11–19 in Both Genders

Hebrew builds every number from 11 to 19 out of two words: a unit plus a special form of “ten.” English does something similar in seventeen, but Hebrew keeps both pieces visible — and marks gender on both of them. That double agreement is the entire system and also the source of its most common hybrids.

The same inverted marking found in 3–10 continues through 19. A masculine unit carries the ־ָה marking, while a feminine unit is bare; then the ten element changes too: masculine עָשָׂר asár, feminine עֶשְׂרֵה esré.

The complete masculine row

Use this row with masculine nouns such as חודש “month,” ספר “book,” מקום “place” and אדם “person.” The two words are normally written separately.

Notice what is happening in חמישה עשר אנשים. אנשים is masculine, so both halves take the masculine forms: חמישה, not חמש, and עשר asár, not עשרה esré. It is misleading to say that the numeral has the “opposite” gender. The agreement is ordinary; only the visible marking is inverted. The underlying logic is developed on gender polarity.

The complete feminine row

Use this row with feminine nouns such as שנה “year,” דקה “minute,” שפה “language” and הודעה “message.” Several members look simpler on the page because the feminine unit is the unmarked base form.

💡
Check the noun once, then keep that gender through both words. Masculine: חמישה + עשר. Feminine: חמש + עשרה. A mixed pair is never a third option.

Why עשרה and שמונה hide so much

Unpointed עשרה represents two different forms. Standing alone as the masculine number 10 it is עֲשָׂרָה asará. As the second element of a feminine teen it is עֶשְׂרֵה esré. The consonants are identical, so only structure and the counted noun reveal the reading.

Unpointed שמונה is similarly shared by the genders. In שמונה עשר חודשים it is masculine שְׁמוֹנָה shmoná; in שמונה עשרה שעות it is feminine שְׁמוֹנֶה shmóne. The second element confirms the choice when the text is unpointed.

הסיור כולל שמונה עשר אתרים בשמונה עשרה שעות.

hasiyúr kolél shmoná asár atarím bishmóne esré sha'ót

The tour covers eighteen sites in eighteen hours. (the same written שמונה, two readings)

This is a genuine reading problem, not a spelling defect. Modern unpointed Hebrew deliberately leaves many vowel distinctions to syntax and context.

Twelve: one yod, not two

Free-standing two is שניים shnáyim or שתיים shtáyim, with two yods in ktiv male. The teen uses the short construct stem and has only one: שנים עשר, שתים עשרה. The loss is visible even though the two words are written separately.

FunctionMasculineFeminine
standing freeשנייםשתיים
before a nounשני ספריםשתי שפות
inside 12שנים עשרשתים עשרה

The default spelling uses a space: שנים עשר. A Hebrew maqaf is possible in typographically tight or fully edited contexts — שנים־עשר — but it is not the everyday default. The general two-form alternation is on שני and שתי.

שנים עשר תלמידים נרשמו, אבל רק שתים עשרה תלמידות הגיעו.

shneim asár talmidím nirshemú, avál rak shteim esré talmidót higí'u

Twelve male students registered, but only twelve female students came.

What people actually stress

The careful citation forms above preserve audible stress on the second element: shteim esré. In ordinary (informal) speech, the two words often behave like one prosodic unit. The main stress moves earlier and the final element weakens: shtém-esre, akhát-esre, khamésh-esre. This is the familiar colloquial mil'el-isation discussed by the Academy under מלעיל ומלרע.

Both pronunciations belong to Israeli Hebrew. The careful final stress is useful for formal reading and for seeing the morphology; the retracted conversational pattern is what learners commonly hear. What is not optional is gender: stress reduction does not license mixing עשר with a feminine unit or עשרה with a masculine one.

ניפגש באחת עשרה ליד התחנה.

nipagésh be'akhát-esre leyád hatakhaná

Let’s meet at eleven by the station. (informal pronunciation; the clock uses the feminine row)

The clock is why many learners encounter the feminine teens first: שעה “hour” is feminine. How hours and minutes interact is a separate system, covered on telling time.

היא בת שמונה עשרה ומתחילה ללמוד באוקטובר.

hi bat shmóne-esre umatkhilá lilmód be'október

She is eighteen and starts studying in October. (informal compound stress)

💡
For recognition, learn both rhythms: careful shteim esré, conversational shtém-esre. For production, gender and spelling matter more than which accepted stress pattern you choose.

Common Mistakes

1. Giving “two” a feminine first half and a masculine second half.

❌ שתים עשר שנים

Incorrect — שנה is feminine, so both pieces must be feminine: שתים עשרה שנים.

✅ שתים עשרה שנים עברו מהר יותר ממה שחשבנו.

shteim esré shaním avrú mahér yotér mimá shekhashávnu

Twelve years passed faster than we expected.

2. Giving a masculine unit the feminine teen ending.

❌ שלושה עשרה אנשים

Incorrect — אנשים is masculine: שלושה עשר אנשים. Both elements must be masculine.

✅ שלושה עשר אנשים ביטלו ברגע האחרון.

shloshá asár anashím bitlú baréga ha'akharón

Thirteen people cancelled at the last minute.

3. Carrying the second yod of free-standing שתיים into the teen.

❌ שתיים עשרה שפות

Incorrect as ktiv male — inside the teen, write the one-yod construct form שתים עשרה.

✅ באתר אפשר לבחור בין שתים עשרה שפות.

ba'atár efshár livkhór bein shteim esré safót

The site lets you choose among twelve languages.

4. Keeping only the unit feminine.

❌ חמש עשר דקות

Incorrect — דקות is feminine, so the second element is עשרה: חמש עשרה דקות.

✅ חיכינו חמש עשרה דקות ואז הזמנו מונית.

khikínu khamésh esré dakót ve'áz hizmánnu monít

We waited fifteen minutes and then ordered a taxi.

Key Takeaways

  • Every teen is unit + ten, and both elements agree with the counted noun.
  • Masculine uses the marked unit and עָשָׂר: חמישה עשר. Feminine uses the bare unit and עֶשְׂרֵה: חמש עשרה.
  • Unpointed עשרה is either masculine 10 עֲשָׂרָה or the feminine teen element עֶשְׂרֵה.
  • Unpointed שמונה hides masculine shmoná and feminine shmóne; the rest of the phrase resolves it.
  • Write שנים עשר / שתים עשרה with one yod in the first word and normally with a space.
  • Careful speech preserves final stress on esré; informal speech often retracts the compound stress: akhát-esre, shtém-esre.

  • Tens, Hundreds and ThousandsA2Build Hebrew round numbers from invariant tens, feminine מאות, dual מאתיים and אלפיים, and the construct numeral forms required before אלפים.
  • Telling the TimeA2Hours use feminine numerals, bare minute counts preserve a surprising masculine pattern, and Hebrew builds ‘past,’ ‘to,’ halves, quarters, and day parts around them.
  • Gender Polarity: שלוש בנות but שלושה בניםA1The numeral does not take the opposite gender of its noun — it agrees perfectly normally, and what is inverted is the MARKING: on 3–19 the ־ָה ending marks the masculine and the bare form is feminine. One and two mark gender the ordinary way, twenty to ninety not at all. The hard part is not the marking; it is knowing the noun's gender.
