Verb Reference: hingi

The root hingi describes requesting that someone provide something. English lets “ask” take either a person or a requested thing directly, but Filipino assigns those participants different markers and can select any one of them through voice. The most useful unit is therefore not one translation but a network: humingi/manghingi, hingin, and hingan.

The core family

These forms are (neutral) unless marked otherwise. The aspect columns describe whether the request is bounded, ongoing or repeated, or not yet begun; they do not encode English tense by themselves.

Family and functionBasicCompletedIncompletedContemplatedTypical frame

Source-selecting -an voice: select the person askedhinganhininganhinihinganhihinganng/ni requester + ang/si source + ng thing

The manghingi family often suits solicitation, repeated asking, or asking from place to place. That is a lexical tendency, not an absolute boundary: speakers also use humingi for recurring requests, and manghingi can describe a single projected request. Context decides whether it sounds neutral, persistent, or like begging.

Humingi: the requester is pivot

With humingi, the requester takes an ang/si form. The requested thing takes ng, while a personal source takes kay and a common-noun or institutional source takes sa.

Ada asked reception for an additional blanket. (completed actor voice; neutral)

I will ask Aunt Mercy for advice after work. (contemplated actor voice; neutral)

English can say “ask Aunt Mercy,” with no preposition. Filipino marks the requested content and its source separately: ng payo and kay Tita Mercy. The source is not the direct equivalent of an English object.

The clinic does not ask for payment for the first consultation. (incompleted habitual actor voice; neutral)

Negation does not change the frame: ang klinika remains the actor pivot, and ng bayad remains the requested thing.

Manghingi and distributed solicitation

Manghingi is established, not a freely manufactured alternative to every -um- verb. It is common when someone solicits contributions, repeatedly asks, or seeks something from multiple possible sources.

The association is soliciting old books for the new reading room. (incompleted actor voice; neutral)

Ruben does not want to ask his coworkers for a favor. (basic form after ayaw; neutral)

The first context supports collection from several donors. The second can carry a nuance of imposing on others, but it does not automatically mean “beg.” Learn manghingi as a lexical family, described further in the mang- actor-voice guide.

Hingin: the requested thing is pivot

Patient voice selects a particular requirement, document, amount, answer, or favor. The requester becomes an ng/ni phrase.

Mara asked Nestor for a copy before going home. (actor voice; neutral)

Mara asked Nestor for the signed copy. (patient voice; neutral)

This controlled pair does more than swap word order. Humingi selects Mara and introduces a copy as an ng phrase. Hiningi selects the identifiable signed copy and marks Mara with ni. The source stays kay Nestor in both.

What is the bank asking for before approving the application? (patient-voice question; neutral)

Question word ano occupies the selected requested-thing slot. The bank is an ng actor because hinihingi is patient voice. See patient-voice questions for the general pattern.

💡
Voice changes the whole marker frame, not just the verb.

Hingan: the person asked is pivot

Hingan selects the source—the person, office, or group expected to provide something. The requested item remains an ng phrase.

The teacher asked Tomas for an explanation about the missing project. (source-selecting voice; neutral)

Here si Tomas is pivot because he is the person asked. Ng guro is the requester, and the second ng phrase names the requested explanation. English “ask Tomas for an explanation” does not reveal this alignment.

Do not ask the volunteers for money; their time is contribution enough. (source-selecting prohibition; neutral)

The person or group selected by hingan should be a plausible source. For an inanimate source such as a machine, another verb such as kunin or an institutional interpretation is usually more natural.

Formulaic requests, collocations, and register

Common combinations include humingi ng tulong, humingi ng payo, humingi ng pahintulot, humingi ng paumanhin, and humingi ng paglilinaw. In formal correspondence, humiling “formally request” may suit the register better, but humingi remains standard and respectful when framed appropriately.

Pahingi is a conventional request form (informal):

—Pahingi nga ng tubig. —Sige, kukuha ako sa kusina.

—Could I have some water? —Sure, I'll get some from the kitchen. (informal conversation)

Adding po makes it respectful—Pahingi po ng tubig—but a full request such as Maaari po bang humingi ng tubig? is better in more formal service encounters. Pahingi ako ng tubig occurs in conversation (informal); learners should first master the compact conventional form.

Common Mistakes

Marking the requested thing with ang after actor voice

❌ Humingi si Dado ang pahintulot sa tagapangasiwa.

Incorrect — humingi selects Dado as pivot, so the requested permission takes ng.

✅ Humingi si Dado ng pahintulot sa tagapangasiwa.

Dado asked the supervisor for permission. (actor voice; neutral)

Keeping a si-marked requester with patient voice

❌ Hiningi si Dado ang sertipiko sa registrar.

Incorrect — patient-voice hiningi requires a ni-form requester.

✅ Hiningi ni Dado ang sertipiko sa registrar.

Dado requested the certificate from the registrar. (patient voice; neutral)

Copying English “ask someone” without marking the source

❌ Humingi ako si Rosa ng tulong.

Incorrect — Rosa is the personal source of the requested help, so use kay Rosa.

✅ Humingi ako ng tulong kay Rosa.

I asked Rosa for help. (actor voice; neutral)

Confusing actor contemplated hihingi with patient contemplated hihingin

❌ Hihingi ko ang opisyal na resibo bukas.

Incorrect — with the receipt as pivot and ko as requester, the patient form needs final -n.

✅ Hihingin ko ang opisyal na resibo bukas.

I will ask for the official receipt tomorrow. (contemplated patient voice; neutral)

💡
English “ask” hides three choices: foreground the requester with humingi/manghingi, the requested thing with hingin, or the source with hingan.

Key Takeaways

  • Separate the requested item (ng) from its source (sa/kay) in actor voice.
  • Use hingin for a selected requested item and hingan for a selected person or institution asked.
  • Treat manghingi as an established solicitation family, not a freely interchangeable prefix variant.
  • Match the level of politeness to the situation: pahingi is informal; a full maaari po bang... request is more formal.
