरीदा?

sonal ne mele se kyā kharīdā?

What did Sonal buy at the fair?

Once the question names an expected noun, that noun can control agreement: सोनल ने कौन-सी चादर खरीदी? “Which sheet did Sonal buy?” The broader choice among क्या, कौन-सा, and कैसा is covered on interrogative agreement.

💡
For a neutral “what did X verb?” question, place bare क्या immediately before the verb and use the clause's ordinary Hindi order. Do not import English what + auxiliary + subject order.

Identity, events, and whole propositions

क्या is not limited to portable objects. It can request a category, ask what occurred, or ask for the content of someone's words or plans.

यह आवाज़ क्या है?

yah āvāz kyā hai?

What is this sound?

रास्ते में क्या हुआ?

rāste meṃ kyā huā?

What happened on the way?

तुमने उससे क्या कहा?

tumne usse kyā kahā?

What did you say to her or him? (familiar)

अगला क़दम क्या होगा?

aglā qadam kyā hogā?

What will the next step be?

In यह क्या है?, यह is the topic and क्या asks for its identity. English begins with what; Hindi naturally begins with the known item. In क्या हुआ?, by contrast, initial क्या is itself the unknown participant or event. The appropriate answer—“the power went out,” not yes or no—shows that it is not a polar marker.

Polar क्या versus object क्या

Compare the marker before a complete clause with an object inside it:

क्या कविता ने रात का खाना बनाया?

kyā kavitā ne rāt kā khānā banāyā?

Did Kavita make dinner?

कविता ने रात के खाने में क्या बनाया?

kavitā ne rāt ke khāne meṃ kyā banāyā?

What did Kavita make for dinner?

After initial क्या, the first clause already contains its object रात का खाना and expects confirmation. In the second, क्या occupies the unknown object slot. This is why moving object क्या to the beginning can produce ambiguity: the clause-edge position is already associated with the yes-no marker.

क्या आपने दस्तावेज़ भेज दिए? — नहीं, अभी नहीं।

kyā āpne dastāvez bhej die? — nahīṃ, abhī nahīṃ.

Did you send the documents? — No, not yet. (respectful)

आपने कौन-से दस्तावेज़ भेजे? — सिर्फ़ पहचान-पत्र।

āpne kaun-se dastāvez bheje? — sirf pahcān-patra.

Which documents did you send? — Only the identity document. (respectful)

The second question uses कौन-से, not broad क्या, because it chooses members from an understood class of documents.

With postpositions: किस, not क्या

Direct क्या changes to oblique किस when a postposition expresses instrument, source, container, topic, or another relation.

तुमने रस्सी किससे काटी?

tumne rassī kisse kāṭī?

What did you cut the rope with? (familiar)

यह तेल किस चीज़ का है?

yah tel kis cīz kā hai?

What is this oil made from?

यह निशान किस चीज़ से बना है?

yah niśān kis cīz se banā hai?

What is this mark made from?

आप किस विषय पर लिख रहे हैं?

āp kis viṣay par likh rahe haiṃ?

What topic are you writing about? (respectful)

Bare किससे is structurally ambiguous between “with what,” “from what,” and “from whom.” Adding a noun such as किस चीज़ से or किस व्यक्ति से makes the intended domain explicit when context does not.

With a highly specific, contrastive object, Hindi can use an overt noun phrase plus को, such as किस चीज़ को पहले हटाएँ? “Which thing should we remove first?” Bare क्या को is not the neutral standard form. Often कौन-सी चीज़ is more idiomatic when choosing among visible items.

💡
Before a postposition, think “oblique interrogative stem”: किससे, किसमें, किसपर, किसके बारे में. If human versus nonhuman is unclear, add व्यक्ति or चीज़.

क्या-क्या: an open list

Reduplicated क्या-क्या asks “what all?” or “what kinds of things?” It invites a list rather than one answer and is common in conversation.

नई नौकरी में तुम्हें क्या-क्या सीखना पड़ा?

naī naukrī meṃ tumheṃ kyā-kyā sīkhnā paṛā?

What all did you have to learn in the new job? (familiar)

पिकनिक के लिए क्या-क्या चाहिए?

piknik ke lie kyā-kyā cāhie?

What all do we need for the picnic?

This is one reduplicated interrogative, not two yes-no markers. It often conveys that the speaker expects several items or categories.

Presupposition, echo, and surprise

An ordinary क्या question may presuppose that some relevant thing or event exists. तुमने क्या तय किया? assumes that a decision was probably made; a polar question can check that assumption first.

तुमने आखिर क्या तय किया?

tumne ākhir kyā tay kiyā?

So what did you finally decide? (familiar)

क्या तुमने कोई फ़ैसला किया?

kyā tumne koī faislā kiyā?

Did you make any decision? (familiar)

Echo questions repeat क्या with strong prominence when something was unheard or seems absurd:

मैंने पुराना सोफ़ा बेच दिया। — तुमने क्या बेच दिया?

maĩne purānā sofā bec diyā. — tumne kyā bec diyā?

I sold the old sofa. — You sold what? (surprised echo)

This marked echo can carry disbelief; it is not necessarily a request for neutral new information.

Formal and informal exchanges

कृपया बताइए, इस शुल्क में क्या शामिल है? — नाश्ता और कर दोनों शामिल हैं।

kripyā batāie, is śulk meṃ kyā śāmil hai? — nāśtā aur kar donoṃ śāmil haiṃ.

Please tell me, what is included in this fee? — Breakfast and tax are both included. (formal, respectful)

तू क्या ढूँढ़ रहा है? — मेरी नीली टोपी।

tū kyā ḍhū̃ṛh rahā hai? — merī nīlī ṭopī.

What are you looking for? — My blue cap. (intimate, male addressee)

The interrogative grammar remains the same across registers. Respectful बताइए and आप suit formal interaction; intimate तू is appropriate only where the relationship permits it.

Common Mistakes

❌ क्या तुमने कल खरीदा?

Wrong for neutral ‘What did you buy yesterday?’—initial क्या is liable to be read as a polar marker.

✅ तुमने कल क्या खरीदा?

tumne kal kyā kharīdā?

What did you buy yesterday? (familiar)

❌ आपने डिब्बा क्या से खोला?

Incorrect—क्या changes to oblique किस before से.

✅ आपने डिब्बा किससे खोला?

āpne ḍibbā kisse kholā?

What did you open the box with? (respectful)

किया आपने क्या?

kiyā āpne kyā?

You did what? (heavily marked echo or corrective order)

✅ आपने क्या किया?

āpne kyā kiyā?

What did you do? (neutral respectful question)

❌ यह क्या को कहते हैं?

Incorrect—bare क्या does not take को in this naming frame.

✅ इसे क्या कहते हैं?

ise kyā kahte haiṃ?

What is this called?

Key Takeaways

  • Pronominal क्या can ask about a thing, event, action, identity, or propositional content.
  • As a neutral direct object, it normally remains bare and stands in the focused position before the verb.
  • Clause-initial polar क्या precedes a complete proposition and expects yes or no; object क्या fills a missing grammatical role.
  • Before postpositions, use oblique किस, often with चीज़ or another noun when the intended domain needs clarification.
  • Reduplicated क्या-क्या means “what all,” while कौन-सा chooses a member from an understood set.
