Ymmärtää ("to understand") is a Type 1 verb, and it hides two traps in one small word. First, it has rt ↔ rr consonant gradation: the strong rt of the stem ymmärtä- softens to a double rr in the weak forms (ymmärrän "I understand"). Second, its past tense is irregular by assibilation: the -t- turns into an -s- before the past marker -i-, giving ymmärsin ("I understood"), never *ymmärtin or *ymmärrin. Both features are worth drilling — this is one of the most-used verbs in the language, so the errors are also among the most audible.
Principal parts
| Infinitive | 1sg present | 3sg past | Past participle | Passive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ymmärtää | ymmärrän | ymmärsi | ymmärtänyt | ymmärretään |
Present and past (indicative)
The strong grade rt survives only where the following syllable is open — the 3rd person ymmärtää and ymmärtävät. Everywhere else the closed syllable forces the weak rr. The past is built on an assibilated ymmärs-, which stays constant across all six persons.
| Person | Present | Past (imperfect) |
|---|---|---|
| minä | ymmärrän | ymmärsin |
| sinä | ymmärrät | ymmärsit |
| hän | ymmärtää | ymmärsi |
| me | ymmärrämme | ymmärsimme |
| te | ymmärrätte | ymmärsitte |
| he | ymmärtävät | ymmärsivät |
| negative | en ymmärrä | en ymmärtänyt / emme ymmärtäneet |
Anteeksi, en ymmärrä — voisitko puhua hitaammin?
Sorry, I don't understand — could you speak more slowly?
Nyt ymmärrän, mitä tarkoitat.
Now I understand what you mean.
En ymmärtänyt sanaakaan hänen puheestaan.
I didn't understand a word of his speech.
Perfect and moods
The compound tenses use olla plus the participle ymmärtänyt (plural ymmärtäneet), which keeps the strong rt: olen ymmärtänyt ("I have understood"), olin ymmärtänyt ("I had understood").
| Person | Conditional | Imperative |
|---|---|---|
| minä | ymmärtäisin | — |
| sinä | ymmärtäisit | ymmärrä! |
| hän | ymmärtäisi | ymmärtäköön (formal) |
| me | ymmärtäisimme | ymmärtäkäämme (formal) |
| te | ymmärtäisitte | ymmärtäkää |
| he | ymmärtäisivät | ymmärtäkööt (formal) |
| negative | en ymmärtäisi | älä ymmärrä / älkää ymmärtäkö |
The conditional restores the strong rt (ymmärtäisin), while the singular imperative shows the weak rr: ymmärrä!. The potential ymmärtänee ("may understand", literary) is rare in speech.
Ymmärtäisin sinua paremmin, jos puhuisit suomea.
I'd understand you better if you spoke Finnish.
Ymmärrä nyt, etten voi auttaa kaikessa.
Do understand that I can't help with everything.
Passive
| Form | Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| present | ymmärretään | ei ymmärretä |
| past | ymmärrettiin | ei ymmärretty |
| perfect | on ymmärretty | ei ole ymmärretty |
| conditional | ymmärrettäisiin | ei ymmärrettäisi |
Nykyään ymmärretään, että uni on yhtä tärkeää kuin liikunta.
Nowadays it's understood that sleep is as important as exercise.
Rection: what ymmärtää governs
Ymmärtää takes the partitive for the person or thing understood: ymmärtää jotakuta / jotakin. This is the everyday sense of "getting" or "following" someone — an open, ongoing state of comprehension, which is exactly what the partitive marks. A total (accusative) object appears only when comprehension lands as a single, completed realisation: ymmärsin virheeni ("I understood/realised my mistake"), ymmärsin asian vasta illalla ("I only got the point in the evening"). If in doubt, the partitive is the safe default.
Ymmärrän sinua hyvin, itsekin pelkäsin nuorena samaa.
I understand you well; I too feared the same thing when I was young.
Vasta myöhemmin ymmärsin virheeni.
Only later did I understand (realise) my mistake.
The key idiom is ymmärtää väärin ("to misunderstand"), literally "to understand wrongly."
Taisit ymmärtää minut väärin — en tarkoittanut sitä.
I think you misunderstood me — I didn't mean it that way.

I understand you now.
Key Takeaways
- rt ↔ rr gradation: strong in ymmärtää / ymmärtävät / ymmärtänyt, weak in ymmärrän, ymmärrät, ymmärrämme, ymmärrätte, ymmärrä!.
- Irregular past: the -t- assibilates to -s- → ymmärsin, ymmärsi — the same -si- past as tietää, kääntää, kiertää.
- Passive doubles the t in every form but the present: ymmärretään but ymmärrettiin, ymmärretty.
- Rection: partitive for the person understood (ymmärrän sinua); idiom ymmärtää väärin.
