σε in Depth

The small preposition σε covers territory that English divides among in, at, on, and to. Its central idea is a target or point of contact: something is located there, moves there, is transferred to someone, or happens at a point in time. All the uses on this page are neutral, everyday Greek unless marked otherwise.

The map of meanings

UseGreek exampleNatural English
static locationστο γραφείοat / in the office
goal of motionπάω στη θάλασσαI go to the seaside
recipientδίνω κάτι στη ΜαρίαI give Maria something
time pointστις οκτώat eight
distributionτρία άτομα σε κάθε ομάδαthree people per group
movement into / ontoβάζω κάτι στο ψυγείοI put something in the fridge

The noun after σε is accusative. Before a definite article, σε contracts obligatorily: στον, στη(ν), στο, στους, στις, στα. That form-and-case machinery belongs to the basic σε page; here the focus is how the resulting phrase is interpreted.

One form for both location and destination

Greek does not change preposition when a scene changes from rest to motion. The verb supplies that contrast: είμαι / μένω σε describes location, while πάω / έρχομαι / μπαίνω σε describes a goal.

Κάθεται στην καρέκλα δίπλα στο παράθυρο.

káthete stin karékla dhípla sto paráthiro

She's sitting on the chair beside the window.

Πάω στη θάλασσα μετά τη δουλειά, θέλεις να έρθεις;

páo sti thálasa metá ti dhuliá, thélis na érthis;

I'm going to the seaside after work — do you want to come?

💡
English asks whether the place is a surface (on), an enclosure (in), or a point (at). Ordinary Greek often leaves that to shared knowledge. Στο τραπέζι normally means “on the table,” while στο κουτί normally means “in the box.” If the contrast matters, Greek can add πάνω σε “on top of” or μέσα σε “inside.”
💡
Do not assign one English word to σε. Read verb + σε-phrase together: μένω στο σπίτι is location, πάω στο σπίτι is destination, and βάζω το γάλα στο ψυγείο is movement into a container.

Recipients: the endpoint of a transfer

A full noun recipient is another kind of target. With verbs such as δίνω, στέλνω, λέω and δείχνω, neutral Greek normally marks that person with σε + accusative.

The spatial metaphor is still useful: the keys pass into Maria's control just as a traveller passes into a place. This is why a recipient and a destination share one marker.

Έδωσα τα κλειδιά στη Μαρία, γιατί θα ποτίσει τα φυτά.

édhosa ta klidhiá sti María, yatí tha potísi ta fitá

I gave Maria the keys because she's going to water the plants.

An unstressed pronoun uses a genitive clitic instead: της έδωσα τα κλειδιά “I gave her the keys.” The full choice between the two systems is explained on genitive versus σε for indirect objects.

Time points, intervals, and distribution

With clock times and broader periods, σε works much like English at or in. It also locates an event within an interval. With κάθε, a σε-phrase can set the repeated unit over which people or things are distributed; κάθε, not σε alone, supplies the distributive force.

Ραντεβού στις οκτώ έξω από το σινεμά.

randevú stis októ ékso apó to sinemá

Meet me at eight outside the cinema.

Στο μέλλον θέλω να δουλεύω λιγότερο και να ταξιδεύω περισσότερο.

sto mélon thélo na dhulévo lighótero ke na taksidhévo perisótero

In the future I want to work less and travel more.

Σε κάθε ομάδα συμμετέχουν τρία άτομα.

se káthe omádha simetéchun tría átoma

Three people take part in each group.

Σε μία ώρα can mean “in one hour,” counting forward to completion; για μία ώρα means “for one hour,” measuring duration. This contrast is construction-level, not a different meaning of the noun ώρα.

Into, onto, and useful fixed phrases

With placement verbs, σε marks the endpoint regardless of whether English chooses into or onto.

Βάλε το γάλα στο ψυγείο πριν χαλάσει.

vále to ghála sto psiyío prin chalási

Put the milk in the fridge before it goes off.

Two high-frequency expressions deserve to be learned whole. Σε λίγο means “soon / in a little while.” Στα ελληνικά means “in Greek,” especially the language used for a particular utterance or text.

Σε λίγο αρχίζει η ταινία, κλείσε το κινητό σου.

se lígho archízi i tenía, klíse to kinitó su

The film starts soon — turn off your phone.

Μπορείς να μου το γράψεις στα ελληνικά;

borís na mu to ghrápsis sta eliniká;

Can you write it for me in Greek?

Boarding is a goal; transport is a means

Greek distinguishes getting onto a vehicle from travelling by it. Both sentences below are correct, but the preposition changes the relationship.

Ανέβηκα στο λεωφορείο την τελευταία στιγμή.

anévika sto leoforío tin teleftéa stighmí

I got on the bus at the last moment.

Συνήθως πηγαίνω στη δουλειά με το λεωφορείο.

siníthos piyéno sti dhuliá me to leoforío

I usually go to work by bus.

Here στο λεωφορείο is the goal of ανεβαίνω; με το λεωφορείο names the means of transport. This is why translating English on the bus word by word is unreliable.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving σε separate from a definite article. The contraction is obligatory.

❌ Πάμε σε το γραφείο.

Incorrect — σε + το must contract to στο.

✅ Πάμε στο γραφείο.

páme sto ghrafío

Let's go to the office.

2. Putting σε before a place adverb. Words such as εδώ already express location.

❌ Μένω σε εδώ.

Incorrect — εδώ does not take σε.

✅ Μένω εδώ κοντά.

méno edhó kondá

I live nearby.

3. Copying the English double-object pattern with a full name. Greek marks the recipient explicitly.

❌ Έδωσα τα κλειδιά η Μαρία.

Incorrect — a full noun recipient needs σε + accusative.

✅ Έδωσα τα κλειδιά στη Μαρία.

édhosa ta klidhiá sti María

I gave Maria the keys.

Key Takeaways

  • σε presents a place, person, or time as a target or point of contact.
  • The verb distinguishes location from destination; Greek uses σε for both.
  • Context usually resolves English in / at / on / to. Add μέσα σε or πάνω σε only when that spatial contrast matters.
  • Full noun recipients take σε + accusative. A σε + κάθε phrase can set a repeated unit: τρία άτομα σε κάθε ομάδα.
  • Learn σε λίγο and στα ελληνικά as ready-made everyday expressions.
