Tens, Hundreds, Thousands

Greek forms larger cardinals by placing the largest unit first and then adding smaller units: είκοσι ένα “twenty-one,” εκατόν πενήντα τρία “one hundred and fifty-three.” The tens are invariable, but the hundreds from 200 and the numeral for exactly 1,000 agree with the counted noun. This mixture of fixed and agreeing pieces is the central pattern.

The tens are fixed

NumberGreekRomanization
20είκοσιíkosi
30τριάνταtriánda
40σαράνταsaránda
50πενήνταpenínda
60εξήνταeksínda
70εβδομήνταevdhomínda
80ογδόνταoghdhónda
90ενενήνταenenínda

These forms never agree. Add a separate unit after them, and write the two words separately. If the last unit is 1, 3, or 4, that unit still agrees with the noun.

Στην τάξη είναι είκοσι ένας μαθητές και είκοσι μία μαθήτριες.

stin táksi íne íkosi énas mathités ke íkosi mía mathítries

There are twenty-one male students and twenty-one female students in the class.

Το κουτί έχει τριάντα τέσσερα μικρά κομμάτια.

to kutí échi triánda tésera mikrá komátia

The box contains thirty-four small pieces.

English inserts and in “one hundred and fifty-three.” The neutral Greek cardinal simply places the components next to one another: εκατόν πενήντα τρία.

Greek writes each place-value component as a separate word above 20: σαράντα δύο, διακόσια σαράντα δύο. Read from the largest value down and do not invent special linking endings. The visible spaces help: each component keeps its own form, and only a component that can decline changes to match the noun.

Η βιβλιοθήκη αγόρασε τετρακόσια σαράντα δύο βιβλία.

i vivliothíki aghórase tetrakósia saránda dhío vivlía

The library bought four hundred and forty-two books.

One hundred: εκατό or εκατόν

Use εκατό when 100 stands alone or directly counts a noun. Within 101–199, use εκατόν before the remaining numeral: εκατόν ένα, εκατόν είκοσι. At a larger scale boundary, χιλιάδες and εκατομμύρια are the counted nouns, so Greek keeps εκατό: εκατό χιλιάδες, εκατό εκατομμύρια.

Το ξενοδοχείο έχει εκατό δωμάτια.

to ksenodhochío échi ekató dhomátia

The hotel has one hundred rooms.

Το μουσείο δέχτηκε εκατόν πενήντα τρεις επισκέπτες σήμερα.

to musío dhéchtike ekatón penínda tris episképtes símera

The museum received one hundred and fifty-three visitors today.

This is not gender or case agreement. Εκατό itself remains invariable: εκατό άντρες, εκατό γυναίκες, εκατό παιδιά. Within 101–199, the alternation signals whether a remainder follows.

💡
For 100–199, ask whether there is a remainder. No: εκατό ευρώ. Yes: εκατόν είκοσι ευρώ. Before a scale noun, however, use εκατό χιλιάδες, not ×εκατόν χιλιάδες.

The hundreds from 200 agree

The dictionary list usually gives their neuter forms, useful for prices and other neuter nouns:

NumberNeuter citation formRomanization
200διακόσιαdhiakósia
300τριακόσιαtriakósia
400τετρακόσιαtetrakósia
500πεντακόσιαpendakósia
600εξακόσιαeksakósia
700επτακόσιαeptakósia
800οκτακόσιαoktakósia
900εννιακόσιαeniakósia

For 700 and 800, everyday εφτακόσια, οχτακόσια coexist with learned επτακόσια, οκτακόσια. Both series are standard and take the same gender and case endings.

Replace neuter with masculine -οι or feminine -ες: διακόσιοι άνθρωποι, διακόσιες σελίδες, διακόσια ευρώ. These numeral adjectives also show case, so masculine accusative is διακόσιους and the genitive is διακοσίων. The detailed paradigms belong to cardinal declension.

Η αίθουσα χωράει διακόσιους ανθρώπους.

i éthusa chorái dhiakósius anthrópus

The hall holds two hundred people.

Το καινούριο τηλέφωνο κοστίζει εξακόσια είκοσι ένα ευρώ.

to kenúrio tiléfono kostízi eksakósia íkosi éna evró

The new phone costs six hundred and twenty-one euros.

In the second sentence, εξακόσια and ένα both match neuter ευρώ; fixed είκοσι does not change. A large compound can therefore contain more than one agreeing element.

The same principle works with feminine and masculine nouns. In διακόσιες είκοσι τρεις σελίδες, both διακόσιες and τρεις agree with feminine σελίδες, while είκοσι stays fixed. Do not make only the final unit agree and leave an agreeing hundred in the neuter citation form.

Το εγχειρίδιο έχει διακόσιες είκοσι τρεις σελίδες.

to enchirídhio échi dhiakósies íkosi tris selídhes

The manual has two hundred and twenty-three pages.

Case applies to every declinable component too. After a verb or preposition requiring accusative, masculine διακόσιοι becomes διακόσιους, but fixed tens remain unchanged. This is ordinary noun-phrase agreement, not a special way of performing arithmetic.

One thousand and multiple thousands

For exactly 1,000 directly modifying a noun, use χίλιοι / χίλιες / χίλια according to gender: χίλιοι άνθρωποι, χίλιες σελίδες, χίλια ευρώ. Like the hundreds, it also declines for case.

Χίλιοι άνθρωποι έμειναν χωρίς ρεύμα μετά την καταιγίδα.

chílii ánthropi éminan chorís réma metá tin kateyídha

A thousand people were left without power after the storm.

From 2,000 upward, Greek normally counts the feminine noun χιλιάδες “thousands”: δύο χιλιάδες, τρεις χιλιάδες, τέσσερις χιλιάδες. The forms τρεις and τέσσερις agree with feminine χιλιάδες, not with the final counted noun.

Για τη συναυλία πουλήθηκαν τρεις χιλιάδες εισιτήρια.

ya ti sinavlía pulíthikan tris chiliádhes isitíria

Three thousand tickets were sold for the concert.

💡
Contrast χίλια εισιτήρια “one thousand tickets” with δύο χιλιάδες εισιτήρια “two thousand tickets.” Do not multiply the adjective χίλια; count the noun χιλιάδες.

Millions are nouns

Το εκατομμύριο is a neuter noun: ένα εκατομμύριο, plural δύο εκατομμύρια. Larger values continue by juxtaposition, just like the smaller compounds.

Η πόλη έχει πάνω από ένα εκατομμύριο κατοίκους.

i póli échi páno apó éna ekatomírio katíkus

The city has more than one million inhabitants.

Το έργο κόστισε δύο εκατομμύρια ευρώ.

to érgho kóstise dhío ekatomíria evró

The project cost two million euros.

We paid two thousand euros for the repair.
