Benefactive pivots are often people already known in the conversation: a child, patient, guest, neighbor, or work group whose needs matter. That strong tendency makes ang/si phrases look definite in translation, but pivot marking is not an article system. A beneficiary can be newly introduced, quantified, generic, or pronominal, while a fully identified beneficiary can remain inside para sa when another voice better fits the discourse.
Pivot status and identifiability are different dimensions
Benefactive voice answers “Which participant is selected as beneficiary pivot?” Other words and context answer “Can the listener identify that participant?”
| Beneficiary reference | Typical expression | What makes it referential |
|---|---|---|
| named individual | si Tiya Nena | personal name/title |
| known group | ang pamilyang iyon | demonstrative iyon |
| newly individuated person | ang isang bagong iskolar | numeral/individuator isang |
| universal or generic set | ang bawat pamilyang lumikas | quantifier and description |
| discourse-accessible pronoun | siya/sila/ako/kami | prior context and pronoun features |
The wider system is explained in definiteness without articles.
Ipinagluto ni Sari ng hapunan ang pamilyang iyon matapos ang mahabang biyahe.
Sari cooked dinner for that family after their long trip. (identified beneficiary pivot)
Iyon explicitly identifies the family. Ang marks the entire phrase as beneficiary pivot; it is not the only source of definiteness.
Ipinagtahi ni Minda ng uniporme ang isang bagong iskolar na wala pang kasuotan.
Minda sewed a uniform for one new scholar who did not yet have one. (newly introduced beneficiary pivot)
Ang isang bagong iskolar introduces an individuated beneficiary. Its pivot status does not require previous mention.
Generic and universally quantified beneficiaries
An ang-marked beneficiary can range over a class rather than identify one previously mentioned group.
Ipinagluluto ng mga boluntaryo ng lugaw ang bawat pamilyang dumarating nang gutom.
The volunteers cook porridge for every family that arrives hungry. (universal beneficiary set)
Incompleted ipinagluluto supports a repeated activity. Bawat distributes it across all qualifying families; there is no claim that one unique family was already known.
Ipinagtitimpla ng tagapag-alaga ng mainit na inumin ang sinumang giniginaw sa gabi.
The caregiver prepares a hot drink for anyone who gets cold at night. (free-choice beneficiary)
Ang sinumang... describes any qualifying beneficiary. The verb's benefactive frame still selects that open class as pivot.
Specificity of the theme does not displace the beneficiary
The provided item can be highly specific while remaining ng-marked.
Ibinili ni Mara ng gamot na inireseta kahapon ang kaniyang ama.
Mara bought her father the medicine prescribed yesterday. (specific non-pivot theme)
The relative clause identifies the medicine. Benefactive ibinili nevertheless selects ang kaniyang ama, while the medicine stays in ng gamot.... Changing it to ang gamot would require a different voice, such as patient voice with para sa kaniyang ama.
Likewise, a beneficiary's possessive modifier can identify the person without changing the frame.
Ipinaghanda namin ng baon ang dalawang anak ng bagong guro.
We prepared packed food for the new teacher's two children.
The possessor ng bagong guro helps identify the children. Exclusive actor namin excludes the addressee; ang dalawang anak... remains beneficiary pivot.
A controlled comparison with actor voice
Consider a situation in which three new employees are already known to both speakers:
Naghanda si Cora ng almusal para sa tatlong bagong kawani.
Cora prepared breakfast for the three new employees. (actor voice)
Ipinaghanda ni Cora ng almusal ang tatlong bagong kawani.
Cora prepared breakfast for the three new employees. (benefactive voice)
The beneficiary is equally identifiable in both. Actor voice selects si Cora and puts the employees in para sa. Benefactive voice selects ang tatlong bagong kawani, changes Cora to ni Cora, and leaves breakfast under ng. Voice changes the reference-tracking center, not the factual identity of the participants.
Both clauses normally translate as active English. Treating the second as an optional English passive would miss why the employees become available as the grammatical pivot for subsequent reference, questioning, and relativization.
Building a beneficiary reference chain
Once a beneficiary has been introduced, an ang-form pronoun can maintain it across later benefactive clauses.
May bagong pamilyang dumating sa sentro kahapon. Ipinagluto sila ni Sela ng hapunan, at ibinili rin niya sila ng mga kumot.
A new family arrived at the center yesterday. Sela cooked dinner for them and also bought them blankets.
The existential first sentence introduces the family without an article marker after may. In the next sentence, plural sila treats the family collectively as beneficiary pivot. Ni Sela/niya are actor forms, while ng hapunan and ng mga kumot are provided themes.
This continuity does not require benefactive voice forever. A following sentence about Sela's workload could switch to actor voice; one about the blankets could select them through patient voice. Voice choice is a discourse resource, not agreement with the previous sentence.
Beneficiary, intended beneficiary, and actual outcome
The pivot marks the participant construed as beneficiary, not proof that the action succeeded or helped.
Hindi ipinagluto ni Dina ng tanghalian ang mga bisita dahil napaaga ang kanilang alis.
Dina did not cook lunch for the guests because they left earlier than expected.
The guests remain intended beneficiary pivots even though the cooking did not happen.
A question can ask which person occupied that intended role:
Sino ang ibibili ninyo ng aklat na ito?
Who will you buy this book for?
Sino requests the personal beneficiary pivot. Ninyo can address several buyers or one respected buyer; ng aklat na ito is a specific but non-pivot theme.
Not every recipient is a beneficiary. A person receiving a summons or warning is an endpoint of transfer without necessarily benefiting. In such contexts, a conveyance or recipient construction is more accurate than forcing a benefactive reading.
Variation and lexical familiarity
Some benefactive forms are much more familiar than others, and speakers differ in how readily they use less common derivations. Actor voice plus para sa is neutral contemporary Filipino and can be clearer in (formal) public communication. The distinction is not “advanced correct form” versus “beginner substitute”; it is a choice between a lexicalized benefactive frame and an explicit beneficiary phrase.
A short exchange
A: Para kanino ang dalawang mangkok? B: Ipinaghanda namin ng sopas ang mag-inang nasa silid pito.
A: Who are the two bowls for? B: We prepared soup for the mother and child in room seven.
The question uses para kanino without committing to a voice construction. The answer chooses benefactive voice and identifies ang mag-ina as the beneficiary pivot.
Common Mistakes
Leaving a known beneficiary in para sa under a benefactive verb
❌ Ipinagluto ni Sari ng hapunan para sa pamilyang iyon.
Incomplete as a benefactive clause — para sa does not fill the verb's selected pivot role.
✅ Ipinagluto ni Sari ng hapunan ang pamilyang iyon.
Sari cooked dinner for that family. (beneficiary pivot)
Promoting a specific theme instead of the beneficiary
❌ Ibinili ni Mara ang gamot na inireseta si Tatay.
Incorrect — benefactive ibinili selects Tatay, while the medicine must remain ng-marked.
✅ Ibinili ni Mara ng gamot na inireseta si Tatay.
Mara bought Father the prescribed medicine.
Using a sa-form pronoun for the selected beneficiary
❌ Ipinaghanda niya ng almusal para sa kanila bago bumiyahe.
Incomplete for the intended benefactive alignment — para sa kanila is oblique, not the selected pivot.
✅ Ipinaghanda niya sila ng almusal bago bumiyahe.
He or she prepared breakfast for them before traveling.
Assuming ang guarantees one known individual
❌ Ipinagluto ng mga boluntaryo ng lugaw ang isang pamilya lamang kahit maraming dumating.
Wrong for the intended general distribution — ang isang pamilya limits the beneficiary to one family.
✅ Ipinagluto ng mga boluntaryo ng lugaw ang bawat pamilyang dumating.
The volunteers cooked porridge for every family that arrived.
Key Takeaways
- Benefactive pivots are often identifiable, but ang/si marks grammatical role rather than English definiteness.
- Newly introduced, quantified, universal, and pronominal beneficiaries can all be pivots.
- A specific provided theme remains ng-marked when the beneficiary is selected.
- Actor voice plus para sa can keep an equally known beneficiary outside pivot status.
- Voice supports reference tracking but does not guarantee that an intended benefit was realized.
