Hindi greetings are chosen less mechanically by clock time than English good morning, good afternoon, and good evening. नमस्ते namaste works at many times of day, while नमस्कार namaskār, प्रणाम praṇām, राम-राम rām-rām, and आदाब ādāb locate the encounter in different relationships, regions, communities, or degrees of formality. The greeting is only the opening: pronoun choice, agreement, जी, intonation, and the follow-up question complete its social meaning.
If the names, titles, and pronouns after the greeting are new, review introductions and respectful address alongside this page.
नमस्ते is the broad neutral greeting
नमस्ते is widely usable when meeting or taking leave (neutral/respectful). It is suitable for unfamiliar adults, teachers, colleagues, neighbors, and many ordinary service encounters. It does not itself specify morning or evening.
namaste, āp kaise haiṃ?
Hello, how are you? (respectful, to a man or mixed group)
namaste, āp kaisī haiṃ?
Hello, how are you? (respectful, to one woman)
The greeting stays fixed, but कैसे/कैसी tracks the addressee's gender and हैं keeps respectful agreement. A warm falling-rise on कैसे हैं? can sound genuinely interested; a quick, level delivery may function as a routine acknowledgment.
Between established friends, a greeting may be lighter or omitted because the relationship is already active.
are, tum kab āe? sab ṭhīk?
Hey, when did you get here? Everything okay? (informal/familiar)
Hindi often builds warmth through the follow-up rather than through a specialized word equivalent to English hi. अरे here is an attention-and-recognition particle (informal), not an insult.
Formal and relationship-specific alternatives
नमस्कार is somewhat more formal or public-facing than नमस्ते in many contexts. It is common in announcements, presentations, broadcasting, and polite service language, though individual and regional habits overlap.
namaskār, āj ke kāryakram meṃ āp sabhī kā svāgat hai.
Greetings, and welcome to today's program. (formal/public)
प्रणाम marks deference, especially toward elders, respected teachers, or religious figures (respectful/traditional). It is not the neutral greeting for every stranger.
praṇām, dādī jī. āpkī tabīyat ab kaisī hai?
My respects, Grandma. How is your health now? (respectful family address)
राम-राम is a familiar regional greeting across parts of North and Northwest India (regional: North/Northwest India). Its social reach varies: it can be warm and everyday in one community but noticeably regional in another.
rām-rām, tāū jī. khet kā kām kaisā cal rahā hai?
Ram-Ram, uncle. How is the farm work going? (regional: North/Northwest India; respectful kin address)
आदाब is associated with Urdu-speaking cultural etiquette and is used across religious identities (polite/cultural; region and community vary). अस्सलामु अलैकुम is a Muslim greeting with the conventional reply वअलैकुम अस्सलाम (religious/community-specific); use it when the community and relationship license it, not as a costume-like substitute for knowing the listener.
ādāb, farāh sāhibā. āp kab pahũcīṃ?
Greetings, Ms. Farah. When did you arrive? (polite Urdu-influenced register)
Time-of-day formulas exist, but are not compulsory
सुप्रभात “good morning” is understood and used (formal/written/institutional)—for example in school assemblies, public messages, and carefully formal openings. It is much less necessary in everyday conversation than English good morning. शुभ संध्या “good evening” is also formal or presentational; शुभ रात्रि is primarily a late-night leave-taking or a wish before sleep, not the usual greeting when arriving somewhere at night.
suprabhāt, vidyārthiyo. āj ham ek naī kavitā paṛheṅge.
Good morning, students. Today we will read a new poem. (formal/institutional)
acchā, śubh rātri. kal subah bāt karte haiṃ.
All right, good night. We'll talk tomorrow morning. (leave-taking)
An English speaker may search for a clock-matched formula and produce stiff Hindi. In an ordinary evening visit, नमस्ते plus a relationship-appropriate question is often more natural than शुभ संध्या.
A full formal exchange
risepśanisṭ: namaskār, āp kisse milnā cāheṅge? — āgantuk: namaste. mujhe ḍokṭar mehrā se milnā hai; maĩne das baje kā samay liyā hai.
Receptionist: Good morning/hello, whom would you like to meet? — Visitor: Hello. I am here to see Dr. Mehra; my appointment is at ten. (formal service encounter, male visitor)
The receptionist's plural-honorific आप... चाहेंगे maintains respectful distance. The visitor need not repeat आप because the second sentence describes his own appointment. Politeness is distributed across greeting, honorific agreement, indirect चाहेंगे, and calm intonation—not carried by a single “please.”
A familiar exchange and an intonation change
nehā: are, ā gaī! kaisī hai? — siyā: baṛhiyā. tū batā, kaisī cal rahī hai zindagī?
Neha: Hey, you're here! How are you? — Siya: Great. You tell me—how's life? (intimate female friends)
Here तू is licensed by an established intimate relationship. A lively rise on आ गई! expresses pleased recognition. With a sharp fall and tense voice, the same words could sound like “So, you finally showed up.” Context and intonation change the force without changing the proposition.
Repairing an overformal greeting
Grammatically interpretable but comically distant for an ordinary close friend.
mitra se: are, kaise ho? bahut dinoṃ bād!
To a friend: Hey, how are you? It's been ages! (informal/familiar)
The repair changes much more than a greeting: महोदय, official सूचित करें, and आप... हैं give way to familiar कैसे हो and an elliptical expression of pleasure. Softer or warmer wording comes from a coherent relationship package.
Common Mistakes
Translating “good evening” automatically
Needlessly ceremonial for an ordinary chat with a familiar neighbor.
namaste, kaise haiṃ āp?
Hello, how are you? (respectful and natural with a neighbor)
Using शुभ रात्रि on arrival
Miscalibrated—शुभ रात्रि normally closes a late-night interaction or wishes someone good night; it is not the usual arrival greeting.
pārṭī meṃ pahũckar: namaste! der to nahīṃ huī?
On arriving at the party: Hello! I'm not late, am I?
Greeting an elder but dropping respectful agreement
Incoherent in the intended respectful relationship: प्रणाम clashes with intimate तू...
praṇām, dādājī. āp kaise haiṃ?
My respects, Grandpa. How are you?
