दोनों and all-of-number forms

Hindi distinguishes a bare count from an exhaustive numbered set. दो बच्चे do bacce means “two children,” without saying that these are all the relevant children. दोनों बच्चे donoṃ bacce means “both children”: the conversation already supplies a set of two, and the sentence includes every member. The same pattern gives तीनों tīnoṃ “all three,” चारों cāroṃ “all four,” and many other all-of-number forms.

Counting versus exhausting a set

The ordinary cardinal answers “how many?” The form in -ओं -oṃ answers “which portion of that numbered set?”—namely, all of it.

Plain countExhaustive formContrast
दो लोग do logदोनों लोग donoṃ logtwo people / both people
तीन चाबियाँ tīn cābiyā̃तीनों चाबियाँ tīnoṃ cābiyā̃three keys / all three keys
चार रास्ते cār rāsteचारों रास्ते cāroṃ rāstefour routes / all four routes

दो मेहमान जल्दी चले गए।

do mehmān jaldī cale gae.

Two guests left early.

दोनों मेहमान जल्दी चले गए।

donoṃ mehmān jaldī cale gae.

Both guests left early.

The second sentence presupposes that the relevant set contains two guests. This is definiteness without an article: English uses “both” or “all three,” while Hindi packages the numeral and exhaustive meaning together.

तीनों चाबियाँ इसी दराज़ में थीं।

tīnoṃ cābiyā̃ isī darāz meṃ thīṃ.

All three keys were in this very drawer.

💡
Do not translate तीनों as merely “three.” Its -ओं signals exhaustivity: no member of the contextually known three is left out.

How the forms are built

For many familiar cardinal numbers, Hindi adds an ending pronounced -oṃ: तीन → तीनों, चार → चारों, पाँच → पाँचों, सात → सातों, दस → दसों. दोनों is the established form for “both”; दोओं is not standard Hindi. Learners should acquire the common forms as whole words because spelling and stem shape are not completely predictable from a mechanical formula.

These forms are ordinary in both conversation and writing (neutral). With a long or cumbersome number, speakers may prefer सभी + numeral, especially where clarity matters: सभी पच्चीस सदस्य “all twenty-five members.” That is a stylistic choice, not a different truth condition.

चारों रास्ते आज बंद हैं।

cāroṃ rāste āj band haiṃ.

All four routes are closed today.

पाँचों उम्मीदवार समय पर पहुँच गए।

pā̃coṃ ummīdvār samay par pahũc gae.

All five candidates arrived on time.

The noun remains plural. The visible -ओं on दोनों/तीनों should not be mistaken for the noun’s oblique-plural ending. It belongs to the quantifier itself.

Before a noun, with a pronoun, or alone

The exhaustive form can modify a plural noun, follow a personal pronoun, or stand alone when the people or things are recoverable.

हम दोनों ने रास्ते में चाय पी।

ham donoṃ ne rāste meṃ cāy pī.

Both of us had tea on the way.

आप तीनों कल मुझसे मिलिए।

āp tīnoṃ kal mujhse milie.

All three of you, please meet me tomorrow. (respectful)

दोनों को संदेश भेज दिया है।

donoṃ ko sandeś bhej diyā hai.

I have sent the message to both of them.

When it stands alone, a postposition follows directly: दोनों को, तीनों से, चारों के लिए. Before a noun plus postposition, the noun shows its normal oblique form: दोनों बच्चों को, not because दोनों changes, but because बच्चों is governed by को. See plural marking with numerals and quantifiers for the wider noun pattern.

दोनों बच्चों को खिड़की वाली सीट चाहिए।

donoṃ baccoṃ ko khiṛkī vālī sīṭ cāhie.

Both children want a window seat.

Agreement follows the whole set

Because these expressions refer to multiple members, a predicate normally shows plural agreement when agreement is available. Gender follows the members: an all-female group takes feminine plural agreement.

दोनों बहनें तैयार हो गईं।

donoṃ bahneṃ taiyār ho gaīṃ.

Both sisters got ready.

तीनों लड़के बाहर बैठे हैं।

tīnoṃ laṛke bāhar baiṭhe haiṃ.

All three boys are sitting outside.

With the respectful singular आप, plural agreement is already required; आप दोनों simply specifies that two respected addressees are included.

Exhaustivity, distribution, and scope

An all-of-number form includes each member, but it does not by itself say whether another participant is shared. दोनों छात्रों ने एक किताब पढ़ी can describe one shared book or one book per student, depending on context. Hindi makes the intended scope explicit with एक ही “the same one” or एक-एक “one each.”

दोनों छात्रों ने एक ही किताब पढ़ी।

donoṃ chātroṃ ne ek hī kitāb paṛhī.

Both students read the same book.

दोनों छात्रों ने एक-एक किताब पढ़ी।

donoṃ chātroṃ ne ek-ek kitāb paṛhī.

Both students read one book each.

💡
दोनों makes the subject set exhaustive; एक-एक distributes an object across that set. They answer different scope questions and can therefore occur together.

Compare सभी “all.” दोनों is more informative when the set has exactly two members; तीनों specifies three, and so on. सभी लोग includes the entire relevant group but does not encode its size.

Common Mistakes

❌ दोओं दोस्त आ गए।

Incorrect—the established word for ‘both’ is दोनों, not a mechanically formed दोओं.

✅ दोनों दोस्त आ गए।

donoṃ dost ā gae.

Both friends have arrived.

❌ दोनों बच्चा सो रहा है।

Incorrect—दोनों denotes a plural set, so the noun and predicate cannot remain singular.

✅ दोनों बच्चे सो रहे हैं।

donoṃ bacce so rahe haiṃ.

Both children are sleeping.

❌ तीनों लड़की तैयार हैं।

Incorrect—the noun after ‘all three’ must be plural.

✅ तीनों लड़कियाँ तैयार हैं।

tīnoṃ laṛkiyā̃ taiyār haiṃ.

All three girls are ready.

❌ दोनों बच्चों आया।

Incorrect—without a postposition, बच्चों is wrongly oblique, and the verb is wrongly singular.

✅ दोनों बच्चे आए।

donoṃ bacce āe.

Both children came.

Key Takeaways

  • A plain numeral counts; दोनों/तीनों/चारों exhaust a contextually known numbered set.
  • दोनों is lexical: do not form दोओं.
  • The expression may modify a noun, follow a pronoun, or stand alone before a postposition.
  • Plural agreement follows the members, while एक ही and एक-एक clarify shared versus distributive scope.
