TAM stacking limits and impossible combinations

Hindi predicates can contain several verbal pieces, but they are not strings of freely stackable “tenses.” In लिख दिया गया होगा, the lexical event लिख- is viewed through a resultative vector दिया, passive गया, and future or inferential auxiliary होगा. Each layer has a distinct scope and a licensed position. Reordering the pieces or combining incompatible viewpoints produces either a different lexical analysis or no Standard Hindi predicate at all.

The useful model is hierarchical: build the event closest to the lexical stem, add a compatible viewpoint or voice layer, and close the predicate with at most one finite tense–mood auxiliary. The general architecture is introduced under aspect, tense, and mood in Hindi; this page tests its limits.

A layered predicate is not a bag of auxiliaries

A common schematic order is:

LayerPossible materialContribution
lexical eventलिख-, पढ़-, पहुँच-event type and arguments
vector / phase / modalदेना, लेना, चुकना, सकनाresult, affectedness, phase, ability
voice or viewpointजाना passive; habitual, progressive, perfective morphologyalignment and internal view
finite auxiliaryहै, था, होगा, होreference time, mood, or inference

Not every item can fill every slot, and some elements simultaneously realize more than one function. रहा in the progressive is a grammaticalized aspectual element; रहता in another context may be the lexical verb “reside.” Analysis must follow meaning, not merely word shape.

मीरा रिपोर्ट लिख रही है।

mīrā riporṭ likh rahī hai.

Meera is writing the report.

मीरा रिपोर्ट लिख चुकी है।

mīrā riporṭ likh cukī hai.

Meera has finished writing the report.

मीरा ने रिपोर्ट लिख दी है।

mīrā ne riporṭ likh dī hai.

Meera has gone ahead and written the report.

All three predicates end in present है, yet they do not mean the same “present tense.” Progressive लिख रही, completive लिख चुकी, and perfective vector compound लिख दी determine the viewpoint that है locates relative to now.

💡
Parse from the inside out. Identify the lexical event and its aspectual or voice layer before assigning any English tense name to है, था, or होगा.

One event cannot be both internally ongoing and already complete at the same layer

Progressive and completive चुकना impose incompatible viewpoints on one occurrence. One opens the event's interior; the other says its relevant endpoint has been reached.

आर्या अभी लेख पढ़ रही है।

āryā abhī lekh paṛh rahī hai.

Arya is reading the article now.

आर्या लेख पढ़ चुकी है।

āryā lekh paṛh cukī hai.

Arya has finished reading the article.

❌ आर्या लेख पढ़ रही चुकी है।

Incorrect — progressive रही and completive चुकी compete for the same event-viewpoint layer.

✅ आर्या अब लेख पढ़ चुकी है।

āryā ab lekh paṛh cukī hai.

Arya has now finished reading the article.

A discourse can of course mention both phases in separate clauses: वह पढ़ रही थी, लेकिन अब पढ़ चुकी है “she was reading, but has finished now.” What is impossible is compressing the two contradictory viewpoints into one undifferentiated stack.

Some apparent combinations are grammatical because the aspects apply to different events. वह काम करता रहा means “he kept working”: habitual करता characterizes repeated or extended doing, while lexical/aspectual रहा presents continuation. It is not the same structure as progressive कर रहा था.

वह दो घंटे तक सवाल पूछता रहा।

vah do ghaṇṭe tak savāl pūchtā rahā.

He kept asking questions for two hours.

जब मैं पहुँचा, वह एक सवाल पूछ रहा था।

jab maĩ pahũcā, vah ek savāl pūch rahā thā.

When I arrived, he was asking a question.

The first profiles continuation across repeated asking events. The second opens one ongoing event at a past reference point. Surface repetition of related forms does not make the structures interchangeable.

Finite auxiliaries occupy one closing position

In a simple predicate chain, है, था, होगा, and subjunctive हो are alternatives at the finite edge, not cumulative tense beads.

वह घर पर होगा।

vah ghar par hogā.

He will be at home / He is probably at home.

❌ वह घर पर होगा है।

Incorrect — future होगा already closes the finite predicate; present है cannot be added after it.

✅ वह इस समय घर पर होगा।

vah is samay ghar par hogā.

He is probably at home at the moment.

कल तक काम पूरा हो गया होगा।

kal tak kām pūrā ho gayā hogā.

The work will have been completed by tomorrow.

The last example contains several forms of होना/जाना, but only होगा is the finite outer auxiliary. हो गया builds the bounded change “became complete”; होगा locates or infers that completed situation.

Forms such as होता था and हुआ है do not violate the one-finite-edge principle. In होता था, होता is a habitual participle and था is finite; in हुआ है, हुआ is perfective and है is finite.

यहाँ हर सर्दी में मेला लगता था।

yahā̃ har sardī meṃ melā lagtā thā.

A fair used to be held here every winter.

आज कार्यक्रम में बड़ा बदलाव हुआ है।

āj kāryakram meṃ baṛā badlāv huā hai.

A major change has occurred in today's program.

Several layers can combine when each takes the completed output of the layer inside it.

निर्णय लिख दिया गया है।

nirṇay likh diyā gayā hai.

The decision has been written down.

निर्णय शाम तक लिख दिया गया होगा।

nirṇay śām tak likh diyā gayā hogā.

The decision will probably have been written down by evening.

The structure is roughly [write + resultative देना] + passive जाना + finite होना. The passive scopes over the resultative event; the future/inferential auxiliary scopes over the passive proposition. Reversing vector and passive order is not a stylistic option.

Ability can scope over a lexical event, and a higher TAM layer can locate the ability:

कविता अब बिना सहारे चल सकती है।

kavitā ab binā sahāre cal saktī hai.

Kavita can now walk without support.

कविता तब बिना सहारे चल सकती थी।

kavitā tab binā sahāre cal saktī thī.

Kavita could walk without support then.

Here सकती carries habitual/modal agreement, while है/थी anchors the ability. This is not “present plus past”; each form has its own layer.

Order matters with phase, vector, and passive morphology

The bare lexical stem normally precedes a vector: लिख दिया, not लिखा दिया for the vector meaning “wrote it down.” The latter surface string may receive a causative analysis—“had [someone] write”—because लिखा- can belong to लिखाना. An apparent TAM error can therefore be a different predicate rather than meaningless noise.

संपादक ने टिप्पणी हटवा दी।

sampādak ne ṭippaṇī haṭvā dī.

The editor had the comment removed.

The causative stem हटवा- precedes vector दी. Causation is inside the resultative viewpoint. Compare a passive:

विवादित टिप्पणी हटा दी गई।

vivādit ṭippaṇī haṭā dī gaī.

The controversial comment was removed.

Feminine टिप्पणी controls हटा दी गई. The resultative vector precedes passive गई. A stack such as हटा गई दी has no corresponding scope order in Standard Hindi.

💡
A longer predicate is grammatical only when you can explain what each successive layer takes scope over. More verbal pieces do not create a “more perfect” or “more polite” tense.

Agreement is distributed across the licensed layers

In progressive clauses, the progressive participle usually agrees with the unmarked subject. In active transitive perfectives, ने marks the agent and an unmarked object can control perfective material. A higher auxiliary normally follows that controller.

समीरा फ़ाइलें जाँच रही होगी।

samīrā fāileṃ jā̃c rahī hogī.

Sameera is probably checking the files.

समीरा ने फ़ाइलें जाँच ली होंगी।

samīrā ne fāileṃ jā̃c lī hoṅgī.

Sameera will probably have checked the files.

This minimal pair keeps the participant and task constant. Progressive रही होगी agrees with unmarked feminine Sameera and conjectures about an open activity. Perfective ने appears in the completed compound; unmarked feminine plural फ़ाइलें controls ली होंगी. Future होगी/होंगी cannot be interpreted without the inner viewpoint and agreement controller.

If the object is marked, default masculine singular appears:

समीरा ने दोनों सहायकों को बुला लिया होगा।

samīrā ne donoṃ sahāyakoṃ ko bulā liyā hogā.

Sameera has probably called both assistants over.

The plural object cannot control agreement through को; neither can ergative समीरा ने.

Negation does not license impossible positive stacks

Negation can change which construction is pragmatically favored, but it does not repair an ill-formed order.

वह अभी रिपोर्ट नहीं लिख रही है।

vah abhī riporṭ nahīṃ likh rahī hai.

She is not writing the report right now.

वह रिपोर्ट अभी तक नहीं लिख पाई है।

vah riporṭ abhī tak nahīṃ likh pāī hai.

She has not managed to write the report yet.

The second predicate contains lexical लिख-, achievement/ability पाई, and present है. It does not combine a progressive and perfective; it reports a completed failure-to-achieve relation up to now. Scope must be read semantically, not counted by forms.

A short narrative: changing layers track changing evidence

दोपहर में टीम मसौदा तैयार कर रही थी।

dopahar meṃ ṭīm masaudā taiyār kar rahī thī.

In the afternoon, the team was preparing the draft.

शाम तक टीम ने मसौदा पूरा कर लिया था और उसे समीक्षा के लिए भेज दिया गया था।

śām tak ṭīm ne masaudā pūrā kar liyā thā aur use samīkṣā ke lie bhej diyā gayā thā.

By evening, the team had completed the draft and it had been sent for review.

निदेशक अब तक उसे पढ़ चुके होंगे।

nideśak ab tak use paṛh cuke hoṅge.

The director has probably read it by now. (honorific)

Progressive कर रही थी opens the work as background. Perfective compounds plus था establish completed stages before a later past point. The final completive plus inferential future marks a reasoned present conclusion. No single auxiliary carries this whole sequence; the changing inner layers do the discourse work.

Common Mistakes

❌ ईशा काम कर रही चुकी है।

Incorrect — progressive रही and completive चुकी cannot describe the same occurrence at the same viewpoint layer.

✅ ईशा काम कर चुकी है।

īśā kām kar cukī hai.

Isha has finished the work.

❌ वह शायद घर पर होगा है।

Incorrect — होगा is already the finite closing form.

✅ वह शायद घर पर होगा।

vah śāyad ghar par hogā.

He is probably at home.

❌ रचना ने चिट्ठी लिख दिया गया है।

Incorrect — an active ergative agent cannot remain the subject of this passive stack, and feminine चिट्ठी requires agreement.

✅ चिट्ठी लिख दी गई है।

ciṭṭhī likh dī gaī hai.

The letter has been written.

❌ मीना ने खिड़कियाँ खोल लिया होंगी।

Incorrect — unmarked feminine plural खिड़कियाँ controls the perfective vector and outer auxiliary.

✅ मीना ने खिड़कियाँ खोल ली होंगी।

mīnā ne khiṛkiyā̃ khol lī hoṅgī.

Meena has probably opened the windows.

❌ हम रिपोर्ट भेज दिया लिया है।

Incorrect — दिया and लिया are competing vectors here, not freely stackable markers of extra completion.

✅ हमने रिपोर्ट भेज दी है।

hamne riporṭ bhej dī hai.

We have sent the report.

Key Takeaways

Hindi permits rich TAM predicates because layers have scope, not because every auxiliary may follow every other one. A lexical event can take a compatible vector, phase, modal, voice, or viewpoint layer, and one finite auxiliary closes the chain. Progressive and completive viewpoints cannot occupy the same event layer; competing vectors cannot simply accumulate; and order reflects semantic scope. Agreement and ergativity are calculated inside the licensed structure, so the outer auxiliary inherits a controller rather than supplying an independent English-style tense.
