Verb Reference: tulong

The root tulong covers assistance, usefulness, contribution, and cooperation. Tumulong selects the helper, tulungan selects the person or problem receiving help, magpatulong selects someone seeking assistance, itulong selects a resource contributed as aid, and makatulong selects a person, action, or thing that proves helpful. Reciprocal magtulungan and participatory makipagtulungan organize cooperation in different ways.

English help freely takes a direct object—“help Maria”—and an infinitive—“help Maria carry this.” Filipino does not copy that frame mechanically. Voice determines whether the helper or recipient is the pivot, and several related affixes distinguish contribution, helpful effect, mutual action, and collaboration.

In the -an family, root-final o alternates with u before the suffix: tulong → tulungan, not tulongan. This morphophonemic change continues through tinulungan, tinutulungan, tutulungan.

Tumulong and tulungan: helper versus recipient

Actor-voice tumulong selects the helper with ang/si. A recipient normally follows sa/kay, and a task can be introduced by sa plus a nominalized activity. Locative/recipient-voice tulungan selects the person, group, task, or problem being helped with ang/si; the helper takes an ng-series form.

Nena helped the new residents organize their documents. (completed actor voice; neutral)

Nena helped the new residents organize their documents. (completed recipient voice; neutral)

The event can be the same. The first tracks si Nena, while the second tracks ang mga bagong residente. The alternation si ... sa versus ni ... ang is a voice contrast; sa in the actor-voice sentence is not a disposable equivalent of English to.

The older children help prepare breakfast every Sunday. (habitual incompleted actor voice; neutral)

Sino ang tutulungan mo kapag sabay-sabay silang tumawag?

Whom will you help when they all call at once? (interrogative contemplated recipient voice; neutral)

With a personal pronoun, natural clitic placement is especially important: Tinulungan ko siya, not Tinulungan siya ko. The page on locative voice explains how an -an family can select a recipient or another affected endpoint as pivot even when English uses a direct object.

💡
Use tumulong sa/kay recipient when the helper is pivot; use tulungan ang/si recipient when the person, group, task, or problem receiving help is pivot.

Itulong: select the contributed resource

Itulong presents money, time, labor, goods, or another resource as what is contributed in aid. The contributor takes an ng form; the beneficiary normally follows sa/kay.

The association contributed half of the collected funds to the families whose homes burned down. (completed contributed-resource voice; neutral)

I will contribute two hours of my time on Saturday to cleaning the shore. (contemplated contributed-resource voice; neutral)

This is not simply another translation of “help someone.” Itulong makes the contributed resource the ang pivot. If the discourse instead follows the contributor, tutulong ako sa paglilinis is more natural; if it follows the people assisted, choose tutulungan ko ang mga pamilya.

The potential form maitulong appears in the very common offer May maitutulong ba ako? “Is there anything I can do to help?” It asks whether some useful contribution can be made, without requiring the speaker to name the resource in advance.

—Is there anything I can do to help before the guests arrive? —Yes, please arrange the chairs in the hall. (neutral exchange)

Magpatulong: ask or arrange for assistance

Magpatulong selects the person seeking assistance, not the helper. The requested helper normally follows sa/kay, while the task may follow another sa phrase or a verb complement. Conversational patulong naman is a shortened request; it is common but less explicit than a full magpatulong clause.

Inez asked Carlo to help move the heavy table. (completed help-seeking actor voice; neutral)

💡
Contrast Tumulong si Carlo kay Inez “Carlo helped Inez” with Nagpatulong si Inez kay Carlo “Inez asked Carlo for help.” The magpa- form changes who initiates the request and who serves as actor pivot.

Matulungan and makatulong: successful help versus helpful effect

Matulungan selects the recipient or problem whose help is possible or successfully achieved. Makatulong instead selects the potential helper or helpful cause.

At last, we managed to help the family find temporary accommodation. (completed successful help; neutral)

Matutulungan mo ba akong ilipat ang mahabang bangko?

Can you help me move the long bench? (interrogative potential recipient voice; neutral)

The clear map helped the rescuers a great deal. (completed helpful effect; neutral)

Contemporary Filipino uses both nakakatulong/makakatulong and root-copy nakatutulong/makatutulong. The ka-copy forms are widespread in conversation and ordinary writing; the root-copy forms are frequent in careful and (formal) prose. Neither alternation changes the participant frame.

Early notice is a great help, but it will not help if the time is wrong. (careful/formal root-copy variant)

Mutual help, cooperation, and joining in

Magtulungan presents participants as an internally cooperating group: they help one another or combine effort toward a shared task. Makipagtulungan selects one participant who cooperates with an external counterpart, normally introduced by sa/kay.

The neighbors worked together to remove the mud from the path. (completed reciprocal/collective; neutral)

The clinic is cooperating with the schools on free screenings. (incompleted participatory cooperation; neutral)

Related makitulong means to join other people's work as a helper; nakikitulong lang ako “I'm just pitching in” presents the activity as already organized by others. Plain tumutulong ako merely says “I am helping” and does not encode that joining-in perspective.

💡
Distinguish selected recipient matulungan from helpful cause makatulong, and internal joint effort magtulungan from cooperation with a counterpart makipagtulungan sa.

Noun uses and frequent combinations

Bare tulong is a noun in humingi ng tulong “ask for help,” salamat sa tulong “thanks for the help,” and malaking tulong “a great help.” Filipino often uses a predicate without an overt copula: Malaking tulong ang payo mo literally presents “a great help” as the predicate, not as an adjective placed after English be.

Requests range from direct Tulungan mo ako “Help me” to polite Pakitulungan mo ako “Please help me.” Saklolo is a stronger cry for rescue; it is not interchangeable with ordinary tulong in every context.

Common Mistakes

Copying the English direct-object frame after tumulong

❌ Tumulong si Nena ang mga bagong residente.

Incorrect — tumulong selects Nena as pivot, and the recipients require sa.

✅ Tumulong si Nena sa mga bagong residente.

Nena helped the new residents. (actor voice; neutral)

Keeping the helper as si with tinulungan

❌ Tinulungan si Nena ang mga bagong residente.

Incorrect — tinulungan selects the residents, so the personal-name helper takes ni.

✅ Tinulungan ni Nena ang mga bagong residente.

Nena helped the new residents. (recipient voice; neutral)

Misspelling the suffixed family

❌ Tulongan mo ako sa pagbuhat ng kahon.

Incorrect in standard spelling — root-final o alternates with u before -an.

✅ Tulungan mo ako sa pagbuhat ng kahon.

Help me carry the box. (recipient-voice command; neutral)

Using magtulungan for one-sided assistance

❌ Nagtulungan ang nars sa pasyenteng walang malay.

Incorrect for one nurse helping an unconscious patient — magtulungan requires reciprocal or collective participation.

✅ Tumulong ang nars sa pasyenteng walang malay.

The nurse helped the unconscious patient. (actor voice; neutral)
