Puwede is the everyday modal predicate for permission, practical possibility, suitability, and acceptability. It is one of the most useful words in contemporary Filipino conversation: Puwede ba? can ask whether something is allowed or whether an arrangement will work.
Puwede does not conjugate for person, voice, or aspect. Its network consists of complement frames and combinations such as puwedeng, puwede ba, puwede na, puwede rin, and hindi puwede. The action in its complement supplies voice and aspect.
Core forms and functions
| Form or frame | Typical meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| puwede + ang-form actor + -ng + actor voice | someone is allowed or able in the practical circumstances to act | neutral, conversational |
| puwede + ng-form actor + -ng + patient/undergoer voice | someone may perform an action on a selected patient | neutral, conversational |
| puwedeng + proposition | something is possible | neutral |
| puwede ba | permission request or proposal | neutral, conversational |
| puwede na | ready, sufficient, or acceptable now | informal/neutral |
| hindi puwede | not allowed, impossible, or unacceptable | neutral |
Standard Filipino spelling is puwede. The spelling pwede is extremely common in messages and informal writing (informal), but formal edited prose generally retains puwede. This spelling variation does not signal a different meaning.
Permission and voice
With an actor-voice complement, the permitted actor is normally ang-form. With patient/undergoer voice, the selected patient is ang-marked and the actor is ng-form.
Puwede kang magbukas ng bintana kung naiinitan ka.
You may open a window if you feel hot.
Puwede mong buksan ang bintanang nasa likod.
You may open the window at the back.
The first sentence allows an activity and does not select one particular window. The second points to a particular window. English uses you may open in both, but Filipino reorganizes the markers with the complement's voice.
The common request Puwede ba...? can be softened with po, a reason, or both.
Puwede po ba naming iwan dito ang mga kahon hanggang tanghali?
May we leave the boxes here until noon?
Because iwan has a patient/undergoer frame and ang mga kahon is the selected patient, the actor is exclusive ng-form namin: the speaker's group, not the addressee, will leave them.
Possibility, suitability, and proposals
Puwede need not grant permission. With an inanimate situation, it usually says that something is possible or workable.
Puwedeng bumaha sa kalyeng ito kapag barado ang kanal.
This street can flood when the drain is blocked.
No one is permitting the street to flood. The sentence describes a real-world possibility. Puwede can also evaluate whether a person or thing is suitable sa a purpose or group.
Puwede sa mga bata ang palabas, pero may ilang nakakatakot na bahagi.
The show is suitable for children, but it has a few frightening parts.
In planning, a place or time can appear directly as a proposed option:
Puwede ba sa Sabado, bandang alas-diyes?
Would Saturday, around ten, work?
This is not an incomplete imitation of English. Filipino can use a nonverbal predicate once the proposed meeting or activity is understood from context.
Puwede na, puwede pa, and puwede rin
Particles create highly frequent meanings. Puwede na says that something has become possible, ready, or good enough. It can express acceptance without claiming excellence. Puwede pa says there is still room, time, or possibility. Puwede rin adds an alternative.
Puwede na ang silid; tuyo na ang pintura at maayos na ang ilaw.
The room is ready now; the paint is dry and the light is fixed.
Puwede pa tayong humabol kung aalis tayo ngayon.
We can still make it if we leave now.
Kung sarado ang klinika, puwede rin tayong pumunta sa sentrong pangkalusugan.
If the clinic is closed, we can also go to the health center.
The careful default is rin after vowel-final puwede. Casual usage varies, but learners should master this form first.
Negation and the limits of βcanβ
Hindi puwede can reject permission, feasibility, or acceptability. Context identifies which meaning is intended.
Hindi puwedeng iparada rito ang motorsiklo dahil daanan ito ng ambulansiya.
Motorcycles cannot be parked here because this is an ambulance access route.
Puwede is not the best default for inherent skill or physical capacity. In ability constructions, kaya and maka- distinguish capacity from permission.
Puwede siyang sumali sa paligsahan, pero hindi pa niya kayang lumangoy nang dalawang kilometro.
She may join the competition, but she still cannot swim two kilometers.
The first clause concerns eligibility; the second concerns capacity. This is why memorizing the single gloss can is unreliable.
In a connected exchange, a bare answer is natural:
βPuwede ba kitang tawagan pagkatapos ng hapunan? βPuwede, basta bago mag-alas-nuwebe.
βCan I call you after dinner? βSure, as long as it's before nine.
Aspect belongs to the complement
Puwede itself has no completed, incompleted, or contemplated paradigm. An aspect-marked complement changes the time contour of the possible proposition, not the form of the modal.
Puwedeng natulog na si Ben nang tumawag tayo.
Ben may already have gone to sleep when we called.
Here natulog presents a possible completed event. By contrast, a basic form after a permission modal normally identifies the permitted action without locating it in a completed episode.
Common Mistakes
β Puwede ako umupo malapit sa pinto?
Incorrect in careful standard Filipino β the pronoun needs the linker -ng.
β Puwede akong umupo malapit sa pinto?
May I sit near the door?
β Puwede ko buksan ang sobre?
Incorrect β ng-form ko takes the linker -ng before the patient/undergoer-voice complement.
β Puwede kong buksan ang sobre?
May I open the envelope?
β Puwede akong magbuhat ng limampung kilo.
Misleading if the intended claim is physical ability; this can sound like permission or practical feasibility.
β Kaya kong magbuhat ng limampung kilo.
I can lift fifty kilograms.
β Puwedeng hindi ka pumasok dito.
Wrong for the intended prohibition β this normally presents your not entering as a possibility.
β Hindi ka puwedeng pumasok dito.
You are not allowed to enter here.
Placing hindi inside the complement gives a possible negative proposition. Placing it before the modal denies permission or possibility.
