A lexicalized affixed verb has recognizable morphological pieces, but its conventional meaning or participant frame is stored as part of the word family. Makialam contains material historically related to maki- and alam, yet in contemporary Filipino it commonly means “interfere” or “meddle,” not the neutral sum “participate in knowing.” Ipagpaliban means “postpone”; translating i-, pag-, and liban one by one will not reliably produce that meaning.
Lexicalization is gradual, not all-or-nothing. Some verbs remain partly transparent while acquiring a specialized collocation or evaluation. Their aspect morphology can still be regular even when their dictionary meaning is not compositionally predictable. All unlabelled examples are neutral contemporary Filipino.
This page applies the broader distinction developed in productive versus lexicalized affixes: productive morphology supplies a pattern, but the speech community determines which meanings become conventional words.
Form Is Analyzable, Meaning Is Conventional
| Family | Established meaning | Typical frame | Why literal assembly fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| makialam | interfere; meddle | actor pivot + sa matter | often carries unwanted-involvement evaluation |
| pagbigyan | accommodate, indulge, grant a request | ng-form actor + selected person/request | not simply “give” plus a location |
| mapansin | notice; become noticeable | ng-form experiencer + selected stimulus | perception meaning is conventional |
| matuto | learn | learner pivot + content/complement | the root is not freely used as an independent verb |
| mangyari | happen; occur | event pivot | not ordinary actor voice “do finished work” |
| ipagpaliban | postpone | ng-form actor + selected event | stacked affixes have a conventional whole-word sense |
Huwag kang makialam sa usapan nila kung hindi ka hinihingan ng payo.
Do not interfere in their conversation if they are not asking you for advice.
The negative evaluation belongs to common makialam usage. A neutral wish to participate is better expressed with a construction such as makisali sa usapan, depending on context.
Pinagbigyan ng tagapamahala ang hiling ng mga kawani na baguhin ang iskedyul.
The manager granted the employees' request to change the schedule.
Completed pinagbigyan selects ang hiling. It is patient voice, but its meaning “granted/accommodated” must be learned with the family; -an does not independently mean “grant.”
Regular Aspect Can Surround an Irregular Meaning
| Basic | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated |
|---|---|---|---|
| makialam | nakialam | nakikialam | makikialam |
| pagbigyan | pinagbigyan | pinagbibigyan | pagbibigyan |
| mapansin | napansin | napapansin | mapapansin |
| matuto | natuto | natututo | matututo |
| mangyari | nangyari | nangyayari | mangyayari |
Napansin ni Lino ang manipis na bitak sa ilalim ng tangke.
Lino noticed the thin crack beneath the tank.
Napapansin ni Lino ang bitak tuwing tumatama rito ang liwanag.
Lino notices the crack whenever light strikes it.
The controlled pair changes completed to incompleted aspect. The experiencer remains ni Lino and the selected stimulus remains ang bitak. Morphology is systematic even though English notice does not transparently follow from a universal gloss of ma- plus pansin.
Lexicalized Valency Must Be Learned
Natuto si Aya kay Mang Ben na mag-ayos ng bisikleta.
Aya learned from Mang Ben how to repair bicycles.
Si Aya is the learner pivot. The learned activity appears as a complement with linker na, and the source instructor appears in a kay phrase. English learn somebody cannot be copied into Filipino by treating the teacher as a direct object.
Nangyari ang aksidente habang pauwi ang mga manggagawa.
The accident happened while the workers were on their way home.
The event itself is the pivot. Nangyari is not an actor-voice action performed by the accident; it is an established occurrence predicate.
Ipinagpaliban ng lupon ang botohan dahil kulang ang mga dokumento.
The committee postponed the vote because the documents were incomplete.
Ipagpaliban selects the postponed event as pivot. The construction is common in neutral and (formal) institutional prose. It should not be rebuilt from an English phrasal verb such as put off.
Evaluation and Register Can Lexicalize Too
Marunong makisama si Danilo kahit bago pa lamang siya sa pangkat.
Danilo knows how to get along with people even though he is new to the group.
Makisama can mean join company, maintain smooth relations, or accommodate a group. The associated noun pakikisama may carry culturally specific expectations, but the verb is not mystical or untranslatable. Context decides whether it is approving, neutral, or critical.
Pinagtawanan ng ilang manonood ang tagapagsalita dahil nabulol siya.
Some audience members laughed at the speaker because he stumbled over his words.
Pinagtawanan conventionally means “laughed at/ridiculed” and selects the target ang tagapagsalita. It does not merely mean “laughed in a place.” This lexical family also carries a negative interpersonal effect that plain tumawa lacks.
Makialam is often disapproving, makiramay is respectful sympathy, and pinagtawanan identifies a target of laughter. Register and stance are part of lexical knowledge.A Root Family Can Contain Transparent and Lexicalized Branches
The root bigay appears in transparent transfer verbs such as magbigay “give” and ibigay “give the selected thing,” but pagbigyan has the specialized meaning “accommodate/indulge/grant.” The root tawa supports plain tumawa “laugh,” reciprocal or collective magtawanan, and target-selecting pagtawanan “laugh at.” One citation hides this derivational network.
This also explains why a newly imaginable affixed form is not automatically acceptable. Speakers inherit lexical families with particular meanings and frames; productivity extends patterns only where usage supports them.
Questions, Negation, and Connected Use
—Pagbibigyan ba ng may-ari ang kahilingan nating palawigin ang kontrata? —Hindi pa niya sinasagot ang liham.
—Will the owner grant our request to extend the contract? —The owner has not answered the letter yet.
Contemplated pagbibigyan asks about a future accommodation. The actor is the ng phrase ng may-ari, while the request is selected by ang.
Hindi ko napansin na mali ang petsa hanggang sa maipadala ang paanyaya.
I did not notice that the date was wrong until the invitation had been sent.
The ng-form experiencer ko follows hindi, and the noticed proposition appears as a na clause. Negation does not make napansin an English past-tense form; it denies a completed noticing event.
Common Mistakes
Translating makialam from its visible pieces
❌ Nakialam si Fe sa proyekto, kaya ibig sabihin ay neutral lamang ang pakikilahok niya.
Incorrect inference — nakialam often evaluates Fe's involvement as interference, not neutral participation.
✅ Nakisali si Fe sa proyekto matapos siyang anyayahan ng tagapangasiwa.
Fe joined the project after the manager invited her.
Treating pagbigyan as an ordinary location verb
❌ Pinagbigyan ng superbisor sa kahilingan ang mga kawani.
Incorrect frame — the granted request or accommodated party is selected directly, not introduced by sa in this construction.
✅ Pinagbigyan ng superbisor ang kahilingan ng mga kawani.
The supervisor granted the employees' request.
Inventing a literal English phrasal-verb calque
❌ Inilagay sa labas ng lupon ang pulong hanggang Lunes.
Unnatural literal rendering of ‘put the meeting off’ — Filipino uses the lexicalized verb ipagpaliban.
✅ Ipinagpaliban ng lupon ang pulong hanggang Lunes.
The committee postponed the meeting until Monday.
Adding an English completed ending
❌ Napansin-ed ni Rina ang maling halaga sa resibo.
Incorrect — napansin already carries completed Filipino morphology.
✅ Napansin ni Rina ang maling halaga sa resibo bago siya nagbayad.
Rina noticed the incorrect amount on the receipt before she paid.
Key Takeaways
- A lexicalized verb's established meaning exceeds a word-for-word translation of its affixes and root.
- Aspect can remain morphologically regular even when meaning or valency is conventionalized.
- Store marker frames, evaluations, and register along with the citation form.
- One root may have transparent and lexicalized branches with different voice and participant structures.
- Productivity never licenses every logically imaginable affixed form.
