The numbers 1–20 contain the building blocks for larger Greek cardinals. Most are invariable, three have everyday/learned pronunciation doublets, and only 1, 3, and 4—including 13 and 14—change for the gender of the noun. Learn the list first in its neuter citation form, then add the agreement choices.

Θα ήθελα ένα εισιτήριο για τις οχτώ, παρακαλώ.
tha íthela éna isitírio ya tis ochtó, parakaló
I'd like one ticket for eight o'clock, please.
The written accent shows which syllable carries stress. Notice that έντεκα begins with the sound e plus a voiced nd, and πέντε likewise contains nd in standard pronunciation. The spelling remains ντ.
Everyday and learned doublets
Modern Greek has two standard series for 7, 8, and 9. Εφτά, οχτώ, εννιά dominate ordinary (informal) conversation. Επτά, οκτώ, εννέα are learned variants favored in (formal) announcements, careful enumeration, official language, and some speakers' personal usage. The variants express the same numbers; none is archaic or wrong.
Έλα κατά τις εφτά και θα φάμε όλοι μαζί.
éla katá tis eftá ke tha fáme óli mazí
Come around seven and we'll all eat together. (informal)
Η αίτηση πρέπει να κατατεθεί εντός επτά ημερών.
i étisi prépi na katatethí endós eptá imerón
The application must be submitted within seven days. (formal)
Το κατάστημα ανοίγει στις οκτώ ακριβώς.
to katástima aníyi stis októ akrivós
The shop opens at exactly eight. (careful/formal wording)
The same choice continues inside 17–19: δεκαεφτά / δεκαεπτά, δεκαοχτώ / δεκαοκτώ, δεκαεννιά / δεκαεννέα. Keep the register consistent in a formal document, but do not “correct” a native speaker who mixes standard variants in conversation.
Thirteen through nineteen are one word
Greek builds 13–19 with δεκα- plus a unit and writes each result as one word: δεκατρία, δεκατέσσερα, δεκαπέντε. Eleven and twelve are separate inherited forms, έντεκα and δώδεκα, rather than transparent combinations a learner can build from the modern word δέκα.
Το λεωφορείο κάνει δεκαπέντε λεπτά μέχρι το κέντρο.
to leoforío káni dhekapénde leptá méchri to kéndro
The bus takes fifteen minutes to the centre.
Σήμερα κλείνω είκοσι και θα βγούμε το βράδυ.
símera klíno íkosi ke tha vghúme to vrádhi
I turn twenty today, and we're going out tonight.
Gender agreement in 1, 3, 4—and their compounds
The citation list uses neuter ένα, τρία, τέσσερα. With nouns, choose the proper gender form:
| Number | Masculine/feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ένας (m.), μία / μια (f.) | ένα |
| 3 | τρεις | τρία |
| 4 | τέσσερις | τέσσερα |
| 13 | δεκατρείς | δεκατρία |
| 14 | δεκατέσσερις | δεκατέσσερα |
Στο τραπέζι κάθονται δεκατρείς άντρες και δεκατρείς γυναίκες.
sto trapézi káthonde dhekatrís ándres ke dhekatrís yinékes
Thirteen men and thirteen women are sitting at the table.
Η τάξη έχει δεκατρία παιδιά και δεκατέσσερα θρανία.
i táksi échi dhekatría pedhiá ke dhekatésera thranía
The class has thirteen children and fourteen desks.
Μείναμε δεκατέσσερις μέρες στο νησί.
míname dhekatéseris méres sto nisí
We stayed on the island for fourteen days.
Only the final element changes: δεκα- remains fixed. Numbers 2, 5–12, and 15–20 have no gender forms. The case forms ενός, τριών, τεσσάρων and their compounds are developed on one, three, and four.
Counting aloud and counting nouns
The list uses neuter citation forms because Greek normally recites numbers as ένα, δύο, τρία, τέσσερα. Before a noun, however, the noun—not the memorized list—chooses the form. This is why a waiter counting tables may say ένα, δύο, τρία, but a reservation for three people is για τρεις: the understood word ανθρώπους is masculine plural.
Μετράει αργά: ένα, δύο, τρία, τέσσερα.
metrái arghá: éna, dhío, tría, tésera
She counts slowly: one, two, three, four.
Έκλεισα τραπέζι για τρεις στις εννιά.
éklisa trapézi ya tris stis eniá
I booked a table for three at nine.
An omitted noun can still control gender. At a bakery, Θέλω τέσσερις can refer to an understood feminine noun such as τυρόπιτες, while Θέλω τέσσερα can refer to neuter κουλούρια. The listener recovers the noun from the situation, but Greek agreement remains present even when the noun is silent.
Οι τυρόπιτες φαίνονται ωραίες· θα πάρω τέσσερις.
i tirópites fénonde orées; tha páro téseris
The cheese pies look good; I'll take four.
Τα κουλούρια είναι φρέσκα· θα πάρω τέσσερα.
ta kulúria íne fréska; tha páro tésera
The bread rings are fresh; I'll take four.
This hidden-noun logic also explains clock time: στις τρεις and στις τέσσερις use the feminine forms because η ώρα is understood. It is not a special irregularity of the clock.
Common Mistakes
❌ Έχουμε δεκατρία πελάτες σήμερα.
Incorrect—πελάτες is masculine, so thirteen is δεκατρείς.
✅ Έχουμε δεκατρείς πελάτες σήμερα.
échume dhekatrís pelátes símera
We have thirteen customers today.
❌ Το βιβλίο έχει δεκατέσσερις κεφάλαια.
Incorrect—κεφάλαια is neuter, so use δεκατέσσερα.
✅ Το βιβλίο έχει δεκατέσσερα κεφάλαια.
to vivlío échi dhekatésera kefálea
The book has fourteen chapters.
❌ Περιμέναμε δεκα πέντε λεπτά στην ουρά.
Incorrect—cardinals from 13 through 19 are written as one word.
✅ Περιμέναμε δεκαπέντε λεπτά στην ουρά.
periméname dhekapénde leptá stin urá
We waited fifteen minutes in the queue.
❌ Οι είκοσοι μαθητές μπήκαν στην αίθουσα.
Incorrect—είκοσι is invariable and has no agreeing form είκοσοι.
✅ Οι είκοσι μαθητές μπήκαν στην αίθουσα.
i íkosi mathités bíkan stin éthusa
The twenty students entered the room.
