Instrument Nouns: מזגן, מחשב, מקרר

An Israeli flat is full of device names beginning with מ: מחשב, מקרר, מזגן, מדפסת, מדיח. It is natural to assume that the initial letter always means “instrument.” It does not. Hebrew draws its household vocabulary from a tool mishkal, participles, compounds and loans—and in מזגן the מ is part of the root itself. The useful skill is not coining a device name but recognising which history and inflection each familiar item has.

A walk through the flat

In the kitchen you meet מקרר, מדיח כלים, מיקרוגל and perhaps מכונת קפה. The utility corner has מכונת כביסה and מייבש. A desk holds מחשב and מדפסת; the wall has מזגן; a telephone may still connect to a משיבון. Four naming strategies coexist in one small space.

The plural column is deliberately practical. מזלג is masculine but takes מזלגות, while מחשב shifts from makhshév to makhshevím. Construct device names pluralise their head: מדיחי כלים, מכונות כביסה. Radio is most neutrally counted with a classifier—מכשירי רדיו—rather than by forcing a Hebrew plural onto the loan.

שמתי את הירקות במקרר ואת הכלים במדיח.

sámti et hayrakót bamekarér ve'et hakélim bamedíakh

I put the vegetables in the fridge and the dishes in the dishwasher.

המדפסת מחוברת למחשב שבחדר העבודה.

hamadpéset mekhubéret lamakhshév shebekhéder ha'avodá

The printer is connected to the computer in the study.

תדליק את המזגן, נהיה חם בסלון.

tadlík et hamazgán, nihyá kham basalón

Turn on the air conditioner; it's getting hot in the living room. (informal, to a man)

אין לי מייבש שיער, אז יצאתי עם שיער רטוב.

ein li meyabésh se'ár, az yatsáti im se'ár ratóv

I don't have a hair dryer, so I went out with wet hair.

Three מ words, three analyses

The title's three nouns are a compact warning against reading by first letter alone.

WordActual analysisWhy it matters
מַחְשֵׁב makhshévמַקְטֵל from ח־שׁ־בthe initial מ belongs to the instrument pattern
מְקָרֵר mekarérpi'el participle from ק־ר־רthe participle “cooling” became the noun “refrigerator”
מַזְגָן mazgánקַטְלָן from the root מ־ז־גthe מ is the first root consonant; removing it destroys the root

This is more than etymological trivia. The analysis predicts family relationships and prevents false ones. מחשב connects transparently with חישב “calculated”; מקרר with קירר “cooled”; מזגן with מיזג “air-conditioned, blended.” It also protects the pronunciation mekarér: treating מקרר as another מַקְטֵל noun tempts learners into the widespread but nonstandard makrér.

המקרר הישן מקרר טוב, אבל הוא מרעיש בלילה.

hamekarér hayashán mekarér tov, avál hu mar'ísh balayla

The old fridge cools well, but it makes noise at night.

Here the first מקרר is a noun and the second is a participle used verbally. The forms sound identical; the article and sentence position reveal their roles.

💡
Do not strip מ off automatically. First ask whether the word has a known root without it, a live participle behind it, or a compound structure. The initial letter gives you a hypothesis, not an answer.

Pattern, participle, compound or loan?

The מַקְטֵל family is important and genuinely productive, but not an open slot that accepts every root. It gives a strong decoding clue in words such as מחשב, מגהץ and מסרק; the detailed vowel and plural mechanics are on instrument mishkalim.

Participles and participle-based formations name a device by what it does: מקרר, מדיח and מייבש are participles used as device nouns; משיבון adds ־וֹן to the stem משיב. English often does the same with dryer and answering machine, but Hebrew's forms remain tied to different binyanim and cannot be reduced to one suffix.

The מכונת־ route is transparent construct grammar. The second noun specifies the operation: מכונת כביסה, מכונת תפירה. Definiteness appears on the second member—מכונת הכביסה—and the plural changes the head—מכונות כביסה. See frozen compounds for the full syntax.

Loans fill many gaps without behaving alike. טלפון pluralises normally as טלפונים. רדיו remains unchanged after מכשיר. מיקרוגל combines borrowed elements but takes an ordinary Hebrew plural. כספומט is a Hebrew blend built from כסף and אוטומט and also pluralises normally. Observable coexistence is the point; no named coiner is needed to explain it.

קנינו מכונת תפירה ישנה בשוק הפשפשים.

kanínu mekhonát tfirá yeshaná beshúk hapishpeshím

We bought an old sewing machine at the flea market.

יש כספומט ליד הכניסה ומיקרוגל במטבחון.

yesh kaspomát leyád haknisá umikrogál bamitbakhón

There is an ATM by the entrance and a microwave in the kitchenette.

Place versus machine

מכבסה and מכונת כביסה share the word כביסה but refer to different things. A מכבסה is a laundromat or commercial laundry—the place. A מכונת כביסה is the appliance—the instrument.

מכונת הכביסה בבניין משותפת, והמכבסה נמצאת ברחוב הבא.

mekhonát hakvisá babinyán meshutéfet, vehamikhbasá nimtsét barekhóv habá

The washing machine in the building is shared, and the laundromat is on the next street.

💡
English laundry blurs activity, clothes, shop and sometimes equipment. Hebrew asks you to choose: כביסה for the laundry, מכבסה for the business, and מכונת כביסה for the machine.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating every initial מ as the instrument prefix. In מזגן it belongs to the root.

❌ מזגן

a מַקְטֵל noun from a supposed root ז־ג־ן

Incorrect analysis — מזגן belongs to the root מ־ז־ג and the קַטְלָן pattern; its מ cannot be removed.

✅ שני המזגנים במשרד הפסיקו לעבוד באותו יום.

shnei hamazganím bamisrád hifsíku la'avód be'otó yom

Both air conditioners in the office stopped working on the same day.

2. Giving a feminine device masculine agreement. מדפסת and מצלמה are feminine.

❌ המדפסת החדש כבר לא עובד

Incorrect — מדפסת is feminine: המדפסת החדשה כבר לא עובדת.

✅ המצלמה החדשה עובדת מצוין גם בחושך.

hamatslemá hakhadashá ovédet metsuyán gam bakhóshekh

The new camera works very well even in the dark.

3. Pluralising both halves of מכונת כביסה. Only the head noun changes.

❌ החנות מוכרת מכונות כביסות זולות

Incorrect for ‘washing machines’ — the compound plural is מכונות כביסה; כביסה remains singular.

✅ החנות מוכרת מכונות כביסה זולות עם אחריות ארוכה.

hakhanút mokhéret mekhonót kvisá zolót im akhrayút aruká

The shop sells inexpensive washing machines with a long warranty.

4. Using a real Hebrew word as the wrong plural. מחשבות means “thoughts,” not “computers.”

❌ מחשבות

computers

Incorrect meaning — the plural of מחשב is מחשבים. מחשבות is the plural of מחשבה, ‘thought.’

✅ החליפו את כל המחשבים בכיתה לפני תחילת הקורס.

hekhlífu et kol hamakhshevím bakitá lifnéi tkhilát hakúrs

They replaced all the computers in the classroom before the course began.

5. Using the place noun for the appliance. The shared laundry vocabulary does not make the nouns synonyms.

❌ מכבסה בדירה

a washing machine in the flat

Incorrect reading — מכבסה is a laundromat or laundry business. The appliance in a flat is מכונת כביסה.

Key Takeaways

  • Device vocabulary draws on instrument patterns, participles, מכונת־ compounds and loans.
  • מחשב is a true מַקְטֵל formation; מקרר is a pi'el participle; מזגן has root-initial מ.
  • Learn the plural with the noun: מזלגות, מחשבים, מדיחי כלים, מכונות כביסה, מכשירי רדיו.
  • Keep the everyday distinction between מכבסה, the place, and מכונת כביסה, the appliance.
