Mula sa and galing sa both mark a source or origin. Mula sa is neutral-careful and especially common in formal writing, announcements, and explicit ranges. Galing sa is extremely common in conversation and often implies coming or originating from somewhere.
English from also marks material, cause, comparison, and separation. Filipino chooses among source relators and more specific constructions rather than using either expression mechanically.
Both expressions refine the broad relation introduced on sa as general relator; the lexical element identifies the complement specifically as a source.
Core source patterns
| Pattern | Typical use | Register |
|---|---|---|
| mula sa + place/thing | source, origin, starting point | neutral-careful/formal |
| galing sa + place/thing | origin or recent movement from | neutral/conversational |
| mula kay / galing kay | source is a singular person | same register contrast |
| mula kina / galing kina | source is a named group | same register contrast |
| mula ... hanggang ... | spatial or temporal range | neutral, common in writing |
| saan galing / mula saan | ask source or origin | conversational / neutral-careful |
The water flowing in the river originates in the mountains.
Lorna was coming from the market when I passed her.
The first states origin in an explanatory style. The second naturally reports recent movement in conversation.
The older source expression buhat sa occurs in elevated or older prose (literary/archaic). It remains recognizable, but contemporary learners should produce mula sa in careful writing and galing sa in ordinary conversation.
This register contrast is a tendency, not a prohibition. Galing sa also appears in neutral writing, while mula sa sounds natural in careful speech when the speaker explicitly contrasts one source with another.
Sources of objects and information
The official notice is from the mayor's office.
The fruit on the table came from Nena.
Personal kay replaces general sa after either relator. Do not say galing sa Nena in careful standard Filipino.
With pronouns, retain the sa-form: mula sa akin βfrom me,β galing sa kanila βfrom them.β
We learned about the change from the company's letter.
Here the source is informational, not a path of motion. Galing sa liham is possible conversationally, but mula sa is especially natural in careful reporting.
Speaker origin and identity
She is from Davao, but she came from Cebu before moving here.
Taga-Davao describes affiliation or home origin; galing sa Cebu describes the preceding point of travel. English from can express both, but Filipino distinguishes them when the contrast matters.
I come from a small town in Quezon.
This is grammatical and more formal or biographical than conversational Galing ako sa isang maliit na bayan sa Quezon. For regional affiliation rather than a journey, a speaker could instead say Taga-Quezon ako.
Ranges with hanggang
Bukas ang tanggapan mula Lunes hanggang Biyernes.
The office is open from Monday through Friday.
Before days and dates, mula may occur without sa in compact ranges. Mula sa Lunes hanggang sa Biyernes is also possible and more explicit. Institutional schedules favor the shorter balanced form.
Naglakad sila mula sa munisipyo hanggang sa lumang tulay.
They walked from the municipal hall as far as the old bridge.
The pair establishes a path with a source and endpoint.
βFromβ is not always source
Material composition normally uses gawa sa, not bare mula sa as a word-for-word default:
Gawa sa kawayan ang mga upuang nasa terasa.
The chairs on the terrace are made of bamboo.
Cause may require dahil sa, comparison kaysa sa, and separation a verb-specific frame. English sick from heat becomes nagkasakit dahil sa init, not automatically mula sa init.
Questions and negation
Saan galing ang putik sa sahig?
Where did the mud on the floor come from?
That message did not come from our office.
The negative denies a source relation. Wala would deny existence or presence, not identify the wrong source.
A short exchange
βWhere did this package come from? βIt is from Uncle Ramon, but it was sent from Bacolod.
The reply distinguishes personal source from shipping origin. Both are βfromβ in English.
Common Mistakes
β Galing sa Marta ang liham.
Incorrect β a singular personal name takes kay.
β Galing kay Marta ang liham.
The letter came from Marta.
β Mula sa init kaya siya nagkasakit.
Awkward English calque for cause; source mula sa is not the idiomatic causal relator here.
β Nagkasakit siya dahil sa matinding init.
She became ill because of the intense heat.
β Mula kahoy ang mesa.
Incorrect for material composition in ordinary Filipino.
β Gawa sa kahoy ang mesa.
The table is made of wood.
β Saan ang galing mo?
Unnatural neutral source question; galing functions as the predicate after saan.
β Saan ka galing?
Where have you come from?
