Hindi register is a coordinated social package. A learner may know that महोदय mahoday is highly formal and तू tū is intimate, yet combine them because English you does not force the relationship to appear in grammar. The result can be structurally interpretable but socially incoherent: one word ceremonially elevates the addressee while the pronoun, verb, or particle abruptly claims intimacy.
This page repairs accidental mixtures. Deliberate switching for irony, quotation, anger, or negotiated intimacy is real, but it requires an intelligible discourse motive; the broader system belongs on social shifts and deliberate pronoun switching.
The error is mismatch, not mere informality
❌ माननीय महोदय, तू यहाँ हस्ताक्षर कर।
Socially incoherent in an ordinary official interaction: highly formal माननीय महोदय clashes with intimate तू and bare कर.
✅ माननीय महोदय, कृपया यहाँ हस्ताक्षर कीजिए।
mānanīya mahoday, kripyā yahā̃ hastākṣar kījie.
Honourable Sir, please sign here. (highly formal/official)
The intended act is a respectful official request. The first version begins in formal institutional language but ends with grammar used toward an intimate singular addressee. A listener may infer mockery, a sudden assertion of superiority, a quotation, or simply learner interference. The repair aligns title, request formula, and honorific imperative.
The reverse mismatch is also possible:
❌ अरे यार, आप कृपया अविलंब प्रस्थान कीजिए।
Unmotivated register collision: intimate अरे यार clashes with bureaucratic अविलंब प्रस्थान कीजिए.
✅ अरे यार, अब चलो न।
are yār, ab calo na.
Come on, let's go now. (informal, familiar)
Nothing is inherently wrong with अविलंब प्रस्थान कीजिए “please depart without delay” (formal/official). It is wrong for this intended friendly nudge. Hindi listeners use the whole utterance—not one politeness word—to infer relationship and stance.
Three coherent packages
These are prototypes, not rigid scripts. Region, age, family practice, profession, and individual preference all matter.
| Frame | Typical resources | Natural setting |
|---|---|---|
| intimate | तू, तुझे, तेरा, है, bare imperative; affectionate or confrontational particles | licensed intimate relationship, devotional style, or deliberate confrontation |
tū fikr mat kar, maĩ hū̃ na.
Don't worry; I'm here for you. (intimate, reassuring)
तुम ज़रा दरवाज़ा बंद कर दोगे?
tum zarā darvāzā band kar doge?
Could you close the door? (informal/familiar, to a man)
क्या आप कृपया दरवाज़ा बंद कर देंगे?
kyā āp kripyā darvāzā band kar deṅge?
Could you please close the door? (respectful)
The propositional content is similar, but the relationship is encoded in तू/तुम/आप, the verb, the request design, and the particles. Hindi politeness is distributed; inserting कृपया into an intimate command does not automatically make the sentence respectful.
Lexical register must fit the interaction
Sanskritic administrative vocabulary is useful (formal/official), but in a casual exchange it may sound comic, stiff, or distancing.
आपसे अनुरोध है कि निर्धारित समय पर उपस्थित हों।
āpse anurodh hai ki nirdhārit samay par upasthit hoṃ.
You are requested to be present at the scheduled time. (formal/official notice)
कल समय पर आ जाना, ठीक है?
kal samay par ā jānā, ṭhīk hai?
Come on time tomorrow, okay? (informal/familiar)
The first nominalizes the request and suppresses a personal requester, creating institutional distance. The second uses a conversational infinitival directive plus ठीक है?, inviting acknowledgment. Neither is universally “more correct”; each fits a different setting.
Perso-Arabic or English-origin words are not automatically informal, and Sanskritic words are not automatically respectful. दरख़्वास्त can be formal, फ़ॉर्म can be neutral, and समय is everyday as well as formal. Register belongs to constructions and practices, not to a simple vocabulary-origin scale.
Agreement exposes accidental switching
If you move from तुम to आप, change the full agreement package.
❌ सर, आप बैठो; मैं तुम्हारे लिए चाय लाता हूँ।
Mismatched in neutral respectful speech: सर and आप conflict with तुम-level बैठो and तुम्हारे.
✅ सर, आप बैठिए; मैं आपके लिए चाय लाता हूँ।
sar, āp baiṭhie; maĩ āpke lie cāy lātā hū̃.
Sir, please sit; I'll bring tea for you. (respectful, male speaker)
A title cannot cancel familiar grammar. The repair changes बैठो → बैठिए and तुम्हारे → आपके. In some communities, conventional आप हो patterns occur (regional/informal: varies), but learners should not generalize them to careful Standard Hindi or treat arbitrary mixtures as dialect.
The near-exception: deliberate contrast and quoted voices
Hindi speakers do mix registers for artistic and interpersonal effects. A friend may imitate a bureaucratic notice for humor; a public speaker may quote an intimate family voice; a sudden आप between usual तुम users can create cool distance.
वाह, महोदय अब पधार रहे हैं! हम कब से आपका इंतज़ार कर रहे थे।
vāh, mahoday ab padhār rahe haiṃ! ham kab se āpkā intazār kar rahe the.
Ah, His Lordship has finally arrived! We've been waiting for you forever. (informal, mock-formal among friends)
Here the exaggerated title महोदय and elevated पधारना are intentionally theatrical. Shared context makes the irony recoverable. Without that context, the same words could be genuine respectful language. A learner should not use “native speakers mix registers” as permission for accidental disagreement; deliberate mixing is meaningful precisely because coherent registers exist in the background.
A repaired dialogue
कर्मचारी: आदरणीय सर, तू यह आवेदन भर। — आवेदक: माफ़ कीजिए? — कर्मचारी: क्षमा कीजिए, सर। कृपया आप यह आवेदन भर दीजिए।
karmacārī: ādaraṇīya sar, tū yah āvedan bhar. — āvedak: māf kījie? — karmacārī: kṣamā kījie, sar. kripyā āp yah āvedan bhar dījie.
Employee: Respected sir, fill in this application. — Applicant: Excuse me? — Employee: My apologies, sir. Please fill in this application. (The first turn mixes highly formal address with intimate grammar.)
The applicant's माफ़ कीजिए? with questioning intonation requests clarification and signals that the turn was unexpected. The repair restores आप, respectful भर दीजिए, and a matching apology. Intonation helps manage the rupture, but morphology completes the social correction.
Common Mistakes
Adding जी while retaining intimate grammar
❌ डॉक्टर जी, तू मेरी रिपोर्ट देख।
Mismatched—जी and professional title do not neutralize intimate तू... देख.
✅ डॉक्टर साहब, आप मेरी रिपोर्ट देखिए।
ḍokṭar sāhab, āp merī riporṭ dekhie.
Doctor, please look at my report. (respectful)
Combining आप with familiar possessives and auxiliaries
❌ मैडम, आप तुम्हारा बैग भूल गई हो।
Mixed package—तुम्हारा and हो belong with तुम, not careful-standard आप.
✅ मैडम, आप अपना बैग भूल गई हैं।
maiḍam, āp apnā baig bhūl gaī haiṃ.
Ma'am, you have forgotten your bag. (respectful, to a woman)
Using official prose with a close friend's ordinary request
❌ कृपया मुझे जलपान उपलब्ध कराने का कष्ट करें, यार।
Unmotivated collision—official deferential phrasing clashes comically with familiar यार.
✅ यार, मेरे लिए भी चाय बना देना।
yār, mere lie bhī cāy banā denā.
Hey, make tea for me too. (informal/familiar)
Overcorrecting all intimacy into formality
❌ पाँच साल के बच्चे से: महोदय, कृपया आप अपना खिलौना उठाइए।
Socially overformal for an ordinary caregiver–child exchange; it sounds comic or performative.
✅ बेटा, अपना खिलौना उठा लो।
beṭā, apnā khilaunā uṭhā lo.
Sweetheart, pick up your toy. (informal/familiar caregiver speech)
Quick self-check
Mark every clue to relationship: title, pronoun, object form, possessive, auxiliary, command, request formula, and particle. If the clues point to different frames, ask whether the clash intentionally conveys irony, quotation, anger, or a negotiated switch. If not, repair every dependent form—not just the pronoun—so the utterance sounds like one speaker addressing one person in one setting.
Key Takeaways

- A formal title plus intimate agreement can imply mockery, aggression, hierarchy, or learner error.
- आप requires its full respectful package in careful Standard Hindi.
- Deliberate mixing is possible because context gives the clash a recoverable purpose.
