Reading Big Numbers Aloud

Knowing the paradigms does not automatically make a long figure readable in real time. This page is about performance: seeing 3,450 on a price tag, 1948 in a history text or a phone number on a screen and producing the Hebrew without rebuilding the grammar from scratch.

The dependable order is large to small. Say the thousands, then the hundreds, then the tens, and join the final element with ו־. Years follow the same arithmetic structure; phone numbers do not — they are sequences of individual digits.

A price: 3,450 ש״ח

The first hurdle is the construct form שלושת אלפים, not free שלושה. The remainder then descends normally, and because 50 is the final component, ו־ attaches to it: וחמישים. With a quantity this high, שקל commonly stays singular; the currency idiom itself belongs on age, money and measure.

המחיר הוא שלושת אלפים ארבע מאות וחמישים שקל.

hamkhír hu shlóshet alafím árba me'ót vakhamishím shékel

The price is 3,450 shekels.

אחרי ההנחה שילמנו שלושת אלפים ומאתיים שקל.

akharéi hahanakhá shilámnu shlóshet alafím umatáyim shékel

After the discount we paid 3,200 shekels.

Years: 1948 and 2026

Hebrew reads a year as one ordinary cardinal number. It never uses the English pair strategy “nineteen forty-eight.” In 1948, the written תשע before מאות is pronounced תְּשַׁע tsha, not standalone tésha. The final eight is feminine because the understood noun שנה “year” is feminine.

מדינת ישראל הוקמה באלף תשע מאות ארבעים ושמונה.

medinát yisra'él hukmá be'élef tsha me'ót arba'ím ushmóne

The State of Israel was established in 1948.

2026 begins with the dual אלפיים, then proceeds to the tens and feminine final unit: אלפיים עשרים ושש.

הדוח מתייחס לשנת אלפיים עשרים ושש.

hadóakh mityakhés lishnát alpáyim esrím veshesh

The report concerns the year 2026.

💡
When reading a year, do not imitate the grouping of the printed digits. Expand its place values exactly as you would for a price: 1948 is 1,000 + 900 + 40 + 8.

A population: 7,300

Population figures expose the forms that readers most often skip over. From 3,000 through 10,000, the numeral before אלפים is construct: שלושת, שבעת, עשרת. The following hundreds then use the feminine row because מאות is feminine.

ביישוב גרים שבעת אלפים ושלוש מאות תושבים.

bayishúv garím shiv'át alafím ushlosh me'ót toshavím

The community has 7,300 residents.

באירוע השתתפו עשרת אלפים מבקרים מכל הארץ.

ba'eirúa hishtatfú aséret alafím mevakerím mikól ha'árets

Ten thousand visitors from around the country took part in the event.

There is no shortcut around these construct forms. Learn the whole chunks shlóshet alafím, shiv'át alafím, aséret alafím. The underlying list is tabulated on tens, hundreds and thousands.

A phone number: one digit at a time

Phone numbers are identifiers, not quantities. Read every digit separately in the bare abstract counting forms — the same forms used when simply counting — and use אפס éfes for zero. Speakers pause in familiar groups of two or three digits, but those pauses do not create tens or hundreds.

מספר הטלפון שלי הוא אפס חמש אפס, אחת שתיים שלוש, ארבע חמש שש שבע.

mispár hatélefon shelí hu éfes khamésh éfes, akhát shtáyim shalósh, árba khamésh shesh shéva

My phone number is 050-123-4567.

תקריאי לי את המספר שוב, ספרה ספרה.

takrí'i li et hamispár shuv, sifrá sifrá

Read me the number again, digit by digit. (to a woman)

Reading 12 inside a phone number as שתים עשרה changes the identifier: it collapses two digits into one quantity. Keep “one, two” as אחת, שתיים.

Millions and billions

מיליון and מיליארד are masculine loan nouns. In exact large numerals they commonly remain singular after a numeral: שני מיליון, שלושה מיליארד. The numeral agrees with the scale noun, not with the final counted noun, so שני מיליון נשים still begins with the masculine שני because מיליון is masculine.

FigureReading
2,000,000 residentsשני מיליון תושבים
2,000,000 womenשני מיליון נשים
3,000,000,000 shekelsשלושה מיליארד שקלים

באזור המטרופוליני גרים יותר משני מיליון תושבים.

ba'ezór hametropolíni garím yotér mishnei milyón toshavím

More than two million residents live in the metropolitan area.

הפרויקט יעלה כמעט שלושה מיליארד שקלים.

haproyékt ya'alé kim'át shloshá milyárd shkalím

The project will cost almost three billion shekels.

💡
At each scale, identify the noun being counted. In שני מיליון נשים, שני agrees with masculine מיליון; נשים does not reach backward across the scale word to change it.

Exact figures versus vague plurals

The scale words also have quantifying plurals: עשרות “tens of, dozens of,” מאות “hundreds of,” and construct אלפי “thousands of.” These no longer specify an exact multiplier. They behave like broad quantity expressions and are common in news and everyday reporting.

מאות אנשים חיכו שעות מחוץ לאולם.

me'ót anashím khikú sha'ót mikhúts la'ulám

Hundreds of people waited for hours outside the hall.

החברה קיבלה אלפי בקשות בתוך יומיים.

hakhevrá kiblá alféi bakashót betókh yomáyim

The company received thousands of applications within two days.

Words such as בערך “approximately” and כ־ “about” add a different kind of approximation and belong on approximating numbers.

Digits inside right-to-left text

European digits retain their left-to-right order inside a Hebrew line. The figure 3,450 must stay in that order; it is the surrounding line, not the digits themselves, that runs right to left. The full bidirectional mechanics are on RTL punctuation.

Single-letter prefixes attach solid to a number written in words, but before digits they take the Hebrew maqaf ־ (U+05BE):

PrefixBefore digitsMeaning
ב־ב־1948in 1948
מ־מ־1967from 1967
ה־ה־12the twelfth / number 12
כ־כ־20about 20

Use neither an ASCII hyphen nor a detached prefix. Compare באלף תשע מאות ארבעים ושמונה when the number is spelled out with ב־1948 when it is written in digits.

הבניין נבנה ב־1967 ושופץ לאחרונה.

habinyán nivná be'élef tsha me'ót shishím veshéva veshupáts la'akharoná

The building was constructed in 1967 and recently renovated.

Common Mistakes

1. Translating “three thousand” with the free numeral.

❌ המחיר הוא שלוש אלף שקל

Incorrect — thousands from three through ten require the construct numeral: שלושת אלפים.

✅ המחשב עולה שלושת אלפים שקל כולל משלוח.

hamakhshev olé shlóshet alafím shékel kolél mishlóakh

The computer costs 3,000 shekels including delivery.

2. Reading a year in English-style pairs.

❌ תשע עשרה ארבעים ושמונה

Incorrect as a reading of 1948 — Hebrew expands the place values: אלף תשע מאות ארבעים ושמונה.

✅ סבתא שלי נולדה באלף תשע מאות ארבעים ושמונה.

sávta shelí noledá be'élef tsha me'ót arba'ím ushmóne

My grandmother was born in 1948.

3. Typing an ASCII hyphen before digits.

❌ ב-1948

Incorrect Hebrew typography — use the Hebrew maqaf U+05BE: ב־1948.

✅ האירוע התרחש ב־1948.

ha'eirúa hitrakhésh be'élef tsha me'ót arba'ím ushmóne

The event took place in 1948.

4. Giving an isolated phone digit the masculine counted form.

❌ אפס חמישה אפס

Incorrect as the opening digits 050 — identifiers use the bare abstract counting form: אפס חמש אפס.

✅ המספר מתחיל באפס חמש אפס.

hamispár matkhíl be'éfes khamésh éfes

The number starts with 050.

Key Takeaways

  • Read quantities from largest place value to smallest; ו־ joins the final component.
  • Drill construct thousands as chunks: שלושת אלפים, שבעת אלפים, עשרת אלפים.
  • Years are ordinary cardinal numbers: 1948 is אלף תשע מאות ארבעים ושמונה, never a pair reading.
  • Phone numbers are identifiers and are read digit by digit with the bare counting forms and אפס.
  • מיליון and מיליארד are masculine scale nouns and commonly remain singular after a numeral.
  • Digits keep left-to-right order inside Hebrew, and a one-letter prefix before digits takes the Hebrew maqaf ־.
