Hindi uses habitual aspect not only for scheduled repetition but also for a person’s or thing’s disposition: what it characteristically does, can be expected to do, or is good at doing. अदिति रोज़ तैरती है describes a routine; अदिति बहुत अच्छा तैरती है describes a skill. Both use the same imperfective viewpoint because neither sentence selects one bounded swimming event.
One form, two closely related readings
The habitual layer appears as -ता/-ती/-ते, with an auxiliary locating the pattern in time. This page focuses on meaning and distribution; see habitual participle formation for the full formation paradigm.
| Reading | Question answered | Typical cues | Example form |
|---|---|---|---|
| routine | What happens repeatedly?
| disposition | What does this person or thing characteristically do?
| current temporary routine | What is repeatedly happening during this limited period?
ārav kām se lauṭkar roz kutte ko ghumātā hai.
Aarav walks the dog every day after returning from work.
sabā muśkil bāt bhī jaldī samajh letī hai.
Saba grasps even difficult points quickly.
The first sentence contains a clear series of occasions. The second need not describe frequent classroom observations; it attributes a characteristic capacity to Saba. The completive vector in समझ लेती है helps present successful understanding as her usual tendency.
The habitual timeline stays open
Imagine a current reference period with repeated points:
| Viewpoint | Timeline | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| habitual | • · • · • within NOW | a recurring pattern |
| progressive | [ event unfolding ] at NOW | one ongoing event or arrangement |
| perfective | event | before NOW | one bounded occurrence |
The habitual does not assert that an occurrence is under way at speech time. It also does not assert that every possible occurrence reached its endpoint. It presents the pattern as open and characteristic within the relevant period.
dev roz daftar meṭro se jātā hai.
Dev goes to the office by metro every day.
dev āj daftar meṭro se jā rahā hai.
Dev is going to the office by metro today.
dev kal daftar meṭro se gayā.
Dev went to the office by metro yesterday.
This minimal set holds the journey constant. जाता है surveys a series; जा रहा है opens one journey; गया views one trip as a whole. English uses simple present, present progressive, and simple past here, but those labels are translations of the viewpoints, not definitions of the Hindi forms.
Dispositions are not promises of exceptionless behavior
मीना समय पर पहुँचती है can mean that Meena characteristically arrives on time. It does not entail that she has never been late. Habitual statements are normally evaluated against relevant occasions and expectations, which is why a single exception does not automatically contradict them.
Meena generally arrives on time, but today her train was late.
yah baiṭrī ṭhaṇḍ meṃ jaldī baiṭh jātī hai.
This battery tends to run down quickly in the cold.
The second example attributes a tendency to an inanimate subject. बैठ जाती है packages reaching the depleted state as what characteristically happens under cold conditions. A disposition may therefore concern a person, device, material, or recurring situation.
Temporary routines are still habitual
English sometimes favors a progressive for a temporary repeated arrangement: “I’m taking the bus this week.” Hindi can use a progressive if the speaker treats the entire arrangement as an unfolding temporary phase, but a repeated schedule inside a limited period naturally takes the habitual.
is mahīne maĩ somvār aur budhvār ko ghar se kām kartī hū̃.
This month I work from home on Mondays and Wednesdays. (female speaker)
parīkṣā tak ham śām ko pustakālay meṃ paṛhte haiṃ.
Until the exam, we study in the library in the evening.
The boundaries इस महीने and परीक्षा तक limit the pattern. They do not turn its repeated internal events into one progressive event.
Agreement and transitivity
In an ordinary habitual clause, an unmarked subject controls agreement. The construction is imperfective, so an intentional transitive action does not receive perfective ने merely because the agent acts deliberately.
kavitā har yātrā se pahle ṭikaṭ jā̃ctī hai.
Kavita checks the ticket before every journey.
kavitā ne āj subah ṭikaṭ jā̃cā.
Kavita checked the ticket this morning.
The first has feminine subject agreement जाँचती and no ने. The second shifts to a bounded perfective event: the agent takes ने, and masculine टिकट controls जाँचा. Aspect is therefore the organizing choice that activates different alignment patterns; the auxiliary cannot be interpreted separately from the habitual or perfective layer.
Non-nominative experiencer constructions keep their own agreement rules.
use lambī baiṭhakoṃ meṃ aksar sirdard hotā hai.
He/She often gets a headache in long meetings.
Negation and characteristic non-occurrence
A negative habitual denies a routine or disposition, not necessarily every historical occurrence. वह चाय नहीं पीता normally means that drinking tea is not his habit. Stronger कभी ... नहीं excludes relevant occasions more completely.
imarān kām ke daurān cāy nahīṃ pītā, lekin chuṭṭī ke din kabhī-kabhī pī letā hai.
Imran doesn’t drink tea while working, but on days off he occasionally has some.
Present habitual negation often omits the present auxiliary, as in नहीं पीता. A positive neutral clause normally retains it. That asymmetry belongs to negation; it does not mean auxiliaries are generally optional.
A short narrative: background, interruption, result
anu roz dukān band karne se pahle hisāb milātī thī.
Anu used to reconcile the accounts every day before closing the shop.
ek śām vah hisāb milā rahī thī, tabhī kampyūṭar band ho gayā.
One evening she was reconciling the accounts when the computer shut down.
usne rasīdeṃ dobārā joṛīṃ aur galtī ḍhū̃ṛh lī.
She added up the receipts again and found the mistake.
The habitual establishes Anu’s routine. The progressive moves inside one instance, where a perfective event interrupts it. The final perfectives advance the story through completed steps. Switching aspect tells the listener how each clause contributes to the discourse sequence.
Common Mistakes
Incorrect for an established daily routine — the progressive presents an ongoing phase or event.
vah har subah chah baje dauṛtī hai.
She runs at six every morning.
Incorrect — a present habitual does not take perfective
rohan ām taur par jaldī javāb detā hai.
Rohan generally replies quickly.
Incorrect for a stable skill — the progressive would mean she is swimming well on the current occasion.
merī beṭī bahut acchā tairtī hai.
My daughter swims very well.
Misleading for a repeated Tuesday schedule — use the habitual unless the whole arrangement is deliberately framed as an ongoing phase.
in dinoṃ maĩ maṅgalvār ko daftar jātā hū̃.
These days I go to the office on Tuesdays. (male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Habitual aspect covers both repeated routines and characteristic dispositions. Frequency phrases make a routine explicit, while skills and tendencies need none. The pattern can be temporary, allows exceptions, and normally shows subject agreement without ने. Present or past auxiliaries locate the habitual viewpoint in time; they do not create that viewpoint independently. A switch to progressive or perfective changes both the discourse perspective and, in transitive perfectives, the alignment pattern.
