Adjective order in noun phrases

Hindi normally places descriptive adjectives before the noun, but a noun phrase can contain much more than one adjective. A useful neutral template is demonstrative/possessor + quantity + degree phrase + descriptive adjective(s) + classifying modifier + noun: मेरी दो बहुत पुरानी हिंदी किताबें “my two very old Hindi books.” This is a tendency, not a rigid English-style hierarchy; scope, contrast, and lexicalized combinations also shape order.

The essential rule is local: words that form one meaning unit stay together. बहुत पुराना is a degree phrase, सरकारी अस्पताल is a classifying unit, and every declinable adjective still agrees with the head noun.

A practical neutral template

ZoneTypical materialExample
referenceयह, वह, मेरा, उसमेरी
quantityदो, कई, कुछ, सभीदो
degreeबहुत, काफ़ी, सबसे + adjectiveबहुत पुरानी
description/classificationरंग, आकार, उम्र, origin/typeहिंदी
headnounकिताबें

मेरी दो बहुत पुरानी हिंदी किताबें अभी भी घर पर हैं।

merī do bahut purānī hindī kitābeṃ abhī bhī ghar par haiṃ.

My two very old Hindi books are still at home.

वे तीन बड़े नीले डिब्बे रसोई में रख दो।

ve tīn baṛe nīle ḍibbe rasoī meṃ rakh do.

Put those three large blue boxes in the kitchen. (informal)

Both बड़े and नीले agree with masculine plural डिब्बे. The numeral is farther from the noun than the descriptive pair, and the demonstrative introduces the whole phrase.

💡
Build outward from the noun. Keep a classifying unit closest, add descriptive adjectives, attach degree words to the adjective they modify, then place quantity and reference expressions farther left.

Hindi order is not the English adjective ladder

English teaches a conventional sequence such as opinion–size–age–color–origin–material. Hindi has preferences too, but does not simply translate that ladder slot by slot. A modifier that classifies the noun often sits close to it, while evaluation and degree tend to stand farther away.

उन्होंने एक सुंदर पुरानी लकड़ी की मेज़ खरीदी।

unhoṃne ek sundar purānī lakṛī kī mez kharīdī.

They bought a beautiful old wooden table. (respectful/honorific)

लकड़ी की मेज़ identifies the material/type, पुरानी adds age, and सुंदर evaluates the result. Other orders can be grammatical when a speaker contrasts one property, but they need context and a different intonation.

हमें नया सरकारी अस्पताल चाहिए, सिर्फ़ नया रंग-रोगन नहीं।

hameṃ nayā sarkārī aspatāl cāhie, sirf nayā raṅg-rogan nahīṃ.

We need a new government hospital, not merely new paint.

सरकारी अस्पताल is a familiar institutional unit. नया has scope over that unit. Moving सरकारी left of नया can foreground the government-versus-private contrast, but it is not the neutral choice for the meaning above.

Degree words stay next to their adjective

बहुत बड़ा “very large,” काफ़ी पुराना “quite old,” and सबसे सस्ता “cheapest” are constituents. Do not separate the degree word from the adjective with an unrelated modifier or the head noun.

यह एक बहुत छोटा लाल कैमरा है।

yah ek bahut choṭā lāl kaimrā hai.

This is a very small red camera.

मैंने सबसे सस्ती सीधी उड़ान चुनी।

maĩne sabse sastī sīdhī uṛān cunī.

I chose the cheapest direct flight.

Here सबसे belongs specifically with सस्ती. Declinable सीधी agrees separately with feminine उड़ान. Both adjective forms are feminine.

💡
Ask which adjective a degree word measures. Keep those two adjacent: sabse sastī sīdhī uṛān means the direct flight that is cheapest, not necessarily “the most direct” flight.

Every declinable modifier agrees

Stacking adjectives does not make only the nearest one agree.

Head featuresPhrase
masculine singular directछोटा लाल डिब्बा
masculine plural directछोटे लाल डिब्बे
masculine singular obliqueछोटे लाल डिब्बे में
masculine plural obliqueछोटे लाल डिब्बों में
feminineछोटी लाल पेटी / छोटी लाल पेटियों में

छोटा declines; लाल is invariant. Both semantically modify the head in every row.

उन दो पुराने लाल डिब्बों में काग़ज़ रखे हैं।

un do purāne lāl ḍibboṃ meṃ kāġaz rakhe haiṃ.

Papers are kept in those two old red boxes.

The postposition में makes the plural phrase oblique. पुराने agrees as a declinable masculine adjective, लाल remains fixed, and डिब्बों carries the oblique plural noun ending.

Possessive and material phrases

A का/के/की modifier behaves adjectivally and agrees with the following head noun. It may itself contain a noun whose own case is determined internally.

कमरे में लकड़ी की छोटी गोल मेज़ है।

kamre meṃ lakṛī kī choṭī gol mez hai.

There is a small round wooden table in the room.

Feminine मेज़ triggers लकड़ी की and छोटी. Invariant गोल stays fixed. With masculine डिब्बा, the material phrase becomes लकड़ी का डिब्बा.

Conventional combinations and scope

Some adjective–noun pairs behave like established semantic units: छोटा भाई “younger brother,” काली चाय “black tea,” सरकारी स्कूल “government school.” An added modifier normally describes the whole unit.

मेरे बहुत छोटे भाई ने काली चाय मँगाई।

mere bahut choṭe bhāī ne kālī cāy mãgāī.

My much younger brother ordered black tea.

Because छोटा भाई has the conventional “younger brother” reading, बहुत intensifies the age difference, not physical smallness by default. Order and lexical meaning interact.

Attributive order versus predication and focus

नई नीली साड़ी is a neutral noun phrase. साड़ी नई और नीली है is a predicate. A speaker can also move descriptive material after a noun for marked contrast or an afterthought, but that is not the neutral English-like order. See postposed adjectives and marked focus.

Agreement in a ने-clause

The internal order of modifiers does not change their controller.

माया ने दो सुंदर लाल साड़ियाँ चुनीं।

māyā ne do sundar lāl sāṛiyā̃ cunīṃ.

Maya chose two beautiful red saris.

Invariant सुंदर/लाल modify feminine plural साड़ियाँ, and चुनीं agrees with that unmarked object. The ने-marked agent does not control any adjective.

Common Mistakes

❌ यह एक बहुत घर बड़ा है।

Incorrect—बहुत must stay with बड़ा, and the attributive phrase belongs before घर.

✅ यह एक बहुत बड़ा घर है।

yah ek bahut baṛā ghar hai.

This is a very large house.

❌ उन दो पुराना डिब्बों में कपड़े हैं।

Incorrect—the masculine plural oblique phrase requires पुराने.

✅ उन दो पुराने डिब्बों में कपड़े हैं।

un do purāne ḍibboṃ meṃ kapṛe haiṃ.

There are clothes in those two old boxes.

❌ लकड़ी का छोटी मेज़ टूट गई।

Incorrect—both the material phrase and adjective must match feminine मेज़.

✅ लकड़ी की छोटी मेज़ टूट गई।

lakṛī kī choṭī mez ṭūṭ gaī.

The small wooden table broke.

❌ मेरी नए दो किताबें आ गईं।

Incorrect—quantity normally precedes descriptive नई, which must be feminine.

✅ मेरी दो नई किताबें आ गईं।

merī do naī kitābeṃ ā gaīṃ.

My two new books have arrived.

Key Takeaways

  • A useful neutral order is reference + quantity + degree/adjective + classifying modifier + noun.
  • Hindi has ordering preferences, but not a mechanical copy of the English adjective hierarchy.
  • Degree words form a unit with the adjective they modify.
  • Every declinable adjective agrees independently; indeclinable modifiers stay fixed.
  • Postpositions make the entire noun phrase oblique, while का/के/की modifiers agree with the head noun.
