Benefactive Voice: Questions

Within the guide's broader benefactive/instrumental voice domain, a beneficiary-selecting construction makes the person or group for whose benefit an action is performed the pivot. In questions, this matters most when the unknown is a core participant: a neutral question about the beneficiary uses a benefactive form such as ipinagluto or ibinili, whereas a question about the actor or theme normally selects another voice. Filipino therefore changes more than word order when English changes who or what.

The Question Map

The pattern reflects a pivot-only restriction on neutral extraction: the core participant requested by a fronted question phrase is normally the participant selected by the verb's voice.

Yes-No Questions Preserve the Beneficiary Pivot

Add ba in the early enclitic cluster. The actor remains in the ng series, the provided item remains ng-marked, and the beneficiary remains the ang-series pivot.

Did you cook breakfast for Grandmother before she left?

The actor pronoun mo naturally precedes ba. Ng almusal is the prepared theme, and si Lola is the personal beneficiary pivot.

Will we buy raincoats for the children before the rainy season begins?

Inclusive natin includes the addressee among the buyers. Contemplated ibibili presents the purchase as projected; it does not agree with person or encode an English future tense by itself.

Didn't Carlo prepare ginger tea for the guest who was coughing?

Hindi ba signals that the speaker expected the preparation to have occurred. Polarity does not change the marker frame.

πŸ’‘
In a yes-no question, keep the original voice alignment and place ba with the early enclitics: Ipinagluto mo ba…?, not after the final noun phrase.

Asking Who Benefited

When sino requests the beneficiary, the benefactive verb leaves a pivot gap corresponding to the answer.

Who did Cora cook porridge for this morning?

The answer can be Si Mang Pilo. Inside the presupposed clause, ni Cora is the actor and ng lugaw the theme.

Which group will you prepare a snack for later this afternoon?

Aling pangkat asks the listener to choose a beneficiary from an understood set. The contemplated form ipaghahanda keeps that group as pivot.

Personal sino does not take si in the question phrase. The construction already contains ang before the clause: Sino ang ipinagluto…?, not Si sino…?

Change Voice When the Unknown Role Changes

Compare three questions about one cooking event:

Sino ang nagluto ng lugaw para kay Mang Pilo?

Who cooked porridge for Mang Pilo? (actor questioned; actor voice)

Sino ang ipinagluto ni Cora ng lugaw?

Who did Cora cook porridge for? (beneficiary questioned; benefactive voice)

What did Cora cook for Mang Pilo? (theme questioned; patient voice)

The event can be identical, but the missing role differs. Actor voice selects the cook, benefactive voice selects the person benefiting, and patient voice selects the food. English keeps cook active in all three; Filipino reorganizes the event around the requested participant.

πŸ’‘
First identify the unknown role, then choose the voice: actor β†’ actor voice, thing made or bought β†’ patient voice, intended beneficiary β†’ benefactive voice.

An in-situ question such as Ipinagluto ni Cora ng ano si Mang Pilo? can occur as an (informal) echo question when someone did not hear the item. It is not the neutral pattern for an ordinary information question; use Ano ang niluto…? for that purpose.

Adjunct Questions Can Leave Benefactive Voice Intact

A question about time, reason, or place does not replace the beneficiary, so benefactive alignment can remain.

When will Nestor buy his father new eyeglasses?

Why did Leni have an additional uniform sewn for the new employee?

Where did the volunteers prepare food for the evacuees?

In each sentence, the beneficiary remains the ang-series pivot. Kailan, bakit, and saan request circumstances surrounding the event.

Beneficiary Is Not Automatically Recipient

English for whom can ask either who benefits or who receives an item. Filipino lexical framing distinguishes them.

Sino ang ibinili mo ng gamot?

Who did you buy medicine for? (beneficiary pivot)

Kanino mo ibinigay ang gamot?

To whom did you give the medicine? (recipient questioned; medicine remains the conveyed pivot)

The first asks whose benefit motivated the purchase. The second asks the endpoint of a transfer. Do not force every English indirect object into benefactive voice.

A Short Exchange

β€”Sino ang ipagtitira natin ng hapunan? β€”Si Lando. Gabi na siyang makakauwi mula sa trabaho.

β€”Who will we save dinner for? β€”Lando. He won't be able to get home from work until late.

The contemplated benefactive ipagtitira selects the intended beneficiary. The inclusive actor natin includes both speakers, and the answer uses personal pivot marker si.

Common Mistakes

Asking for the beneficiary with actor voice

❌ Sino ang naghanda ni Leni ng almusal?

Incorrect for 'Who did Leni prepare breakfast for?' β€” actor-voice naghanda would make sino the preparer, and ni Leni is incompatible with that reading.

βœ… Sino ang ipinaghanda ni Leni ng almusal?

Who did Leni prepare breakfast for?

Keeping benefactive voice when asking for the theme

Incorrect as a neutral theme question β€” benefactive ibinili does not select the purchased item as pivot.

What did Nestor buy for his father?

Marking the actor as pivot

❌ Sino ang ipinagtimpla si Carlo ng salabat?

Incorrect β€” Carlo is the actor of a benefactive clause and needs ni.

βœ… Sino ang ipinagtimpla ni Carlo ng salabat?

Who did Carlo prepare ginger tea for?

Putting ba at the end as an English-style tag

❌ Ibinili mo ng kapote ang bata ba?

Nonstandard neutral placement β€” ba belongs in the early enclitic cluster.

βœ… Ibinili mo ba ng kapote ang bata?

Did you buy the child a raincoat?

Key Takeaways

  • Benefactive yes-no questions preserve an ang-series beneficiary, an ng-series actor, and an ng-marked theme.
  • A neutral question about a core participant normally selects that participant as pivot.
  • Change to actor voice for β€œwho did it?” and patient voice for β€œwhat was made or bought?”
  • Time, reason, and place questions can leave benefactive alignment intact.
  • Voice reorganizes how the event is questioned and tracked; it is not an optional English passive. See question words and voice choice for the larger extraction pattern.
