Hebrew נהנה מ־ “enjoy,” התעלם מ־ “ignore,” and נמנע מ־ “avoid” treat their complement as a source or point of separation, even though English uses a direct object. Other members, such as פחד מ־ “be afraid of” and סבל מ־ “suffer from,” line up neatly with English. Both kinds must be learned as Hebrew verb frames.

nehenénu meha'arukhá, avál hashérut hayá ití me'ód

We enjoyed the meal, but the service was very slow.

hu hit'além meha'azhará vehimshíkh linsóa

He ignored the warning and kept driving.

The reference table

מ־ often presents the complement as what an experience comes from, what someone separates from, or the person from whom something is requested or received. That logic helps organize the list, but it does not replace lexical checking.

💡
Source and separation organize this class: receive from, learn from, recoil from, avoid, be freed from, part from. נהנה מ־ and התעלם מ־ still have to be memorized because English hides that conceptual source completely.

English hides the letter

נהנה describes deriving enjoyment from an experience, person, or thing. With a noun or pronoun, the source of enjoyment remains inside the A following infinitive can instead attach directly—נהניתי לראות אותך “I enjoyed seeing you”—so do not insert מ־ mechanically before every complement type. English “enjoyed it/them” gives learners no preposition to translate.

nehenéti mehasikhá shelánu verashámti le'atsmí káma ra'yonót

I enjoyed our conversation and wrote down a few ideas for myself.

hayeladím nehenú miménu kol akhár hatsahoráyim veló ratsú lalékhet

The children enjoyed it all afternoon and didn't want to leave. (masculine referent)

התעלם likewise requires מ־ before the person, fact, or signal being ignored. With a pronoun, say ממני, ממנו, or ממנה—not אותי, אותו, or אותה.

She saw the messages but ignored me until morning.

English ask merges two different Hebrew constructions. ביקש מ־ presents a person as the source of a requested thing or action. The requested thing may be a definite direct object, while the person remains marked with מ־.

bikáshti mehameltsár et hakheshbón, avál hu shakhákh lehaví otó

I asked the waiter for the bill, but he forgot to bring it. (person with מ־; requested thing with את)

bikáshti miména lishlóakh li et hakóvets hamekorí

I asked her to send me the original file.

שאל את introduces the person who is asked a question: שאלתי את המלצר אם המטבח עדיין פתוח. שאל can also take a direct object naming the question, while ביקש focuses on a request.

sha'álti et hameltsár im efshár lehazmín od kinúakh

I asked the waiter whether we could order another dessert. (question:

The direct-object use ביקש את החשבון “requested the bill” is also correct. What מ־ specifically marks is the person from whom the thing or action is requested.

💡
Build an “ask” sentence from its communicative purpose. A question uses שאל את + person; a request uses ביקש מ־ + person, followed by the thing requested or an infinitive.

The inflected series

Before a pronoun, מ־ develops several different-looking stems. The singulars through “her” begin ממ־; the plurals do not all continue that pattern.

MeaningForm and readingModel
from meמִמֶּנִּי — ממני miméniביקש ממני — asked me
from you (m./f. sg.)מִמְּךָ / מִמֵּךְ — ממך mimkhá / mimékhלמדתי ממך — learned from you

from usמֵאִתָּנוּ — מאיתנו me'itánuביקשו מאיתנו — asked us
from themמֵהֶם / מֵהֶן — מהם / מהן mehém / mehénנפרדנו מהם — parted from them

The doubled consonants in מִמֶּנִּי and מִמֶּנּוּ belong to the form; the target spellings remain ממני and ממנו. The complete modern paradigm and the classical ממנו “from us” collision are on ממני, ממך, ממנו.

hamenahélet bikshá me'itánu lekhakót bakhúts káma dakót

The manager asked us to wait outside for a few minutes.

hitrasámti mehém me'ód, bimyukhád mehadérekh shebá hem patrú et habe'ayá

I was very impressed by them, especially by the way they solved the problem.

Do not over-correct the verbs that match English

פחד מ־ and סבל מ־ already align with “afraid of” and “suffer from.” Learners sometimes replace a correct מ־ after discovering that English prepositions are unreliable. The lesson is to verify the Hebrew frame, not automatically reject every matching English one.

hi mefakhédet mitisót arukót avál lo sovélet mekherdát tisá

She is afraid of long flights but does not suffer from flight anxiety.

Common Mistakes

1. Giving נהנה a direct object. The source of enjoyment takes מ־.

nehenéti mehahofa'á me'ód, bimyukhád mehashír ha'akharón

I really enjoyed the performance, especially the last song.

2. Giving התעלם an object pronoun.

Incorrect—‘ignored him’ is התעלמנו ממנו.

hit'alámnu miménu beméshekh kol hayeshivá, uvasóf hu yatsá bli lomár milá

We ignored him throughout the meeting, and in the end he left without saying a word.

3. Giving the person after ביקש a direct object form. The person requested from takes מ־.

Incorrect—say

bikáshti miménu la'azór li im hamizvadót vehú hiskím miyád

I asked him to help me with the suitcases, and he agreed immediately.

4. Using ביקש מ־ for a simple information question. Choose שאל את for the person being questioned.

Incorrect for asking for information—use

sha'álti et hapkidá éifo hasheirutím vehí her'atá li

I asked the clerk where the restroom was, and she showed me.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn נהנה מ־ with nominal or pronominal source complements, alongside the complete frames התעלם מ־, נמנע מ־, פחד מ־, and סבל מ־; a following infinitive after נהנה can attach directly.
  • ביקש מ־ marks the person asked for something; שאל את marks the person asked a question.
  • Before pronouns, use
  • Source and separation are useful organizing ideas, not a rule that predicts every מ־ verb.
  • A definite מ־complement is not a direct object and never takes את.
