English see and look encourage learners to search for one visual-perception verb. Hindi instead makes viewpoint visible in the grammar. देखना starts from an animate perceiver who sees, watches, examines, or deliberately looks at something. दिखना starts from the person or thing that is visible, comes into view, or has a certain appearance. Compare मैंने पहाड़ देखा “I saw the mountain” with मुझे पहाड़ दिखा “The mountain came into view for me.”
The complete paradigm of देखना belongs on the देखना reference page. Here the goal is to choose the frame. दिखना is not the passive of देखना, and it is not दिखाना “show.”
The core contrast
| Choice | Viewpoint | Core syntax | Typical questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| देखना | the perceiver's activity or experience | perceiver + object + देखना; perfective perceiver takes ने | Who looked? What did they see or watch? |
| दिखना | the figure's visibility or appearance | figure + दिखना; optional experiencer takes को | What was visible? How did it appear? To whom? |
दूरबीन से मैंने चाँद देखा।
dūrbīn se maĩne cā̃d dekhā.
I saw the moon through binoculars.
बादल हटे तो मुझे चाँद दिखा।
bādal haṭe to mujhe cā̃d dikhā.
When the clouds cleared, the moon became visible to me.
The first sentence selects the observer and an instrument. The second selects चाँद as the figure that enters the observer's visual field. Neither English translation by itself predicts the Hindi verb; the syntactic perspective does.
A compact decision tree
- Is someone deliberately looking, watching, checking, examining, or reading something visually? Choose देखना.
- Are you reporting what a perceiver saw as an event, even without deliberate attention? Choose देखना when the perceiver remains the subject: मैंने एक रोशनी देखी.
- Did something become visible, remain visible, or fail to be visible to someone? Choose दिखना; mark the experiencer with को when expressed.
- Does the sentence mean “look/seem + adjective”? Choose दिखना: वह थकी दिख रही है.
- Does one person cause another person to see something—“show”? Choose दिखाना, a third verb, not either member of this contrast.
This procedure uses syntax, aspect, and discourse focus. Animacy helps because a deliberate perceiver is normally animate, but the visible figure may be animate or inanimate.
देखना: a perceiver acts or experiences
देखना is transitive. In an ordinary imperfective clause, the perceiver is an unmarked subject. In a canonical perfective clause, that perceiver takes ने. A particular human object normally takes को, while an ordinary inanimate object is often unmarked.
रीना हर शाम समाचार देखती है।
rīnā har śām samācār dekhtī hai.
Reena watches the news every evening.
क्या तुमने मेरी चाबी देखी?
kyā tumne merī cābī dekhī?
Have you seen my key? (familiar)
मैंने राहुल को स्टेशन पर देखा।
maĩne rāhul ko sṭeśan par dekhā.
I saw Rahul at the station.
In the key question, unmarked feminine चाबी controls perfective देखी. In the Rahul sentence, को marks a particular human and blocks object agreement, so देखा is default masculine singular. This is ordinary transitive syntax, not a special quirk of perception.
देखना can be deliberate—watching a film, checking a bill—or merely experiential—catching sight of a bird. What stays constant is the subject-centered framing: the clause tells us what the perceiver did or experienced.
दिखना: a figure is visible
दिखना is intransitive. The visible figure is its grammatical subject and controls agreement; the experiencer, if named, takes को. There is no ergative ने because the clause does not present the experiencer as a transitive agent.
क्या मेरी चाबी कहीं दिख रही है?
kyā merī cābī kahī̃ dikh rahī hai?
Can you see my key anywhere? Literally: Is my key visible anywhere?
भीड़ में मुझे रीना नहीं दिखी।
bhīṛ meṃ mujhe rīnā nahīṃ dikhī.
I didn't see Reena in the crowd. Literally: Reena wasn't visible to me.
धुँध में सामने की इमारतें मुश्किल से दिख रही थीं।
dhũdh meṃ sāmne kī imārateṃ muśkil se dikh rahī thīṃ.
The buildings ahead were barely visible in the fog.
Feminine चाबी, रीना, and plural इमारतें control दिख रही, दिखी, and दिख रही थीं. The dative experiencer मुझे does not. The experiencer can be omitted when it is generic or obvious: यहाँ से नदी दिखती है means “The river is visible from here.”
The extended expression दिखाई देना also means “be visible” and follows the same broad experiencer logic: मुझे कुछ दिखाई नहीं दे रहा “I can't see anything.” It is often slightly more explicit than simple दिखना, but both are neutral in modern speech.
Minimal pairs: the same scene, a different center
मैंने स्क्रीन पर एक नंबर देखा।
maĩne skrīn par ek nambar dekhā.
I saw a number on the screen.
मुझे स्क्रीन पर एक नंबर दिखा।
mujhe skrīn par ek nambar dikhā.
A number appeared/became visible to me on the screen.
Both may describe the same perception. देखा makes the speaker the perceiver and can answer तुमने क्या देखा? “What did you see?” दिखा makes the number the figure and naturally answers स्क्रीन पर क्या दिखा? “What appeared on the screen?” The second can suggest sudden emergence or discovery, but that implication comes from perfective aspect and context, not from a rigid lexical rule.
मैंने खिड़की से समुद्र देखा।
maĩne khiṛkī se samudra dekhā.
I looked at/saw the sea from the window.
खिड़की से समुद्र साफ़ दिखता है।
khiṛkī se samudra sāf dikhtā hai.
The sea is clearly visible from the window.
The habitual दिखता है describes a stable visual property of the location. The perfective देखा reports a person's viewing event.
दिखना for appearance
With an adjective or manner expression, दिखना means “look” or “appear.” It describes the impression the subject gives, not an act of looking.
तुम आज थके हुए दिख रहे हो।
tum āj thake hue dikh rahe ho.
You look tired today. (familiar, male addressee)
नई रोशनी में कमरा बड़ा दिखता है।
naī rośnī meṃ kamrā baṛā dikhtā hai.
The room looks bigger in the new lighting.
This appearance reading can be based on visual evidence and is therefore more specifically visual than लगना, which can express a broader impression. तुम नाराज़ लग रहे हो may arise from tone or behavior; तुम नाराज़ दिख रहे हो foregrounds outward appearance.
Register is neutral in all these core uses. Formal writing may prefer more explicit expressions such as दृष्टिगोचर होना “be visible” (formal/literary), but that is not a conversational replacement for दिखना.
A dialogue where the wrong choice changes tone
अ: आप मुझे बार-बार क्यों देख रहे हैं? ब: माफ़ कीजिए, आपकी स्क्रीन पर मेरा नाम दिख रहा था।
a: āp mujhe bār-bār kyoṃ dekh rahe haiṃ? ba: māf kījie, āpkī skrīn par merā nām dikh rahā thā.
A: Why do you keep looking at me? B: Sorry, my name was showing on your screen. (respectful)
In the first turn, देख रहे हैं assigns intentional visual attention to the addressee and can sound accusatory. आप मुझे क्यों दिख रहे हैं? would instead ask, oddly, “Why are you visible to me?” In the reply, मेरा नाम दिख रहा था makes the name the visible figure. मैं आपका नाम देख रहा था would be grammatical, but it would more directly admit deliberate looking. Viewpoint therefore changes interpersonal tone even when the physical scene is unchanged.
Common Mistakes
Giving दिखना a nominative experiencer
❌ मैं दूर से मंदिर दिखा।
Incorrect for ‘I saw the temple from far away’ — दिखना makes the temple the visible figure and marks the experiencer with को.
✅ मुझे दूर से मंदिर दिखा।
mujhe dūr se mandir dikhā.
I could see the temple from far away.
Adding ने to an intransitive visibility clause
❌ मैंने भीड़ में रीना दिखी।
Incorrect — the intended दिखना clause has dative मुझे, not ergative मैंने.
✅ मुझे भीड़ में रीना दिखी।
mujhe bhīṛ meṃ rīnā dikhī.
I spotted/could see Reena in the crowd.
Making दिखना agree with the experiencer
❌ मुझे दोनों इमारतें दिखा।
Incorrect — plural feminine इमारतें control agreement.
✅ मुझे दोनों इमारतें दिखीं।
mujhe donoṃ imārateṃ dikhīṃ.
I could see both buildings.
Confusing “be visible” with “show”
❌ कृपया मुझे नक्शा दिखिए।
Incorrect for ‘show me the map’ — दिखना means be visible; the causative is दिखाना.
✅ कृपया मुझे नक्शा दिखाइए।
kripyā mujhe nakśā dikhāie.
Please show me the map. (respectful)
Diagnostic checklist
- Is an animate participant looking, watching, checking, or reporting what they saw? Use देखना.
- Is a person or thing visible, coming into view, or presenting an appearance? Use दिखना.
- In the perfective, does the perceiver take ने and the object follow transitive agreement? That confirms देखना.
- Does the experiencer take को while the visible figure controls agreement? That confirms दिखना.
- Does English look mean “direct your eyes,” “appear,” or “show”? Choose देखना, दिखना, or दिखाना accordingly.
The durable distinction is perspectival: देखना builds the visual event around a perceiver, while दिखना builds it around what the scene makes visually available.
Key Takeaways
- देखना is transitive and centers the perceiver; its canonical perfective subject takes ने.
- दिखना is intransitive and centers the visible figure; an expressed experiencer takes को.
- With English “look,” distinguish directing one's eyes (देखना) from having an appearance (दिखना) and showing something (दिखाना).
