Quantifier float and noun-phrase position

Hindi quantifiers do not all occupy one interchangeable slot. सब/सभी, दोनों, and totalizing numeral forms such as तीनों can follow a pronoun or appear in a marked position associated with an already identifiable noun phrase: हम सब, वे दोनों, बच्चे सब. By contrast, existential कुछ/कई and distributive हर normally remain before their noun.

The basic collective contrast is developed under सब and सभी “all”. Here the focus is syntactic position: when a totalizer stays inside its noun phrase and when it can appear later in the clause.

“Quantifier float” is a useful description when a totalizer is separated from the noun phrase it semantically quantifies. It is not a license to move any English all, each, some, or every anywhere in a Hindi clause.

Default noun-phrase positions

Quantifier typeNeutral positionExample
totalbefore plural nounसभी छात्र
existential subsetbefore plural nounकुछ छात्र
distributivebefore singular nounहर छात्र
totalizer with pronounafter pronounहम सब, वे दोनों
demonstrative + totalizer + nounafter demonstrativeये सभी छात्र, वे दोनों कमरे

सभी छात्र समय पर पहुँच गए।

sabhī chātr samay par pahũc gae.

All the students arrived on time.

कुछ छात्र अभी रास्ते में हैं।

kuch chātr abhī rāste meṃ haiṃ.

Some students are still on the way.

The first quantifies the whole relevant set; the second introduces an indefinite subset. Moving कुछ after छात्र does not produce a neutral alternative.

Pronoun plus totalizer

With personal and demonstrative pronouns, a following totalizer is ordinary noun-phrase structure, not necessarily long-distance float.

हम सब रात का खाना बाहर खाएँगे।

ham sab rāt kā khānā bāhar khāẽge.

We will all eat dinner out.

वे दोनों अगले सप्ताह लौटेंगे।

ve donoṃ agle saptāh lauṭeṅge.

Both of them will return next week.

ये तीनों फ़ाइलें आज भेजनी हैं।

ye tīnoṃ fāileṃ āj bhejnī haiṃ.

All three of these files must be sent today.

In हम सब, सब specifies the full group denoted by हम. In वे दोनों, दोनों selects both members of an identifiable pair. In ये तीनों फ़ाइलें, demonstrative ये identifies the set and तीनों exhausts its three members.

💡
After a pronoun, sab/donoṃ/tīnoṃ answers “how much of that already identified group?” It does not introduce an indefinite group.

Marked float with an overt noun

Totalizers can follow an overt topical noun for emphasis or contrast.

बच्चे सब सो गए, लेकिन बड़े अभी जाग रहे हैं।

bacce sab so gae, lekin baṛe abhī jāg rahe haiṃ.

The children have all gone to sleep, but the adults are still awake.

ये किताबें मैंने सब पढ़ी हैं, पर नोट्स केवल दो पर बनाए हैं।

ye kitābeṃ maĩne sab paṛhī haiṃ, par noṭs keval do par banāe haiṃ.

I have read all these books, but I made notes on only two.

The preposed noun phrase is identifiable and topical; the later सब/सभी exhausts it. This order is more marked than सब बच्चे सो गए or मैंने ये सभी किताबें पढ़ी हैं. It is motivated by information structure, not free permutation.

The second example also shows object agreement: किताबें is unmarked, so feminine plural पढ़ी हैं agrees with it despite intervening मैंने and सब.

Which quantifiers resist float?

हर requires a following singular nominal expression: हर बच्चा, not neutral बच्चा हर. कुछ and कई introduce nonspecific subsets and normally stay before the noun: कुछ लोग, कई दिन. Postnominal placement can arise in poetry, correction, or afterthought, but it is not the productive learner pattern.

हर कर्मचारी को पहचानपत्र मिला।

har karmacārī ko pahcānpatr milā.

Every employee received an identity card.

कई लोगों ने समय बदलने को कहा।

kaī logoṃ ne samay badalne ko kahā.

Several people asked to change the time.

Neither कर्मचारी हर nor लोग कई is the neutral equivalent.

Postpositions keep the quantified phrase together

Case markers and postpositions normally follow the whole quantified expression.

DirectPostpositional
हम सबहम सबके लिए
वे दोनोंउन दोनों से
सभी छात्रसभी छात्रों को
ये तीनों फ़ाइलेंइन तीनों फ़ाइलों में

हम सबके लिए एक ही टैक्सी काफ़ी है।

ham sabke lie ek hī ṭaiksī kāfī hai.

One taxi is enough for all of us.

मैंने उन दोनों से अलग-अलग बात की।

maĩne un donoṃ se alag-alag bāt kī.

I spoke with both of them separately.

Oblique उन appears before दोनों से. Floating दोनों outside this case-marked constituent would obscure who से belongs with.

Definiteness and position

Compare an indefinite subset with an exhaustive claim about an identifiable group.

कुछ खिलाड़ी अभ्यास के बाद रुके।

kuch khilāṛī abhyās ke bād ruke.

Some players stayed after practice. (indefinite subset)

वे खिलाड़ी सब अभ्यास के बाद रुके।

ve khilāṛī sab abhyās ke bād ruke.

Those players all stayed after practice. (definite group, exhaustive reading)

The demonstrative makes the players identifiable; floated सब says the predicate holds of the complete group. No article is needed. Hindi combines demonstratives, context, and word order to create this contrast.

Numbers and scope

दो छात्रों ने सभी सवाल पूछे।

do chātroṃ ne sabhī savāl pūche.

Two students asked all the questions.

सभी छात्रों ने दो सवाल पूछे।

sabhī chātroṃ ne do savāl pūche.

All the students asked two questions. (possibly two per student)

The same quantifiers occupy different noun phrases, changing scope. The second permits different pairs of questions for different students; वही दो सवाल would force one shared pair. Hindi requires no classifier between दो and छात्र/सवाल.

Float and negation

मेहमान सब नहीं आए; दो ने आने से मना कर दिया।

mehmān sab nahīṃ āe; do ne āne se manā kar diyā.

Not all the guests came; two declined to come.

Here the topical मेहमान is definite from context, and सब नहीं has the “not all” reading. For “none of the guests came,” use कोई मेहमान नहीं आया or एक भी मेहमान नहीं आया.

💡
Position alone does not resolve every scope ambiguity. In careful writing, add ek bhī, vahī, kul, or an explicit continuation when “none,” “the same,” or “in total” matters.

Common Mistakes

1. Floating हर after its noun

❌ कर्मचारी हर समय पर आया।

Incorrect as neutral Hindi: distributive हर belongs before its singular noun.

✅ हर कर्मचारी समय पर आया।

har karmacārī samay par āyā.

Every employee arrived on time.

2. Using postnominal कुछ for an indefinite subset

❌ छात्र कुछ बाहर इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं।

Incorrect as the neutral indefinite reading: कुछ normally precedes छात्र.

✅ कुछ छात्र बाहर इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं।

kuch chātr bāhar intazār kar rahe haiṃ.

Some students are waiting outside.

3. Splitting a postposition from its quantified complement

❌ हमारे लिए सब एक कमरा काफ़ी है।

Incorrect for ‘one room is enough for all of us’: keep हम सबके लिए together.

✅ हम सबके लिए एक कमरा काफ़ी है।

ham sabke lie ek kamrā kāfī hai.

One room is enough for all of us.

4. Losing plural agreement after a floated totalizer

❌ वे खिलाड़ी सब तैयार था।

Incorrect: the subject is plural, so the predicate must be तैयार थे.

✅ वे खिलाड़ी सब तैयार थे।

ve khilāṛī sab taiyār the.

Those players were all ready.

Key Takeaways

  • Prenominal position is neutral for सभी, कुछ, कई, and हर.
  • Totalizers naturally follow pronouns: हम सब, वे दोनों, ये तीनों.
  • Marked noun + सब/सभी is possible with an identifiable topical set; हर, कुछ, and कई do not float productively in neutral prose.
  • Postpositions follow the complete quantified phrase, and ordinary agreement rules remain in force.
