Greek does not use one basic preposition for static “in” and another for motion “to”: σε + accusative covers both, while από + accusative marks a source. Do not hunt for a separate Greek equivalent of English to: σε versus από explains that decision, while this page focuses on what particular motion verbs require or allow.
Crossing boundaries: μπαίνω and βγαίνω
μπαίνω σε + accusative views a boundary from outside toward the interior. βγαίνω από + accusative views it from the interior toward the outside. The constructions do not require extra equivalents of English into or out of.
Μπήκα στο φαρμακείο για να πάρω παυσίπονα.
bíka sto farmakío ya na páro pafsípona
I went into the pharmacy to get painkillers.
Βγήκα από το φαρμακείο και άρχισε να βρέχει.
vyíka apó to farmakío ke árchise na vréchi
I came out of the pharmacy and it started raining.
The route of entry can itself take από: μπήκα από την πίσω πόρτα means “I entered through the back door.” That does not contradict μπήκα στο κτίριο; the building is the goal, while the door is the path.
Μπήκαμε στο κτίριο από την πίσω είσοδο.
bíkame sto ktírio apó tin píso ísodho
We entered the building through the rear entrance.
Up and down: goal versus starting level
ανεβαίνω and κατεβαίνω encode vertical direction, but they do not force only one preposition. A higher or lower goal takes σε; a point left behind takes από. With vehicles, the conventional pair is often ανεβαίνω σε “get on/in” and κατεβαίνω από “get off.”
Ανεβήκαμε στην κορυφή πριν δύσει ο ήλιος.
anevíkame stin korifí prin dhísi o ílios
We climbed to the summit before sunset.
Κατεβήκαμε από το λεωφορείο στην επόμενη στάση.
katevíkame apó to leoforío stin epómeni stási
We got off the bus at the next stop.
Κατέβηκα στο υπόγειο για να βρω τις βαλίτσες.
katévika sto ipóghio ya na vro tis valítses
I went down to the basement to find the suitcases.
The last example matters: κατεβαίνω does not automatically demand από. The basement is the endpoint, so it takes σε.
Arrival, passage, and departure
φτάνω σε + accusative marks an endpoint. περνάω από + accusative marks a place on a route or a brief stop. φεύγω από + accusative identifies the departure point; a destination after φεύγω is commonly introduced by για.
Φτάσαμε στην Πάτρα λίγο μετά τα μεσάνυχτα.
ftásame stin Pátra lígho metá ta mesánichta
We arrived in Patras shortly after midnight.
Θα περάσω από το κέντρο πριν πάω στο αεροδρόμιο.
tha peráso apó to kéndro prin páo sto aerodhrómio
I'll go through the center before going to the airport.
Φεύγουμε από την Αθήνα αύριο το πρωί για τα Γιάννενα.
févghume apó tin Athína ávrio to proí ya ta Yánena
We're leaving Athens tomorrow morning for Ioannina.
| Use of από | Question answered | Example |
|---|---|---|
| path-through | Which point did the route pass? | Πέρασα από το κέντρο. |
| origin | Where are you from? | Είμαι από την Πάτρα. |
| departure point | Where did you leave? | Έφυγα από το σπίτι. |
English distributes these across through, from, and sometimes via. Greek uses the same source-oriented από, and the verb selects the interpretation.
Είμαι από την Πάτρα, αλλά τώρα μένω στη Θεσσαλονίκη.
íme apó tin Pátra, alá tóra méno sti Thesaloníki
I'm from Patras, but now I live in Thessaloniki.
Έφυγα από το σπίτι χωρίς ομπρέλα και γύρισα μούσκεμα.
éfigha apó to spíti chorís ombréla ke yírisa múskema
I left home without an umbrella and came back soaked.
πλησιάζω: the direct object pattern—and a real alternative
Unlike English approach, Greek πλησιάζω very commonly takes a direct accusative object with no preposition: πλησιάζω το χωριό. This is worth learning because English speakers often insert toward. However, standard Greek also licenses σε + accusative for spatial approach, especially with the sense “come close to”: πλησιάζω στο παράθυρο. They are two grammatical patterns, not a correct and an incorrect one.
Καθώς πλησιάζαμε το χωριό, άρχισε να χιονίζει.
kathós plisiázame to chorió, árchise na chionízi
As we approached the village, it began to snow.
Πλησίασε στο παράθυρο και κοίταξε έξω.
plisíase sto paráthiro ke kítakse ékso
She went up to the window and looked outside.

We got off the bus at Syntagma.

plisiásame to chorió lígho prin nichtósi
We approached the village shortly before nightfall.
Key Takeaways
- σε can express either static location or a destination; the verb supplies the motion.
- Boundary, path, and endpoint verbs favor stable frames: μπαίνω σε, βγαίνω από, φτάνω σε, περνάω από, φεύγω από.
- ανεβαίνω/κατεβαίνω take σε for a goal and από for a source; πλησιάζω allows both a direct object and a σε phrase.
- από covers path-through, origin, and departure point; the verb and context distinguish them.
