The suffix ־וּת is one of the fastest routes into the vocabulary of modern Hebrew. It turns a property, social status or identity into a noun: זהיר “careful” becomes זהירות “caution,” ילד “child” becomes ילדות “childhood,” and נגיש “accessible” becomes נגישות “accessibility.” English spreads these meanings across -ness, -ity, -hood, -ship and independent words; Hebrew gathers a striking share of them under one ending.
What can stand before ־וּת?
The suffix attaches to several kinds of base. The resulting word is often transparent, but the base can change vowels, so this is a decoding tool rather than a mechanical spelling rule.
| Base type | Base | ־וּת noun | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
The changes are real: חשוב does not simply receive visible ־ות but reshapes to חשיבות, and בטוח becomes בטיחות. There is no reliable way to predict every vowel from unpointed spelling. Learn frequent pairs together, then use the shared ending to infer a new word's broad meaning.
הזהירות שלו מנעה תאונה ברגע האחרון.
hazehirút sheló man'á te'uná baréga ha'akharón
His caution prevented an accident at the last moment.
רק בבגרות הבנתי כמה הילדות שלי הייתה מיוחדת.
rak babagrút hevánti káma hayaldút shelí haytá meyukhédet
Only in adulthood did I understand how special my childhood had been.
החשיבות של שינה טובה ברורה במיוחד בתקופת מבחנים.
hakhashivút shel sheiná tová brurá bimyukhád bitkufát mivkhaním
The importance of good sleep is especially clear during exam season.
Every derived ־וּת noun is feminine
The gender of the base does not survive. ילד, עבד and מלך are masculine, but ילדות, עבדות, מלכות are feminine nouns. They take feminine adjectives, demonstratives and verbs.
האפשרות הזאת נשמעת סבירה יותר מהקודמת.
ha'efsharút hazót nishmá'at svirá yotér mehakodémet
This option sounds more reasonable than the previous one.
הזמינות הגבוהה של השירות קיצרה את זמן ההמתנה.
hazminút hagvohá shel hasherút kitserá et zman hahamtaná
The service's high availability shortened the waiting time. (professional)
Not every written word ending in ות contains this suffix. שירות “service” is masculine because its ת belongs to the root ש־ר־ת; its plural is שירותים. Such lookalikes do not overturn the rule. The rule concerns nouns actually derived with ־וּת.
The plural: ־וּיוֹת, with one yod in ktiv male
The plural replaces final ־וּת with spoken ־וּיוֹת -uyót. That extra y syllable is obligatory in speech. Ordinary unpointed spelling writes a vav for u, one yod for /y/, and another vav for o: אפשרויות.
| Singular | Plural, pointed in ktiv male | Plural, unpointed | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| אֶפְשָׁרוּת | אֶפְשָׁרוּיּוֹת | אפשרויות | efsharuyót |
| זֶהוּת | זֶהוּיּוֹת | זהויות | zehuyót |
| תַּרְבּוּת | תַּרְבּוּיּוֹת | תרבויות | tarbuyót |
| פְּעִילוּת | פְּעִילוּיּוֹת | פעילויות | pe'iluyót |
The dagesh in pointed יּ marks a strengthened consonant; it does not instruct ktiv male to write two yods here. This differs from adjectival plurals such as מקומיים, where the orthographic structure genuinely produces two yods. The general rules and their environments are compared on double vav and yod.
בדקנו שלוש אפשרויות לפני שבחרנו ספק.
badáknu shalósh efsharuyót lifnéi shebakhárnu sapák
We examined three options before choosing a supplier.
הילדים בכיתה מגיעים מתרבויות שונות.
hayeladím bakitá magi'ím mitarbuyót shonót
The children in the class come from different cultures.
State or quality versus act
Hebrew often contrasts a ־וּת abstraction with a קְטִילָה action noun. The difference is conceptual:
- ־וּת packages a state, quality or disposition: פתיחות “openness,” שבירות “fragility.”
- קְטִילָה packages an event or act: פתיחה “opening,” שבירה “breaking.”
פתיחת התערוכה נדחתה בשבוע בגלל השיפוץ.
ptikhát hata'arukhá nidkhatá beshavúa biglál hashipúts
The exhibition opening was postponed by a week because of the renovation. (event/action)
הפתיחות של הצוות לרעיונות חדשים הפתיעה אותי.
haptikhút shel hatsévet lera'yonót khadashím hifti'á otí
The team's openness to new ideas surprised me. (quality)
English often uses the same -ing or a broad noun for both, so the Hebrew choice forces a sharper distinction. The action-noun patterns themselves are covered on abstract mishkalim.
A productive suffix in policy and technology
Contemporary public and technical writing repeatedly needs nouns for measurable properties. ־וּת supplies them efficiently: נגישות accessibility, זמינות availability, שימושיות usability, קישוריות connectivity. In these contexts the register is often professional, administrative or academic, but the words themselves can pass into everyday conversation.
עדכנו את האתר כדי לשפר את הנגישות בטלפון.
idkénu et ha'atár kedei leshapér et hanegishút batélefon
They updated the site to improve accessibility on phones. (technical/professional)
השימושיות חשובה לנו יותר ממספר התכונות.
hashimushiyút khashuvá lánu yotér mimispár hatkhunót
Usability matters more to us than the number of features. (technical/professional)
Productivity does not mean every imaginable formation is idiomatic. Existing terms still outrank a learner's coinage, and exact stem changes must be checked.
Common Mistakes
1. Giving a ־וּת noun masculine agreement. The derived noun is feminine whatever its base was.
❌ האפשרות החדש נראה טוב
Incorrect — אפשרות is feminine: האפשרות החדשה נראית טוב.
✅ האפשרות החדשה נראית יקרה, אבל היא תחסוך זמן.
ha'efsharút hakhadashá nir'ét yekará, avál hi takhasókh zman
The new option looks expensive, but it will save time.
2. Adding an ordinary plural ending. אפשרות does not become אפשרותים or אפשרותות.
❌ בדקנו כמה אפשרותים
Incorrect — the plural is אפשרויות, pronounced efsharuyót.
✅ נשארו לנו שתי אפשרויות סבירות לסוף השבוע.
nish'arú lánu shtei efsharuyót svirót lesóf hashavúa
We have two reasonable options left for the weekend.
3. Doubling the yod in the ־וּיוֹת plural. The pointed dagesh does not become a second letter in ordinary spelling.
❌ אפשרוייות
Incorrect ktiv male — write אפשרויות with one yod between the two vavs.
✅ כל הפעילויות בוטלו בגלל מזג האוויר.
kol hape'iluyót butlú biglál mézeg ha'avír
All the activities were cancelled because of the weather.
4. Treating the adjective's plural as the abstract noun. חשובות means “important” for feminine plural nouns; חשיבות means “importance.”
❌ חשובות
importance
Incorrect meaning — חשובות is a feminine plural adjective. The abstract noun is חשיבות.
✅ רק אחר כך הבנו את חשיבות ההחלטה.
rak akhár kakh hevánu et khashivút hahakhlatá
Only later did we understand the importance of the decision.
Key Takeaways
- ־וּת derives qualities, states and collectivities from adjectives, nouns and agent bases.
- Every genuinely derived ־וּת noun is feminine, regardless of the base's gender.
- The plural is pronounced -uyót and written with one yod: אפשרויות, זהויות, תרבויות.
- ־וּת usually names a state or quality; קְטִילָה names an act or event.
- Modern policy and technical Hebrew uses the suffix productively, but established stems and vowels still have to be learned.

- Abstract Patterns: קְטִילָה and קַטָּלוּתB2 — קְטִילָה turns a pa'al verb into the name of its action (כְּתִיבָה, נְסִיעָה); ־וּת stacked on an agent noun turns a person into a quality (עַצְלָנוּת). Plus the rule English speakers need most: when Hebrew wants this noun and when it insists on the infinitive.
- Abstract Nouns in ־וּתB1 — ־וּת turns adjectives and nouns into feminine qualities, and it is still taking new members. The hard part is the plural: אֶפְשָׁרוּת becomes אֶפְשָׁרֻיּוֹת with a syllable the spelling אפשרויות hides. The page closes on ־וֹן, Hebrew's other abstract ending, whose plural is ־וֹנוֹת and whose abstract use you learn rather than coin.
- The ־י Suffix and Its CompoundsB1 — See how Hebrew builds relational adjectives with ־ִי, restores hidden stem consonants, and spells the ־ִיִּים and ־ִיּוֹת plurals.
- Regular Plurals: ־ִים and ־וֹתA1 — Hebrew has two plural suffixes — ־ִים for masculine nouns and ־וֹת for feminine ones — and in native vocabulary they normally take the stress. Here is which noun gets which, how a feminine singular pattern gives way to ־וֹת, and why the split is a strong tendency rather than a gender test.
