A generic truth describes how a kind, process, institution, or recurring situation characteristically behaves. Hindi normally expresses such verbal generalizations with habitual -ता/-ती/-ते plus a present auxiliary: लोहा गरम होने पर फैलता है “Iron expands when heated.” The habitual does not count literal repetitions; it presents the relation as valid across relevant cases.
Generic is a viewpoint, not a special tense
Generic statements share the habitual viewpoint with personal routines. Their subject is interpreted as a kind or representative instance rather than one identified participant. The present auxiliary places the generalization in the speaker’s current world of knowledge.
लोहा गरम होने पर फैलता है।
lohā garam hone par phailtā hai.
Iron expands when heated.
मधुमक्खियाँ फूलों से रस इकट्ठा करती हैं।
madhumakkhiyā̃ phūloṃ se ras ikaṭṭhā kartī haiṃ.
Bees collect nectar from flowers.
The bare singular लोहा denotes the substance as a kind. Plural मधुमक्खियाँ denotes bees generally. Hindi needs no article corresponding to English a, the, or a zero article; number and context build the generic reading. See bare nouns and generic reference.
Regularity rather than an event happening now
The key contrast is between a cross-situation regularity and one observable episode:
| View | Timeline | Question answered |
|---|---|---|
| generic habitual | case • case • case → rule | What characteristically happens? |
| progressive | [ one process unfolding now ] | What is happening? |
| perfective | one process → endpoint | | What happened as a whole? |
पानी सौ डिग्री सेल्सियस पर उबलता है।
pānī sau ḍigrī selsiyas par ubaltā hai.
Water boils at one hundred degrees Celsius.
पतीले में पानी उबल रहा है।
patīle meṃ pānī ubal rahā hai.
The water in the pot is boiling.
चाय के लिए पानी उबल गया है।
cāy ke lie pānī ubal gayā hai.
The water for tea has come to a boil.
The first is a simplified scientific regularity under ordinary assumed conditions. The second opens one current process. The third presents reaching the boiling point as a bounded change whose result matters now. English tense labels correlate with these translations, but Hindi organizes them around viewpoint first.
Kinds, tendencies, and norms
Not every generic is an exceptionless scientific law. Hindi habituals also express typical properties, social expectations, and institutional procedures. Words such as आम तौर पर, अक्सर, and ज़्यादातर can explicitly weaken a generalization.
नीम का पेड़ कम पानी में भी बढ़ता है।
nīm kā peṛ kam pānī meṃ bhī baṛhtā hai.
A neem tree grows even with little water.
इस दफ़्तर में आवेदन पहले ऑनलाइन जाँचे जाते हैं।
is daftar meṃ āvedan pahle onlāin jā̃ce jāte haiṃ.
In this office, applications are first checked online.
बड़े शहरों में किराया आम तौर पर ज़्यादा होता है।
baṛe śahroṃ meṃ kirāyā ām taur par zyādā hotā hai.
Rent is generally higher in large cities.
The passive habitual जाँचे जाते हैं states a standing procedure without identifying individual agents. होता है in the rent example describes a recurring or characteristic state. A single inexpensive apartment does not refute the qualified generalization.
Conditions delimit the truth
Generic truths often contain a condition that defines the relevant occasions: गरम होने पर, जब ... तब, अगर ... तो, or a locative/time frame. The habitual belongs in the consequence because that consequence characteristically follows whenever the condition is met.
जब धूप निकलती है, तो यह कमरा जल्दी गरम हो जाता है।
jab dhūp nikaltī hai, to yah kamrā jaldī garam ho jātā hai.
When the sun comes out, this room warms up quickly.
अगर पौधे को बहुत ज़्यादा पानी मिले, तो उसकी जड़ें सड़ने लगती हैं।
agar paudhe ko bahut zyādā pānī mile, to uskī jaṛeṃ saṛne lagtī haiṃ.
If a plant gets too much water, its roots begin to rot.
In the second sentence, subjunctive मिले presents a possible instance of the condition; habitual लगती हैं gives the characteristic consequence. Aspect and mood therefore divide the labor within one generic statement.
Agreement and the absence of habitual ने
An unmarked generic subject controls habitual agreement: feminine plural जड़ें ... लगती हैं, masculine singular लोहा ... फैलता है. A transitive generic does not take ने, because habitual aspect is imperfective.
अच्छी मिट्टी नमी रोकती है और हवा को भीतर आने देती है।
acchī miṭṭī namī roktī hai aur havā ko bhītar āne detī hai.
Good soil retains moisture and allows air to enter.
Compare one bounded test:
इस मिट्टी ने कल पूरा पानी रोक लिया।
is miṭṭī ne kal pūrā pānī rok liyā.
This soil retained all the water yesterday.
The generic has feminine subject agreement रोकती. The perfective test marks the agent-like cause with ने; masculine unmarked पानी controls लिया. The aspect choice organizes this alignment difference. A present auxiliary cannot make a perfective into a habitual or a habitual into a bounded event by itself.
States and habitual-looking predicates
Hindi often uses forms that look habitual for stable knowledge, ability, preference, or customary state: जानता है, मानती है, पसंद करता है. These are not ongoing actions merely because English uses the simple present. Their lexical meaning combines naturally with a characteristic, unbounded viewpoint.
अनुभवी चालक इस रास्ते के ख़तरनाक मोड़ पहचानते हैं।
anubhavī cālak is rāste ke xatarnāk moṛ pahcānte haiṃ.
Experienced drivers recognize the dangerous bends on this road.
Forcing such knowledge into a progressive generally changes the interpretation to a developing process or becomes unnatural. The English simple present is a helpful translation in many generics, but it is not a mechanical instruction to choose one Hindi form.
A short narrative: rule, current case, completed result
इस घाटी में सर्दियों की सुबह नदी पर धुंध छाती है।
is ghāṭī meṃ sardiyoṃ kī subah nadī par dhundh chātī hai.
In this valley, mist settles over the river on winter mornings.
आज भी धुंध धीरे-धीरे फैल रही थी, इसलिए नावें किनारे पर रुकी रहीं।
āj bhī dhundh dhīre-dhīre phail rahī thī, islie nāveṃ kināre par rukī rahīṃ.
Today too, the mist was spreading slowly, so the boats remained at the bank.
दस बजे धुंध हट गई और पहली नाव निकल पड़ी।
das baje dhundh haṭ gaī aur pahlī nāv nikal paṛī.
At ten, the mist cleared and the first boat set off.
The generic habitual establishes the seasonal regularity. The progressive selects one manifestation and views it from inside. The perfectives then mark two bounded changes and move the account forward.
Common Mistakes
❌ पानी ठंड में जम रहा है।
Incorrect for a general property; the progressive describes particular water freezing now.
✅ पानी ठंड में जमता है।
pānī ṭhaṇḍ meṃ jamtā hai.
Water freezes in the cold.
❌ तितलियों ने फूलों पर बैठती हैं।
Incorrect — generic habitual aspect does not license perfective ने.
✅ तितलियाँ फूलों पर बैठती हैं।
titliyā̃ phūloṃ par baiṭhtī haiṃ.
Butterflies settle on flowers.
❌ अच्छी मिट्टी नमी रोकता है।
Incorrect agreement — feminine मिट्टी requires रोकती.
✅ अच्छी मिट्टी नमी रोकती है।
acchī miṭṭī namī roktī hai.
Good soil retains moisture.
❌ इस स्कूल में सुबह आठ बजे कक्षाएँ शुरू हो रही हैं।
Incorrect for a standing timetable — the progressive suggests a current launch or temporary phase.
✅ इस स्कूल में कक्षाएँ सुबह आठ बजे शुरू होती हैं।
is skūl meṃ kakṣāeṃ subah āṭh baje śurū hotī haiṃ.
At this school, classes start at eight in the morning.
Key Takeaways
Generic habituals present a property across relevant cases rather than one event at speech time. Bare singular, mass, or plural nouns can denote kinds without articles. Conditions and qualifiers define the domain and strength of the claim. Ordinary generic subjects control habitual agreement, and transitive generics do not take ने. Progressive and perfective forms select individual manifestations, so switching aspect also changes discourse function and sometimes alignment.
