Ordinal Numbers

Cardinals answer “how many?”; ordinals answer “which one in the sequence?” Greek τρία counts three items, while τρίτος / τρίτη / τρίτο identifies the third one. Unlike most cardinals, every ordinal is an adjective and therefore agrees with its noun in gender, number, and case.

First through twelfth

The everyday core is first through tenth. Eleven and twelve are included because their stems are not predictable merely by attaching an ending to the cardinal.

These are vocabulary items, not a perfectly transparent series. In particular, learn δεύτερος, έβδομος, όγδοος, and ένατος as whole words; trying to derive each one mechanically from δύο, εφτά, οχτώ, εννιά will not produce the standard ordinal.

Η πρώτη μέρα στη νέα δουλειά πέρασε πολύ γρήγορα.

i próti méra sti néa dhuliá pérase polí ghríghora

The first day at the new job went by very quickly.

Ο τρίτος πελάτης ακύρωσε το ραντεβού του.

o trítos pelátis akírose to randevú tu

The third client cancelled his appointment.

Διάβασε πρώτα το δέκατο κεφάλαιο και μετά πάρε με τηλέφωνο.

dhiávase próta to dhékato kefáleo ke metá páre me tiléfono

Read the tenth chapter first and then call me.

The -ος / -η / -ο agreement pattern

The citation form is masculine -ος. Replace it with feminine -η or neuter -ο: πρώτος / πρώτη / πρώτο, δεύτερος / δεύτερη / δεύτερο, δέκατος / δέκατη / δέκατο. The whole adjective then declines for case and number like the regular pattern on adjectives in -ος, -η, -ο.

Το ιατρείο βρίσκεται στον τρίτο όροφο.

to iatrío vrískete ston tríto órofo

The doctor's office is on the third floor.

Κράτησαν τις πρώτες θέσεις για τους ηλικιωμένους.

krátisan tis prótes thésis ya tus ilikioménus

They reserved the first seats for elderly passengers.

Δεν θυμάμαι το όνομα του τέταρτου υποψηφίου.

dhen thimáme to ónoma tu tétartu ipopsifíu

I don't remember the fourth candidate's name.

English changes one to first but then leaves first fixed. Greek makes the ordinal participate in the noun phrase: ο τέταρτος υποψήφιος, του τέταρτου υποψηφίου, τους τέταρτους υποψηφίους.

💡
Treat an ordinal as an adjective, never as a frozen number label. Match the noun's gender first, then match the phrase's case and number.

Larger ordinals

Useful round-number ordinals include εικοστός “twentieth,” τριακοστός “thirtieth,” εκατοστός “hundredth,” and χιλιοστός “thousandth.” They take the same adjective endings.

Φέτος γιορτάζουμε την εικοστή επέτειο του συλλόγου.

fétos yiortázume tin ikostí epétio tu silóghu

This year we're celebrating the association's twentieth anniversary.

From thirteen onward, compound ordinals are normally written as separate words: δέκατος τρίτος, εικοστός πρώτος, εκατοστός δεύτερος. Each ordinal component agrees with the same noun.

Τερμάτισε στην εικοστή πρώτη θέση, λίγο έξω από τον τελικό.

termátise stin ikostí próti thési, lígho ékso apó ton telikó

She finished in twenty-first place, just outside the final.

Order, floors, dates, and fractions

With floors, Greek says ισόγειο for the ground floor; ο πρώτος όροφος is the level above it. With chapters, turns, attempts, and positions, the noun itself chooses the gender: το τρίτο κεφάλαιο, η δεύτερη προσπάθεια, ο πέμπτος γύρος.

💡
In a Greek lift, ισόγειο is ground level and πρώτος όροφος is the floor above it. This matches British usage but is one level higher than American “first floor.”

Στη δεύτερη προσπάθεια κατάφερε να ανοίξει την πόρτα.

sti dhéfteri prospáthia katáfere na aníksi tin pórta

On the second attempt, she managed to open the door.

Dates can use an ordinal, especially πρώτη for the first day of a month and in more careful calendar wording, though everyday Greek very often uses cardinals. The date page explains that choice in context.

Η προθεσμία λήγει την πρώτη Μαΐου.

i prothezmía líyi tin próti Maíu

The deadline expires on the first of May.

Neuter ordinal forms also name fractional parts because an understood μέρος “part” is neuter: ένα τρίτο, δύο τρίτα, τρία τέταρτα. This is why the same τέταρτο appears in clock time for “a quarter.”

Έφαγε μόνο το ένα τρίτο της πίτας και άφησε το υπόλοιπο.

éfaghe móno to éna tríto tis pítas ke áfise to ipólipo

He ate only one third of the pie and left the rest.

Ordinals without an expressed noun

Like other adjectives, an ordinal can stand alone when the missing noun is clear. The definite article then carries useful gender and case information: το δεύτερο can mean “the second one” when the omitted item is neuter, while τη δεύτερη points to a feminine noun.

Δοκίμασα δύο σακάκια και τελικά αγόρασα το δεύτερο.

dhokímasa dhío sakákia ke teliká aghórasa to dhéftero

I tried on two jackets and eventually bought the second one.

An ordinal can also function predicatively after a verb of arrival, finishing, or selection. It still agrees with the person or thing whose rank it describes.

Η Μαρία έφτασε πρώτη και μας κράτησε τραπέζι.

i María éftase próti ke mas krátise trapézi

Maria arrived first and saved us a table.

Ο Νίκος τερμάτισε δεύτερος, μόλις ένα δευτερόλεπτο πίσω.

o Níkos termátise dhéfteros, mólis éna dhefterólepto píso

Nikos finished second, just one second behind.

English uses the same bare word first for every participant. Greek makes the speaker's choice audible: πρώτος for a man, πρώτη for a woman, πρώτο for a neuter noun.

Common Mistakes

❌ Η πρώτος προσπάθεια απέτυχε.

Incorrect—προσπάθεια is feminine, so the ordinal must be πρώτη.

✅ Η πρώτη προσπάθεια απέτυχε.

i próti prospáthia apétiche

The first attempt failed.

❌ Το δέκατος κεφάλαιο λείπει.

Incorrect—κεφάλαιο is neuter, so use δέκατο.

✅ Το δέκατο κεφάλαιο λείπει.

to dhékato kefáleo lípi

The tenth chapter is missing.

❌ Οι δεύτερο ευκαιρίες δεν δίνονται πάντα.

Incorrect—the feminine plural noun requires δεύτερες.

✅ Οι δεύτερες ευκαιρίες δεν δίνονται πάντα.

i dhéfteres efkeríes dhen dhínonde pánda

Second chances aren't always given.

Key Takeaways

  • Ordinals rank; cardinals count.
  • Every ordinal is a fully declining adjective in -ος / -η / -ο.
  • Memorize first through tenth as vocabulary; 11th and 12th are ενδέκατος and δωδέκατος.
  • Larger compound ordinals are separate words, and each component agrees.
  • Neuter ordinals provide the base for fractions: ένα τρίτο, τρία τέταρτα.
