Filipino creates vocabulary not only by borrowing but also by extending native roots into new technical and social contexts. Bahagi “share/part” supports ibahagi for sharing a document or announcement; ugnay “connection” supports iugnay for linking records; hayag “public/manifest” supports ihayag for publishing an announcement on an organization's page. These are productive semantic extensions built through existing Filipino voice and aspect patterns.
Productivity is not permission to invent any root-affix combination. A successful neologism must be interpretable, morphologically well formed, useful in its register, and accepted through actual use. This page focuses on native-root extensions suitable for neutral or (formal/technical) Filipino, not on English-root code-switching.
The boundary between a reusable pattern and a stored word is developed further in productive versus lexicalized affixes.
Productive Families in Modern Contexts
| Root | Established derived forms | Modern extension | Register note |
|---|---|---|---|
| bahagi | magbahagi, ibahagi | share information or a digital document | neutral; common in institutional interfaces |
| ugnay | mag-ugnay, iugnay | link accounts, records, or concepts | neutral to formal/technical |
| hayag | maghayag, ihayag | announce or publish information through an electronic page | neutral to formal |
| tala | magtala, itala | record data in a register or system | formal/technical |
| imbak | mag-imbak, iimbak | store supplies, files, or information | formal/technical for digital data |
| pindot | pindutin | press or select a control in an interface | neutral instructions |
The roots remain Filipino and take ordinary Filipino morphology. Native vowel-initial roots preserve the standard affix boundary where required: mag-ugnay, mag-imbak. Forms beginning with vowel-final i-, such as iugnay and iimbak, are written solidly in their established spelling.
Ibahagi mo sa pangkat ang binagong talaan bago ang pagpupulong.
Share the revised list with the group before the meeting.
Iuugnay ng tagapangasiwa ang lumang tala sa bagong numero ng kaso.
The administrator will link the old record to the new case number.
The first selects the shared item ang binagong talaan. The second selects ang lumang tala as the theme being linked. Modern meaning does not erase Filipino voice alignment.
Aspect Remains Fully Filipino
| Family | Basic | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| share selected content | ibahagi | ibinahagi | ibinabahagi | ibabahagi |
| announce selected information | ihayag | inihayag | inihahayag | ihahayag |
| link selected entity | iugnay | iniugnay | iniuugnay | iuugnay |
| record selected information | itala | itinala | itinatala | itatala |
| press selected control | pindutin | pinindot | pinipindot | pipindutin |
Ibinahagi ni Lani ang ulat sa lahat ng kasapi kahapon.
Lani shared the report with all the members yesterday.
Ibinabahagi ni Lani ang maiikling buod pagkatapos ng bawat sesyon.
Lani shares the short summaries after every session.
The controlled pair changes completed to recurring incompleted aspect. It does not add an English past or present ending to bahagi.
Ihahayag ng kalihim ang bagong patakaran sa opisyal na pahina ng samahan mamayang hapon.
The secretary will announce the new policy on the association's official page this afternoon.
This is a modern electronic extension of making information publicly known. The sentence remains natural because the core action—addressing an announcement to the public—carries over.
Voice Choice Shapes the New Use
Nagbahagi si Minda ng maikling paliwanag sa mga bagong kawani.
Minda shared a brief explanation with the new staff members.
Ibinahagi ni Minda ang maikling paliwanag sa mga bagong kawani.
Minda shared the brief explanation with the new staff members.
Actor-voice nagbahagi selects si Minda and marks the content with ng. Patient-voice ibinahagi selects ang maikling paliwanag and marks Minda with ni. The English translations can be identical; the new technical use still participates in Filipino voice.
Itala natin ang oras ng bawat pagbabago para madaling masuri ang proseso.
Let's record the time of every change so the process can be reviewed easily.
Inclusive natin makes speaker and addressee joint recorders. The information recorded is the selected pivot.
Semantic Extension Must Preserve a Recognizable Bridge
Ihayag extends making information publicly known to publishing an announcement on an electronic page. Iugnay extends physical or conceptual connection to linked records. Iimbak extends keeping supplies to storing information. In each case, speakers can recognize a semantic bridge.
Iiimbak ng aklatan ang kopyang elektroniko sa hiwalay na lagakan.
The library will store the electronic copy in a separate repository.
This (formal/technical) wording suits an institutional document. Everyday bilingual conversation may favor an English-root verb, but that belongs to a labeled code-switched register rather than replacing the native-root option everywhere.
Some proposed terms remain limited to policy documents, classrooms, or particular institutions. A formally coined word is not automatically part of ordinary speech. Conversely, an everyday extension may become conventional without being planned by an academy. Frequency, intelligibility, and register must all be reported honestly.
Questions, Negation, and Connected Use
Hindi pa iniuugnay ng pangkat ang mga ulat na may magkaparehong numero.
The team is not yet linking the reports that have the same number.
Hindi pa leaves the linking expected but unrealized in the current interval. Incompleted iniuugnay marks the process under discussion.
—Itatala ba natin ang mga mungkahing walang lagda? —Oo, pero ilalagay natin sa hiwalay na hanay.
—Will we record the unsigned suggestions? —Yes, but we will put them in a separate column.
The exchange uses inclusive natin consistently. Contemplated itatala and ilalagay describe planned institutional actions.
Lexical Restrictions
Not every native noun becomes a natural verb with mag-, and not every transitive idea can be created by attaching i-. Existing collocations matter. Pindutin ang pindutan is conventional interface language, while a newly invented derivative may be morphologically possible yet opaque or comic. A root is a family of attested constructions; one familiar form does not certify all possible affix stacks.
Before introducing a neologism in public-facing prose, check whether speakers use it, whether a clearer native form exists, and whether the intended readers expect a technical, formal, or conversational register.
Common Mistakes
Using a bare root as a contemplated verb
❌ Bahagi ko ang talaan sa pangkat bukas.
Incorrect for the intended projected patient-voice event — the bare root does not supply voice or aspect.
✅ Ibabahagi ko sa pangkat ang talaan bukas.
I will share the list with the group tomorrow.
Copying English SVO markers into patient voice
❌ Ibinahagi si Nita ng bagong tuntunin sa mga kasapi.
Incorrect alignment — the shared content is the pivot, and Nita requires an ng-form.
✅ Ibinahagi ni Nita ang bagong tuntunin sa mga kasapi.
Nita shared the new rule with the members.
Manufacturing a derivative without established usage
❌ Iulapin mo ang mga tala para hindi mawala.
Unestablished coinage for ‘put the records in cloud storage’ — attaching i- to ulap does not make the technical meaning conventional.
✅ Iimbak mo sa malayuang lagakan ang mga tala para hindi mawala.
Store the records in the remote repository so they are not lost. (formal/technical)
Adding an English completed ending
❌ Inihayag-ed ng tanggapan ang bagong iskedyul.
Incorrect — inihayag already marks completed aspect.
✅ Inihayag ng tanggapan ang bagong iskedyul sa kanilang opisyal na pahina.
The office announced the new schedule on its official page.
Key Takeaways
- Native roots can extend into modern domains through established Filipino affix and voice patterns.
- A useful semantic bridge must connect the older meaning with the new application.
- Aspect, voice, markers, and spelling remain Filipino even in technical contexts.
- Institutional terminology, everyday usage, and bilingual alternatives may occupy different registers.
- Productivity requires community uptake; morphological possibility alone does not create a standard word.
