Greek expresses “inside,” “next to,” “behind,” and similar relations with a place word followed by σε or από: μέσα σε, δίπλα σε, πίσω από. The last preposition supplies the grammar, so the following noun phrase is accusative; the first word supplies the spatial picture. These combinations are lexical pairings, not a rule that lets you attach either preposition freely to every place word.
The core inventory
| Expression | Meaning | Model with an object |
|---|---|---|
| πάνω σε | on, on top of (contact) | πάνω στο ράφι |
| κάτω από | under, below | κάτω από το τραπέζι |
| μέσα σε | in, inside | μέσα στο σπίτι |
| έξω από | outside | έξω από την τράπεζα |
| μπροστά από | in front of | μπροστά από το σχολείο |
| πίσω από | behind | πίσω από την πόρτα |
| δίπλα σε | next to | δίπλα στη θάλασσα |
| κοντά σε | near | κοντά στο μετρό |
| μακριά από | far from | μακριά από το κέντρο |
| γύρω από | around | γύρω από την πλατεία |
| απέναντι από | opposite, across from | απέναντι από το δημαρχείο |
| ανάμεσα σε | between, among | ανάμεσα στα δύο σπίτια |
All of these are neutral Standard Modern Greek. Some have shorter alternatives in context—στο σπίτι often says all that English “inside the house” needs—but the longer expression makes the geometry explicit.
Some relations admit more than one standard frame: απέναντι σε also occurs, especially for facing a person or taking a stance toward someone. That limited alternation does not make preposition choice freely productive.
Compounds ending in σε
The σε group locates something at or within the place relation: πάνω σε, μέσα σε, δίπλα σε, κοντά σε, ανάμεσα σε. Because σε is the final preposition, it takes an accusative and contracts obligatorily with a definite article: στο, στη(ν), στους, στις, στα.

to farmakío íne anámesa stin trápeza ke sto tachidhromío

Compounds ending in από
The από group presents the landmark as the point from which a relation is measured: κάτω από, έξω από, μπροστά από, πίσω από, μακριά από, γύρω από, απέναντι από. The complement is again accusative, but από does not contract with the article.
Η γάτα κρύβεται κάτω από το κρεβάτι.

Fixed pairings versus productive combinations
The inventory is not produced by a mechanical “[place word] + whichever preposition means what I want” formula. δίπλα σε and μακριά από are fixed selections. However, a few words genuinely combine with both prepositions because the resulting phrases express different geometries.
πάνω σε means contact with a surface; πάνω από means higher than, without requiring contact. μέσα σε locates something inside a container; μέσα από describes a path through its interior. These are real contrasts, not interchangeable variants.
Το βιβλίο είναι πάνω στο τραπέζι, αλλά το φωτιστικό κρέμεται πάνω από το τραπέζι.
to vivlío íne páno sto trapézi, alá to fotistikó krémete páno apó to trapézi

Περάσαμε μέσα από το πάρκο για να φτάσουμε πιο γρήγορα.
perásame mésa apó to párko ya na ftásume pio ghríghora
We went through the park to get there faster.
Similarly, κατέβηκε κάτω στο υπόγειο contains the free directional adverb κάτω plus a goal phrase στο υπόγειο; it does not mean that κάτω σε has become the compound preposition “under.” Meaning and syntactic structure both matter.
When there is no object
Without a following landmark, the first word stands alone as a place adverb—Είναι μέσα “He/She is inside”; this page marks that boundary, while place adverbs develops the objectless system.
Τα παιδιά είναι μέσα και οι μεγάλοι κάθονται έξω.
ta pedhiá íne mésa ke i megháli káthonde ékso
The children are inside and the adults are sitting outside.

Key Takeaways
- The final σε or από governs an accusative complement; only σε contracts with the article.
- Memorize the lexical pairing, especially δίπλα σε, κοντά σε, μακριά από, απέναντι από.
- πάνω σε / πάνω από and μέσα σε / μέσα από are meaningful contrasts, not free variants.
