At twenty, one major difficulty disappears: the round tens have no masculine and feminine partners. But hundreds and thousands introduce a different architecture. Hebrew treats מאה “hundred” as a feminine noun, gives 200 and 2,000 inherited dual forms, and requires special construct numerals before אלפים.
The useful strategy is to learn the system by scale. Tens are invariant; hundreds count a feminine noun; thousands form a construct chain. Mixed numbers then run from the largest unit to the smallest, with ו־ joining the final element.
The invariant tens
| Number | Written | Pointed | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | עשרים | עֶשְׂרִים | esrím |
| 30 | שלושים | שְׁלוֹשִׁים | shloshím |
| 40 | ארבעים | אַרְבָּעִים | arba'ím |
| 50 | חמישים | חֲמִישִּׁים | khamishím |
| 60 | שישים | שִׁישִּׁים | shishím |
| 70 | שבעים | שִׁבְעִים | shiv'ím |
| 80 | שמונים | שְׁמוֹנִים | shmoním |
| 90 | תשעים | תִּשְׁעִים | tish'ím |
The relief is real: these forms are invariant. עשרים בנים and עשרים בנות are equally correct. Historically, the tens are plural formations related to the units — twenty is the “tens” of two — but synchronically a learner can treat each as one fixed word.
בכיתה יש עשרים בנים ועשרים בנות.
bakitá yesh esrím baním ve'esrím banót
The class has twenty boys and twenty girls.
חיכינו שלושים דקות והרכבת לא הגיעה.
khikínu shloshím dakót veharakévet lo higí'a
We waited thirty minutes and the train didn’t arrive.
One hundred, two hundred, then מאות
מאה is feminine. מאתיים is its inherited dual, literally the special “two hundreds” form rather than a phrase made from the independent numeral two. The structure is parallel to other duals, though this page only uses it; the formation itself belongs on the dual.
From 300 through 900, Hebrew counts the feminine plural מאות with the bare numeral row in a construct-like phrase. Three reduces regularly to shlosh; seven and nine have especially opaque reduced readings because the unpointed consonants give no clue.
| Number | Form | Pointed | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | מאה | מֵאָה | me'á |
The consonants in שבע and תשע do not change, so unpointed Hebrew hides the reduction. Before מאות, however, they are shva and tsha, not standalone shéva and tésha. There is no spelling trick that recovers the vowels; the phrase must be learned as a unit.
שבע מאות כרטיסים נמכרו בתוך שעה.
shva me'ót kartisím nimkerú betókh sha'á
Seven hundred tickets sold within an hour.
הספרייה קיבלה תשע מאות ספרים חדשים.

hatikún alá matáyim khamishím veshesh shékel
The repair cost 256 shekels.
Thousands: the construct series
Hebrew has another dual at 2,000: אלפיים. For the ordinary modern number, that is the normal form. שני אלפים also occurs; there is no basis for declaring it prohibited, but אלפיים is the form to reach for first.
From 3,000 through 10,000, the numeral stands in its construct form before אלפים. This is why English “three thousand” cannot be translated word for word with free שלושה.
| Value | Form | Pointed | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|

ba'arkhiyón yesh alpáyim tatslumím she'adáyin lo nisrekú

aséret alafím ratsím yats'ú ladérekh beshésh babóker
Ten thousand runners set off at six in the morning.
Building mixed numbers
Hebrew orders components from large to small. The conjunction ו־ is written solid on the final component: מאה ועשרים “120,” but מאתיים חמישים ושש “256.” When a final unit is present, that unit still agrees with the noun; the invariant tens do not.
| Number | Hebrew structure |
|---|---|
| 120 | מאה ועשרים |
| 256 | מאתיים חמישים ושש |
| 423 boys | ארבע מאות עשרים ושלושה בנים |
| 423 girls | ארבע מאות עשרים ושלוש בנות |
לקורס נרשמו עשרים ושלושה בנים ועשרים ושלוש בנות.
lakúrs nirshemú esrím ushloshá baním ve'esrím veshalósh banót
Twenty-three boys and twenty-three girls registered for the course.
The last example shows the logic but demands careful pronunciation: the masculine unit is ushloshá, the feminine unit veshalósh. Reading long figures fluently rather than assembling their paradigms is the subject of reading big numbers aloud. Whether the noun after a number is singular or plural is handled separately on counted-noun agreement.
Common Mistakes
1. Using the marked masculine numeral before מאות.
❌ שלושה מאות שקל
Incorrect — מאה is feminine, so its plural takes the bare numeral: שלוש מאות שקל.
✅ שילמתי שלוש מאות שקל על הכרטיס.
shilámti shlosh me'ót shékel al hakartís
I paid 300 shekels for the ticket.
2. Reading שבע as its free feminine form before מאות.
❌ שבע מאות
shéva me'ót
Incorrect as a reading — in this construct phrase it is שְׁבַע מאות, shva me'ót.
✅ הדירה נמצאת במרחק שבע מאות מטר מכאן.
hadirá nimtsét bemerkhák shva me'ót méter mikán
The flat is 700 metres from here.
3. Leaving the free numeral before אלפים.
❌ תשעה אלפים מבקרים
Incorrect for 9,000 visitors — אלפים requires the construct numeral: תשעת אלפים מבקרים.
✅ תשעת אלפים איש ביקרו בתערוכה החודש.
tish'át alafím ish bikrú bata'arukhá hakhódesh
Nine thousand people visited the exhibition this month.
4. Forgetting that the final unit still agrees.
❌ עשרים ושלוש בנים
Incorrect — עשרים is invariant, but the final unit agrees with masculine בנים: עשרים ושלושה בנים.
✅ באוטובוס נשארו עשרים ושלושה מושבים פנויים.
ba'ótobus nish'arú esrím ushloshá moshavím pnuyím
Twenty-three seats remain free on the bus.
Key Takeaways
- The tens from 20 to 90 are invariant for gender.
- מאה is feminine; מאתיים is a dual; 300–900 use the bare numeral before מאות.
- Read שְׁלוֹשׁ מאות as shlosh me'ót, שְׁבַע מאות as shva me'ót and תְּשַׁע מאות as tsha me'ót.
- אלפיים is the normal form for 2,000; 3,000–10,000 require construct numerals such as שלושת and עשרת.
- Mixed numbers run large to small, with ו־ attached to the final component.
- In a mixed number, the invariant tens ignore gender but the final unit still agrees.
