Hebrew השתמש ב־ “use,” נגע ב־ “touch,” and טיפל ב־ “handle/treat” all govern ב־ where English uses a direct object. Many verbs in this family involve contact with something or sustained engagement in it. That image is a useful memory aid, but it is only a tendency; the actual government belongs to each lexical entry.

The four high-impact mismatches
השתמש ב־: “use” is never direct in this sense
The tool or resource appears after ב־. When it is definite, the article merges with the preposition: במחשב means ב + המחשב. No את is added because the noun is the object of ב־, not a direct object.
אפשר להשתמש במטבח, אבל תשאירו אותו נקי.
efshár lehishtamésh bamitbákh, avál tash'íru otó nakí
You may use the kitchen, but leave it clean. (to a group)
נגמר לי המטען, אפשר להשתמש בשלך לרגע?
nigmár li hamat'én, efshár lehishtamésh beshelkhá leréga
My charger died; can I use yours for a moment? (to a man)
טיפל ב־: patient, problem, or matter
טיפל ב־ covers medical treatment and practical handling: a doctor treats a patient; a technician deals with a fault; an employee handles a request. English uses a direct object in all three.
הווטרינר טיפל בכלב ושחרר אותו הביתה באותו ערב.
haveterinár tipél bakélev veshikhrér otó habáyta be'otó érev
The veterinarian treated the dog and sent him home that evening.
אני מטפלת בבקשה שלך ואעדכן אותך עד מחר.
aní metapélet babakashá shelkhá va'adkén otkhá ad makhár
I'm handling your request and will update you by tomorrow. (f. speaker, to a man)
נגע ב־: physical or figurative contact
The contacted thing takes ב־, including suffixed בו/בה. The same frame extends figuratively to touching on a subject or affecting an emotional point.
לא נגעתי בעוגה; היא הייתה ככה כשהגעתי.
lo nagáti ba'ugá, hi haytá kákha kshehigáti
I didn't touch the cake; it was like that when I arrived.
זכה ב־: prize, competition, or right gained
The thing won or the competition in which someone prevailed is introduced by ב־: זכה בפרס, זכה בתחרות. In formal/journalistic Hebrew, the frame also extends to rights or privileges: זכה בהזדמנות “was granted/gained an opportunity.”
הקבוצה זכתה באליפות אחרי משחק צמוד במיוחד.
hakvutsá zakhtá ba'alifút akharéi miskhák tsamúd bimyukhád
The team won the championship after an exceptionally close match.
Inflected ב־ in real sentences
Before a pronoun, ב־ becomes בי, בך, בו, בה, בנו, בכם/בכן, בהם/בהן. Learn the replacement as one movement: השתמשתי במפתח hishtamáshti bemaftéakh → השתמשתי בו hishtamáshti bo.
| With a noun | With a pronoun |
|---|---|
| השתמשתי במחשב | השתמשתי בו — I used it (m.) |
| נגעתי בתמונה | נגעתי בה — I touched it (f.) |
| טיפלו בילדה | טיפלו בה — they treated her |
| תמכנו בעובדים | תמכנו בהם — we supported them |
כבר השתמשתי בו בעבר, והוא הרבה יותר פשוט מהדגם החדש.
kvar hishtamáshti bo be'avár, vehú harbé yotér pashút mehadégem hekhadásh
I've used it before, and it's much simpler than the new model. (masculine referent)
הרופאים טיפלו בה מייד, ועכשיו היא מרגישה טוב יותר.
harof'ím tiplú ba miyád, ve'akhsháv hi margishá tov yotér
The doctors treated her immediately, and now she feels better.
The complete paradigm and the gender contrast בך bekhá/bakh are on ב־ inflected. A full worked paradigm for one verb appears on השתמש.
Government distinguishes meanings
האמין ל־ means “believe what a person says”; האמין ב־ means “believe in / have faith in.” הכיר את דנה means “knew/met Dana,” while הכיר ב־ זכותה means “recognized her right.” The preposition is therefore not decorative: it selects a sense.
האמנתי לו כשהוא הסביר, אבל עדיין לא האמנתי בו כמנהל.
he'emánti lo kshehú hisbír, avál adáyin lo he'emánti bo kimnahél
I believed him when he explained, but I still didn't have faith in him as a manager.
בחר ב־ is the core frame for choosing a candidate, option, or path: בחרתי באפשרות השנייה. Do not teach a free ב/את alternation; transitive uses must be checked sense by sense. Another visual trap is צפה ב־ “watch” versus ציפה ל־ “expect/look forward to”—different verbs, vowels, spelling, and government.
Common Mistakes
1. Giving השתמש a direct object. The instrument or resource always belongs in the ב־frame for “use.”
❌ השתמשנו את המכונה בלי לקרוא את ההוראות
Incorrect—השתמש governs ב־: השתמשנו במכונה.
✅ השתמשנו במכונה בלי לקרוא את ההוראות, וזאת הייתה טעות.
hishtamášnu bamekhoná bli likró et hahora'ót, vezót haytá ta'út
We used the machine without reading the instructions, and that was a mistake.
2. Giving נגע a direct object. Physical contact takes ב־.
❌ אל תיגע את הכפתור האדום
Incorrect—נגע governs ב־: אל תיגע בכפתור האדום.
✅ אל תיגע בכפתור האדום עד שהטכנאי מגיע.
al tigá bakaftór ha'adóm ad shehatékhnai magía
Don't touch the red button until the technician arrives. (to a man)
3. Treating the patient as a direct object of טיפל. A person receiving treatment still takes ב־.
❌ האחות טיפלה אותו בחדר המיון
Incorrect—טיפל governs ב־: האחות טיפלה בו.
✅ האחות טיפלה בו בחדר המיון והסבירה לו מה לעשות בבית.
ha'akhót tiplá bo bakhadár hamiyún vehisbirá lo ma la'asót babáyit
The nurse treated him in the emergency room and explained what to do at home.
4. Marking the prize with את after זכה. The thing won is introduced by ב־.
❌ הסרט זכה את הפרס הגדול
Incorrect—זכה governs ב־: הסרט זכה בפרס הגדול.
✅ הסרט זכה בפרס הגדול, אבל הבמאי לא הגיע לטקס.
haséret zakhá baprás hagadól, avál habamái lo higía latékes
The film won the grand prize, but the director didn't attend the ceremony.
Key Takeaways
- Learn the frame whole: השתמש ב־, טיפל ב־, נגע ב־, זכה ב־, בחר ב־.
- Contact and engagement organize much of the class, but they are a memory aid rather than a productive rule.
- Before a pronoun, inflect ב־: השתמשתי בו, נגעתי בה, טיפלו בו, תמכנו בהם.
- Prepositions can select senses: האמין ל־ “believe” versus האמין ב־ “have faith in.”
- A definite ב־complement is not a direct object and never takes את.
